Hello there everybody. Name's Max because you clearly don't remember my name and uh...just..felt like doing this. My review of Sonic Heroes. Again, this has tons of spoilers so yeah, if you didn't play the game yet to it's fullest, i recommend that you do not read this. You probably can handle not spoiling something to yourself better then i do. Today? Sonic Heroes, that 2004 game that supposedly sonic "Fans" criticized to hell. Well, some of them at least. I think it's a great game, and i'd like to explain why starting in about 2 seconds or never if you are deciding to move on to the next thread. Okay, where do i start? The beginning. Sonic Heroes was a game that SEGA raised huge hypes about, presenting a new unique gimmick based on teamwork. You control three characters in a stage and use all of their abilities to go through at least a 7 minute stage. This is that main thing that people criticize. The speed type (Sonic/Shadow/Amy/Espio) character has of course, the ability to run fast, with a homing attack (How did Amy get that anyway?!), and a swirly little move which speeds enemies into air. The fly type (Tails/Rouge/Cream/Charmy) has the ability to..well, fly. Why the hell am i stating the obvious? The fly type also has the power to shoot the other team members as balls into enemies, to either stun them or destroy them, depending if you leveled up to at least level 2. I'll explain the level up system later. The power type (Knuckles/Omega/Big/Vector) has the power to break through large objects, namely boxes, giant doors and giant rocks or any sort of thing like that, and is also the most combat centered out of all the three types. For an odd reason, i have been using Knuckles lots. Maybe i just like the way he walks. Eitherway, where am i going with this? That gimmick was just..amazing. The concept of team work wasn't really that used before, and Heroes tried to enforce that with others, your chances of success rise. Friends. Also, it was unique. You could switch characters at will with just a swift millisecond push of a key. The characters have tons of moves, however Omochao is there to help out. I know you people say it's annoying but i have 5 buddies who tried out Sonic Heroes, they usually are good at games but they just sucked at this one because it had so many stuff that you could experiment with. That is when Omochao was actually useful, it taught you most of the moves in a tutorial stage. ... You know, doesn't matter, my friends sucked at the game eitherway after the tutorial It's not that i'm saying Omochao is still not useful though. Now that i have recapped the basic gimmick of the game, let's move on with the main stuff. STORY Eggman tries to conquer the world, Shadow forgot who he is and wants to find Eggman to find out, Amy thinks Sonic kidnapped a frog and a chao for no reason and decides to find him, then decides it will be impressive if she defeats Eggman, the chaotix get a mission and need to do various random tasks before doing the main thing. Sounds like an exciting story, eh? It isn't, huh? Well, absolutely wrong! It may look like a plotline of an usual Mario game, but if you collect all the emeralds with at least one team, then complete the game with all four teams, things take it's turn from cheesy to an instant epic and rather dark story. Metal Sonic is in this game. Yeah, no kidding, they have brought him back. And he has betrayed Eggman, and made his own decisions like it is usually with Eggman's robots. They just don't like him anymore. Metal Sonic gathers the data of Team Sonic and Team Dark through the game, with that being hinted during a cutscene. It seems as if the plotline kinda forgot at the end that there was a Metal Sonic appearance buuut... Like mentioned, collect all emeralds with one team, then complete the game with all teams. Then, scroll to the very right and beyond Team Chaotix, the screen will go right to a "Last Story" Hoo boy. With all the collected data, Metal Sonic transforms into a giant monstrosity. The teams will weaken and stall the new formed Metal Sonic while Team Sonic waits for the emeralds to charge up. Sonic, Tails and Knuckles afterwards change into super forms, and fight against Metal Overlord, the giant form of Metal Sonic. He's defeated, story ends. Mind blown yet? My mind has been definitely blown. This battle against Metal Sonic surpasses Sonic CD's. It surpasses the one in Sonic 4 Episode 2, and while the battle against Metal in Sonic Generations was good, the Heroes one shown Metal Sonic being what he's made off. *music drop* ... Oh, want me to mention that one battle against him in Free Riders? Fine...oh, and it definitely surpasses the one from Sonic Free Riders..duh.. (it was horrible) I mean, really, the music, the dialogue from the boss, the atmosphere and the attacks, it all shown that Metal Sonic was not just a little copy of Sonic designed to kill him by racing him. He was something else. He had his own decisions and had taken no shit from Eggman. I wish they could do that someday again =( That's the story. It was simply awesome, and while looking cheesy at first, it turned it's tables at the Last Story. VOICE ACTING It seems that SEGA hires new voice actors just when the old ones get really good at voice acting. Sonic Heroes was the last main game with the classic voice actors, and it made me feel sad. However it shown them being at their finest, definitely. Kind of like the 4kids ones in & The Black Knight. Ryan Johnson...i salute you. Anyway, they really improved since their last appearance in a game. They sounded realistic, and got much more emotion in them. Just..Tails though... Because kids kept growing up and were breaking puberty, SEGA had to keep filing out new ones. The most recent one that was in Sonic Heroes might be one of my most hated Sonic voice actors there is. I mean no offense kid, but you just..i know Tails is an 8 year old, but come on SEGA, you don't need to make him THAT annoying. It was a pain to listen to Tails through the game, he just wasn't very convicing and to me he didn't sound like a true Tails but just a kid reading things off a script in an almost monotone way. I just didn't like him. That's all. Now i can go ahead and make a 8 minute rant about him if you please. The others did a fine job and i enjoyed hearing them, though. WHOOOOA MY HEAD'S SPINNING MUSIC Possibly what i am married to. Music. I just keep mentioning it to people, it's an addiction. So then, what is my opinion towards Heroes' music? It's kind of a 50-50. I like some of them, i hate some of them. What i hate is possibly the rock musics. (Perhaps not Ocean Palace, that was nice and catchy) I mean, well, it's not that i want them to burn in hell..but..they just didn't caught my ear. I liked the techno and more natural sounding music though, namely Lost Jungle, Mystic Mansion (With it's system on changing the music depending what's the situation), Final Fortress, oh and Metal Madness. God, the metal madness A_A The music was okay. Some of it. Just ok. It was ok, but it's not like it was good to me. My opinion, you guys =3 GAMEPLAY The gameplay felt smooth and had a neat variety of things to do, namely leveling up which increases the abilities of a character, the vehicles in Seaside Hill. But it was kind of frustrating when it glitched. The most often bug i had is at Power Plant. There is this loop that also speeds you up, and at the end of it is a spring that rockets you to the next speed-charged platform. However sometimes for no reason i miss the spring and plunge into the bottomless pit. Sometimes i also randomly bounce of the glass and the same results happen: Me plunging into a pit. Oh, and sometimes it is kind of frustrating when i pass those 3 trial things at the very end of the mystic mansion, i reach the goal ring but then accidently fall of the bridge while trying to look cool and homing attack myself into the goal ring. Mystic Mansion's end frustrated me in the first place, really. Oh jeez, and the team battles, those sometimes suck. There was this one time when i was pitted, Team Sonic against Team Dark. I knocked off Rouge and Omega but Shadow was just stubborn and kept staying on land. It took me 8 minutes, still was on land. I even tried to use the team blast on him, he just however on the air for a little second, then came back on land. I quitted the game after that and smashed my laptop, then threw it down the apartment. Not really. Sonic Heroes was a decent game, and has tons of replay value for me. Sometimes it can get a little frustrating, but you know, most games are frustrating, yet heroes posed an interesting challenge. That's all. Boop. The game is not overally that bad but sometimes i encounter some minor fails. |

I Always thought that this game was freak underated, and i really didn't understand why, sure knuckles and tails can run as fast as sonic, but i did like the concept of having teammates,it makes them feel, needed.as far as going through a level that you just need power, speed or flight gets a little boring after a while.and that brings me back to why i think sega should make a sonic heroes 2.i didn't find anything wrong with the game(same with unleashed).and as long as sega comes up with something good then im all for it. I did feel that the team blasts' were a little generic though.and the metal overlord/metal madness boss was a little too easy for my likes.if they made a sonic heroes 2 i'd rather have mighty as the power character in team chaotix and silver as the flight character in team sonic and/or hedgehog. So I Enjoyed sonic heroes, and i replayed it a ton of times. |
