My first post. How would you rank order the sonic zones in each genesis game, from best to worst? Here's mine: Sonic 1 1 - Starlight - Loved this zone, although very easy, especially after Labyrinth... but love the atmosphere, speed, and music. A very relaxing zone. 2 - Green Hill - Best music of the lot. The zone itself is simple and basic, but fun and effective (and classic). 3 - Spring Yard - I don't mind this one, it was fun in places, and was a good introduction of the bumpers. Didn't like the boss though... 4 - Marble - Could get annoying and slow-paced in places, but overall was still an interesting zone with lots of character. 5 - Scrap Brain - Not my favourite. Difficult in places, and a little dull. 6 - Labyrinth - Well the idea was good, but it was executed horribly... Extremely frustrating, slow-paced, and a horrible boss. Good music though. 7 - Final - Nothing against this zone, but only fair I put it last really, as there's not much to it... Sonic 2 1 - Oil Ocean - Absolutely love the idea for this one. Great, unique atmosphere. An original oil rig location, highly memorable. 2 - Mystic Cave - Another stand-out zone for me. Lots of cool ideas in this one. 3 - Emerald Hill - For me, this is the easiest zone of all time. But I rank it high because I can get it done SO fast. 4 - Chemical Plant - A good zone, whilst a walk in the park for me, has some great ideas, and a unique feel. Memorable music. 5 - Sky Chase - Beautiful music. The zone itself is simple, but effective, and a relaxing break from the hideous metropolis... 6 - Aquatic Ruin - The parts out of the water are decent. The parts underwater are not nice. So it's a mix of a zone, but a great one if you stay out of the water! 7 - Hilltop - Boring and not much to it. I have nothing against this zone, but nothing really stands out either. 8 - Casino Night - This one had a good idea, but the bumpers could really annoy me at times, which is why it ranks low. 9 - Wing Fortress - This one is rather frustrating. The whole thing is onerous to get through, and the boss doesn't help either. 10 - Metropolis - Same as wing fortress, but even worse as there's 3 acts! Those crabs are dreadful, as are the exploding stars... 11 - Death Egg - Even though it is a good idea, and introduced silver sonic, I actually really hate this zone. It wouldn't be so bad if you had rings... Sonic 3 1 - Hydro City - A very enjoyable zone. I don't usually like water levels, but this is an exception. Absolutely love the fast parts to it. 2 - Marble Garden - Love this one, and some of the best music too. A little frustrating in places, but other than that, a decent zone. 3 - Ice Cap - Some of the best music. But the zone itself... kind of boring for me. I prefer the bits outside of the cave though. 4 - Angel Island - Again, for me, this one was kind of boring. 5 - Launch Base - Well it was interesting.... but it ranks so low for me because I had so much difficulty with it. It's that damn final boss! 6 - Carnival Night - Nothing special, and annoying too. Sonic And Knuckles 1 - Flying Battery - Was never TOO fond of the Sonic and Knuckles zones, but I'd say this one was the strongest as it was the most fun and interesting. 2 - Sandopolis - VERY slow-paced. But I have to rank it high purely for act 2. The whole ghost thing was, whilst annoying and intimidating, a great touch. 3 - Lava Reef - Preferred act 1 to act 2. Not a great zone, but had some interesting bits. 4 - Mushroom Hill - I dunno, I just find this zone boring... 5 - Sky Sanctuary - Again, for me this zone is boring. The throwbacks were nice but that's about it. 6 - Death Egg - A very interesting zone, but ranks low because of the sheer difficulty of it, and it's ridiculous final boss. 7 - Hidden Palace - Not even like a proper zone really, need I say more? (8 - Doomsday as I'm not sure I ever played that one) I've edited my post by adding reasons for my rankings. Interesting in seeing other people's lists! Edited by Jarvio, Jun 23 2012, 02:12 PM.

Hydrocity Act 2
|
Sonic 1 I never got far enough in it. Loved level 1. HATED level 2. Sonic 2 1 - Emerald Hill - I love easy levels! and I listened to an awesome mix of the bg music on youtube. 2 - Casino Night - i loved the scenery, even though it was a little annoying. 3 - Oil Ocean - i have to admit it was a pretty cool level 4 - Chemical Plant - I hated the water levels, but this one wasn't too bad. I don't really remember the rest of the levels ![]() Sonic 3 1 - Angel Island - It was boring, but it was an awesome intro to the game. I especially like the beginning when you pop out and knuckles hits you and his theme music is playing 2 - Marble Garden - It was fun and there were tons of rings. This level is usally the level I'd get all of the chaos emeralds and be able to change into super sonic 3 - Hydro City - I don't like water zones, and i hated this level when it first came out, but now that i've played it so many times, i can actually enjoy it and the music is kind of catchy 4 - Ice Cap - I loved the beginning with the snow board. It kind of got frustrating but I still enjoyed it 5 - Launch Base - I didn't hate it. 6 - Carnival Night - It wasn't anything like the Casino zone. More than anything, the music reminded me of creepy clowns coming to kill me. Sonic And Knuckles 1 - Mushroom Hill - easy and colorful and green. 2 - Death Egg - I actually liked this zone. 3 - Hidden Palace - It was an awesome looking zone, and fighting knuckles, even though it was easy, was a classic point in video game history. 4 - Doomsday - It was tough but you are super sonic the entire so the only way you can die is running out of rings, or time 5 - Lava reef - This level was amazing. I normally don't like fire, but this level wasn't so bad because i don't think there was very much fire or lava in this level. 6 - Sky sanctuary - I hated it, but it looked so cool. And metal sonic was there. But i died so many times and you couldn't really turn into super sonic without falling off the side of something 7 - Sandopoplis - I just hated the ghosts that stalked me the whole level. 8 - Flying Battery - I hated the plane level. It just rubbed me the wrong way. That said, it wasn't really that annoying compared to plenty of other games. |

Okay, I'm just going to list the zones from Sonic 1 for now, because let's just say that I need to play though the classics again to refresh my memory. Alright then, let's begin. Sonic the Hedgehog 1. Starlight Zone: What can I say about this stage, other than it was just fantastic. There are many things I love about this level, and I'm going to start by praising the music. I found that it fit very well with the whole urban landscape at night theme they had going on with it. It was soft and sweet but at the same time very catchy as well. And the stage itself was very well designed I think. It had all these cool paths you could take, and I found there to be a better balance between speed and platforming that wasn't present in the previous zone, which was Labyrinth. (More on that particular level later...). And I thought the gimmicks were pretty good as well. Yeah, the see-saw could be a little annoying if you weren't careful with that spiked ball, but I otherwise thought that was a pretty good platforming gimmick all the same. And I must admit, I love the backdrop to the stage. That city at night background was simple, but it was also lovely in that simplicity. It added to the mood very well, and I just love it so much. I love the entire stage and definitely consider it to be the best of the Sonic 1 stages. 2. Spring Yard Zone: Okay, this stage. Frustrating at times, but very fun as well. This is the level that pretty much started the Casino cliche that's present in nearly every main Sonic game ever. I absolutely loved the music that played during it. Spring Yard Zone probably has my favorite music in the entirety of Sonic 1. It's one of those things you can bob your head and tap your foot to. It's just...awesome. The design of the stage was also very good as well. Those bumpers were rather enjoyable to bounce around on for a few extra points - well, until you have to get way from them and find yourself stuck at that area. And then of course there are those really annoying enemies that can copy Sonic's Spindash. You all know the robot I'm talking about, and how annoying it can be if you don't defeat it quickly enough. And don't remind me of those spiked balls. Those were just...yeah, between those and those enemies, they make up the most annoying aspects of the level. Other than that, I really do like this level. 3. Green Hill Zone: Here it is; the very first zone Sonic traversed through. Understandably, it's a very nostalgic zone for that reason, and for the fact that it's just a very solid level. It's simple, as one would expect from the first stage of the game to be, but that certainly doesn't detract from the enjoyment that can be had going through it. I think that's why I like it, if I must be honest. It's one of those stages were you don't have to worry about dying much, if at all, where you can basically just relax while you play though it. The music is, of course, very catchy, and rather memorable - seriously, who hasn't heard Green Hill's theme before? So yeah, it's a rather simple stage, but that's what makes it good. Not great, but good and that's what's putting it in my number three spot for Sonic 1 zones. 4. Scrap Brain Zone: To be honest, there really isn't much I can say about this zone, since I never really played it all that much. I do kinda like the design of the level, and the music is pretty good as well, as I've said with all the other zones I've talked about. But with little playthroughs of the stage to go on, I don't think it deserves to be very high on my list right now. 5. Labyrinth Zone: Nothing really special about this stage. It's probably the most boring out of the six zones. I can't even remember what the music sounds like half the time. And as well, it's also really boring and slow-paced like pretty much every other water level that isn't named Hydrocity. 6. Marble Zone: Okay SEGA, I need to ask one question; why is the second zone of your mascot's debut game so...annoying?. I mean, it's just ridiculous how utterly annoying Marble Zone is. It's also ridiculous how much I have died on this dang stage - more than in Labyrinth, Starlight and Scrap Brain Zone combined. That's not something you want to go for in only the second zone of the game. If I may be honest, I found that there were just too many annoying obstacles that it had. Like those Caterkillers for example. One wrong jump and Sonic'll have several holes in his body. And let's not forget all the other things this zone had that were pretty much designed to give you at least a little bit of frustration. Or for me, a lot of it. The music was awesome though, I will admit to that. |

Angel Island Act 1
|
Well to start: Loved Stages- Sonic 1 GreenHill:Very memoriable! Loved it, very much.Easy, very well paced, nice design.XD Starlight:A very big challenge.Hated it in Sonic Genisis(GBA)>:(. The last boss is very fun. Sonic 2 Flying Fortress:This level is so hard! But fun.The glitches are very memorable to me though. :3 Chemical Plant:This level is just too freaking boss! It's very fun and addicting. Sonic 3 Angel Island:Best level in the game in my opinion. Ice Cap:I love the music, and the snowboarding part is too fun. Now time for my Least Favorite List ![]() Sonic 1 Labyrinth zone:This zone takes Sonic and your player to the edge of despair on ,underwater traps,it's like a maze, and the boss is hard if you're not well too quick at a fast pace. Marble Garden Zone:This zone makes me wanna take the cartridge out of the system and smash it into a million peices! The lava pits are just too annoying.Including the dropping spikes, too crazy. Sonic 2 Oil Ocean:Don't get me started on this one! In the beginning of the level, if you make a mistake on the platforms you fall right into the oil and even if you made it to last platform and fall into the oil you still have to run back and try to jump back upand try again.(Unless you have Tails, you can fly back up to end of the platform.) Sonic 3 Carnival Night Zone:The level that is the master of confusion.Nobody knew that they were supposed to move up and down on the cylinder looking things to move on, it's too confusing!GAWL! |
In order for there to be light, one must conquer it and rid it of darkness that tries to overcome it.

The Female Ultimate Life Form!

This actually took longer to post and write than I thought, but here's the first game. I will edit my post with 2 and so on, or perhaps reply with a new one. Sonic 1 1 - Marble Zone I'm surprised thus far how not a lot of people liked this zone. I for one loved this zone, it was my favorite as a kid. It's certainly different from the other zones I think. There's a lot more watching for hazards, pushing things, waiting for platforms/said traps to advance. I think it was rather scary as a kid, which added to the fun. You drop down into a pit and get chased by lava, there's lava falls that sprout up and send your block flying, and then near the end things start to catch on fire. The boss is pretty fun as well, just avoid fireballs and the lava gap. Not to mention I loved the music. 2 - Starlight Zone I think this level has great balance, unlike a certain level before it. It's not too hard, it's not too easy, and there's a lot of different ways to the end it seems like. It's a really nice looking level overall, what with it's future/spacey/city-scape theme going on and the music is just perfect. I enjoy the see-saws, the moving platforms, and the sort. The boss fight at end is equally as fun, allowing one to either sit and aim weapons back at Eggy (or should I say Robotnik) or to launch Sonic himself at the doctor. 3 - Green Hill Zone The good ol' first levels. Of all the ones that stand the test of time, I think Green Hill is still one of best, especially considering it got its own remake in Adventure 2, a remix in Advance 3, and is seen again redone as the first place in Gen. You can't not love GHZ. It's good beginning level that really gets you into the game. There's many paths, some hazards and simple, but still worthy challenges of enemies. Not to mention, you learn very quickly why exploring pays off, granting you goodies in the forms of rings and power-ups. 4 - Spring Yard Zone It's like they want you to hate all the Casino Zones. I don't think there are many Casino/Carnival-themed zones that I liked and Spring Yard is no exception. Although it's probably better than the rest. The lower paths have a couple traps that give me trouble when I gain too much speed, because I fly into them off the ramps. Falling into rotating spike ball pits is murder, and takes a bit to jump out of. There's some tricky maneuvering in certain areas. The boss is alright, but I have sometimes had issues where I fall to my doom after getting stuck on the boss. Not to mention a bug that kills you if you try and rush the moving blocks. The music from here is more of an okay track. 5 - Scrap Brain Zone It was actually a tough decision between Spring Yard and Scrap Brain, but I think Scrap Brain is very close to the 4th spot. I had to refresh my memory of the level slightly to finally put it at 5th. I don't get this far often, for whatever reason (I probably know why). Scrap Brain is a very fun zone overall, with plenty of challenge, as should be expected for a final level. There's tons of hazards, a lot of returning badniks and an epic song that make it a great level. However... the final part of the act tosses you into a mini-labyrinth zone at the end. Which is sort of what kills the level. Remove the nightmare from Act 3 and Scrap Brain is a solid zone. 6 - Labyrinth Zone There's something about those Labyrinths... Of all the water levels, Labyrinth Zone has to be, by far, the most cruelest, unforgiving ones. It's like they don't want you get past this level. It's just a long terrible maze (yeah, it's in the name) that is just a bit boring compared to the rest of the game. The boss is no help either, being the most confusing surprise at the end. You aren't trying to fight Eggman, you're trying to escape the labyrinth. Why bother have him appear in the way he does anyways. You can actually catch up to him and hit him and he takes damage. It would've been better if he perhaps did some evil laugh, the ground shook and he sped off. |

Alright, let's get the next game in the classics out of the way while this topic is still fresh in my mind. Sonic the Hedgehog 2 1. Chemical Plant Zone: The obligatory mention. And what's not to like about this stage? Aside from that pink water - that can be a little annoying, admittedly. I mean, come on, the level is well designed, with a nice balance of speed and platforming, something I liked about Starlight Zone in Sonic 1. Though it does seem that the speed element gets just a little more focus at times, but it's still fairly good. The overall theme of the stage is very nice, what with the whole factory sthick it has going for it. There's just something about a 'chemical plant' that fits so well, especially when you consider who the main villain of the franchise is. And nobody can deny the sheer awesomeness that is the music. 2. Casino Night Zone: Out of all the casino levels in the Sonic franchise, this one is my absolute favorite. First of all, the music is just amazing. It's an infectious tune that I cannot help but bob my head and hum to at times. Oh come on, you all have done it to - don't even try to deny it. Anyway, to get back to the main focus of this topic, not only is the music fantastic, but so is the very design of the stage itself. You can tell that Sonic Team enjoyed creating this particular zone. I especially like the use of the slot machines - they fit so well with the trope of the level, for like the most obvious reason ever - as well as several other elements of the level. 3. Oil Ocean Zone: Another stage with fantastic music. I have to hand it to Sonic Team - Sonic 2 pretty much has my favorite soundtrack out of all the Classic games and as I've basically pointed out just now, Oil Ocean is no exception to that. It fits so well with the zone and I love it for that. And once again, the level design is great. I really liked the idea of an oil-filled ocean and I believe SEGA did a great job on this level. It was a rather creative zone that made Sonic 2 all the more awesome because of it. 4. Mystic Cave Zone: Do you really need me to go through how good the music is? Seriously? Because allow me to just say for the record that I've pretty much just been saying the same thing over and over - Sonic 2 has my favorite soundtrack out of all the classic games. So just remember that and you will be just fine. Anyway, let's discuss the zone itself. I love the whole underground cave aspect of this level and though there are some elements that do bother me, such as those annoying Crawltons that keep popping out at pretty much the worse moments, for the most part I love this level. It's just so awesome. 5. Hilltop Zone: This is an interesting level with the areas that include lava - in a peacefully-looking hilly terrain. It must be the work of Eggman. I mean, just about everything that goes wrong in Sonic's world is the work of Eggman. But it's an interesting combination that strangely works. I don't know how, but it just does. 6: Aquatic Ruin Zone: Meh, this level is actually quite forgettable, if I am to be honest. Maybe I just don't like water stages (at least it's better than Labyrinth Zone, to be fair) 7: Sky Chase: There's nothing bad about Sky Chase, but it's just so boring at times. I mean, you're on top of a slow-moving plane and you jump on any enemies you see. That's it. In my opinion, Sonic Adventure 1 implemented this idea a little better. 8: Wing Fortress Zone: To me, this stage is as forgettable as Aquatic Ruin - just with a higher annoyance factor. And it actually has my least favorite music in the game - ironic with how much I've been praising the soundtrack, is it not? 9: Metropolis Zone: I'm coming right out and saying it - this zone sucks. And I'm not talking normal awfulness, this stage is just horrendous. To me, it's basically the Eggmanland of the Classic era - stupidly difficult. But where Eggmanland was plagued with bottomless pits that sometimes required quick-time events to get past, Metropolis has cheap enemy placement going for it. Very cheap enemy placement - it seemed as if you couldn't run five steps without getting hit by the boomeranging (yes, that is now a word) blades of the Slicers or the claw of a Shellcracker. And do not get me started on those damn Asterons. Just don't. |
