The Black Swordsman
|
In the darkness a loan pair of flaming wings could be seen fluttering down to a balcony in the tall city. A tall burly man seemed to be attached to them. His facial expression almost seemed to be in a scowl. His scruffy beard looked like it hadn't been messed with in well over a week. As he landed the wings retracted and a rather large phoenix materialized next to him. "Sir, I have a bad feeling about this place. Something is highly amiss," came a high pitched voice that seemed to originate from the bird. "I know, Nootua. I feel it too. We should probably proceed with extreme caution," said the burly man. His voice boomed through the room before him. The room was empty save for a computer and pod. "We already know what to do. We've already lost two friends to this place... Ren... Koga... I hope you two are alright," he sighed as he stepped into the pod. Nootua dematerialized and formed wings once more on the man's back. "Arikato I hope you know what you're doing..." came the bird's voice again this time inside of his head. "So do I... So do I..." he spoke just as the liquid in the pod rose above his chin. After it was full he began to feel slightly light-headed. Suddenly a flash of light appeared in a flat-line on the outer edge. It came on again and began to rise and fall as if it was scanning him. A few seconds afterwards all went black. "Create a username, please?" an almost monotone voice rang in his ears. "I take it this is what they both already did," he thought and then began to think of his username. AR1K4T0_G4NB4R4 was what he ultimately decided on. "Username accepted. Welcome to Digital Dive. You are now being logged in. A full-briefing of what lies ahead will be given to you after you enter. Your body will be stored away until the time you have beaten the game. If you can. To win your freedom you must win and if not forever be trapped inside to wander as a lost soul." The voice in his head subsided and his vision cleared revealing a lobby area. There were several doors scattered about. However the only active one was in front of him. Above it the words "Cavern" were written into the frame. He looked at it for several moments before slowly making his way down the tunnel, taking his time and gathering as much visual intel as possible. The hallway seemed to be cracked in places. He couldn't tell if this was natural or if this had happened over time but he got an odd feeling from the cracks. Like they were emitting some kind of wavelength or something. He decided he had better stick to the middle of the hallway just in case. "I don't like this place. It gives me the creeps..." Nootua said as he materialized by Arikato's side. "You and me both, brother... You and me both..." he sighed just as he exited the tunnel. Before him there wasn't much save for two branching paths. One seemed to have a light source coming from it. The other was pitch black the further down you looked. He took a moment to feel the dirt beneath his feet and run his fingers along the walls and gain an understanding of what he was feeling. "It's feels real... What kind of place is this?" he thought. |

Break out the L-word. The other L-word.
|
Bill's hands were tied behind his back; a blindfold draped across his eyes; and he was smiling. It was the smile of a man looking upon some children as they played a game that so amused them; it was the smile of a man whose amusement was found in contempt of others. He was being led somewhere. A few minutes ago, the men who held him had taken him out of their car and they were now walking to their destination. What he found so amusing was that the men seemed to be enjoying themselves quite a bit, as if they were clever enough to capture the notorious William von Awsum. He kept tabs on all supernatural phenomena that happened in this world. After all, this world was the last known location of a certain Mobian by the name of Archaic: an individual whose location Bill would pay generously for, if anyone knew it. But it would seem none did. He was very elusive, Archaic; although, based on the few times Bill had encountered him, he seemed very apathetic to his own status as hunted. So whenever something out of the ordinary happened on this very ordinary world, Bill sprang on it like a starving predator. The latest was of strange disappearances connected to strange locations. Of course, it was all very hush-hush, but he had his ways of finding things in this world. Sometimes from otherwordly sources. He had caught wind of such a strange location in the Serengeti plains of Tanzania. He had contacts here, and they lead him to an organization of some sort that could lead him there, but on one condition: they tie him up and blindfold him, so that he does not know where they take him. It was naive of them to think it would have any effect, Bill knew. He could easily break the ropes, or have coerced them out of it from the beginning. But he allowed them their fun, because it was pathetic, and it amused him. They finally came to a stop in front of a shack of some sort, and judging by the eerie silence, it was far from civilization and local animal life. One of the men opened the door as the other led Bill in. The man threw Bill to the ground, and began to untie his hands. "Watch it," Bill said, his voice muffled because his face was buried in the floor. The man chuckled as he finished untying Bill's hands. Simple knots, he thought. What do they take me for? The two men left just as quickly as they came, leaving Bill lying on the floor, blindfolded but unbound. He pushed up off the ground and got on his feet, and then removed the blindfold. "Brilliant," he muttered, his dress suit covered in dirt and dust, and his bald head dripping with perspiration. He allowed flames to lick his body and evaporate the sweat, and then took a look around the room. It was stark, containing only a computer and a pod. Exactly as the rumours say, he thought, amused by the uncanny credibility of his sources. And if this much is true... He stepped into the pod. It closed shut immediately afterwards, and it began to fill with a strange liquid. After the pod was filled with the liquid, and his vision fogged, a line of light appeared on the edge of the pod and crossed it horizontally, scanning him. Then it scanned him again vertically, and went black. A monotone, robotic voice asked out of nowhere, "Create a username, please?" Bill smiled again, amused by this unnecessary pleasantry. He gave little thought to it, thinking, "kale." "Username accepted. Welcome to Digital Dive. You are now being logged in. A full briefing of what lies ahead of you will be given to you after you enter. Your body will be stored away until the time you have beaten the game. If you can. To win your freedom you must win and and if not forever be trapped inside to wander as a lost soul." The message cut out and immediately after his vision cleared. He was no longer in the pod or in the shack, but only in a lobby sort of room. All around him were doors with signs above them in the door frame. But all of the signs were unlit, and the doors inactive; except for the one right in front of Bill, a door whose sign says "Cavern." Bill shrugged and went through the door, finding himself in a hallway of some sorts. He didn't waste time taking in the scenery, though, and kept moving. But he stopped when he heard voices. It sounded as if someone were talking to someone else, but Bill could only hear one voice: "...me, both, brother... you and me both..." He slowly pulled out his handgun from his jacket and slowly continued down the hall. It soon opened up, revealing a small chamber with two paths: one with light at the end, and one with darkness. In the chamber, there was a man, undoubtedly the source of the voice Bill heard earlier, examining the walls. There was also a flaming bird hovering nearby, but it seemed it was distracted by looking down one of the paths. Bill quickly returned to whence he came, trying to decide how to deal with this unknown man. Perhaps a little intimidation would be in order before he killed him; perhaps it would be amusing. Bill's body went up in a ten foot pillar of flames, which disappeared into smoke to leave a Daedra just as tall. Kale slowly went back to the chamber with the two paths, chose the one with darkness at the end, and disappeared into flames again, reappearing in the darkness of the tunnel. Then he began walking back to the chamber, his hands alight with faint red flames, lighting the tunnel just enough to make him seem even more intimidating as he approached the man and his phoenix. |

"It seems we have a visitor," Nootua said as he turned his head to face the tall being behind them. Arikato also turned to look at the being. With a grunt he turned toward the lit path and began walking. "If you think you are going to intimidate me then you are sorely mistaken. If you are a player in this little game it would be best if we worked together. Unless you'd like to be lost forever," he said, "I've already lost two friends to this game and to be honest I do not have the time nor the care to deal with a trivial fight when I could be searching for a way to save them and us." Nootua looked from the creature to Arikato and back before saying, "Sorry. He's rather blunt. However he is right. Don't try to intimidate him. It'll only make matters worse for you if he decides to leave you here. Where are our manners? I am Nootua and my companion is Arikato. Pleased to make your acquaintance," he said with a bow before placing his talons on the ground and resizing to be the same size as Arikato. He slowly trotted next to him. "If your coming you'd better do it now. Or if you are an enemy then be forewarned I will not be merciful," Arikato said, with yet another grunt. He let the last part of his saying linger as if waiting for a response. He continued to walk not caring if this newcomer was following or not. "Something tells me this is going to be a long trip..." sighed Nootua, as he bent his neck slightly. "Come along. I don't think you are an enemy. This is the starting area so there is likely no monsters, which means you are a PC and as such you'll probably be wanting to find a way out just as much as us," he quipped, adding a bit of a cheerful tone to his voice. |

Kale shrunk down to his normal size, put out the flames in his hands, and followed after Arikato and Nootua. Bill would have been extremely angry after that reaction, but Kale took things in stride. "People just love ruining my fun, don't they, hm?" he said as he followed them. "Three questions," he started, grabbing Arikato by the shoulder and spinning him around, "one, who are you; two, what are you doing here; and three, what is this place?" He stared a hole in Arikato. |

Arikato brushed Kale's hand off his shoulder and then said, "One: Nootua already mentioned our names. Two: That's typically classified but since you're stuck here too you might as well know. We were sent here originally to figure out what these disappearances were about and to find our friends. We've lost two of our good friends to this... Game. If you can really call it that. To be honest I don't know if this is a game or an alternate dimension. Wouldn't surprise me. Three: Well by the looks of it some cave systems within the Game." He quickly turned around began walking again. Nootua merely sighed and shrugged before trotting to Arikato's side. They soon rounded the corner which lead into a large cavern with lanterns on four places on the ceiling. In the center was a large pyramid-like structure. As they stepped further into the large cavern the field went white and the structures shifted in and out of existence. It did this for a few seconds before returning to normal. It didn't change again. "What... Was that?" Nootua said, his voice almost quivering as if in fear. "Okay... Now that... That surprised me," Arikato said, his eyes wide. "Well let's get a move on then. Might as well see what we are up against," he said and then walked into the entrance of the pyramid. |

"One," Kale said, following the conversation pattern as he followed Arikato and Nootua, "your names don't tell me much about you. I could tell you my name's Kale, but it wouldn't tell you a thing about who I am, what I do, what my motives are, my strengths, weaknesses, powers. "Two: I'm well aware of the disappearances, though I could give less of a damn about your friends and have my own reasons for being here. And by the way: definitely a virtual simulation. I've been to alternate dimensions--hell, I come from one--and this ain't one. "Three: That doesn't tell me anything more than I'd already figured. You're a useless sort, aren't you?" Kale tilted his head as the strange phenomenon occurred, causing things to fade in and out of existence. "Glitch," he answered Nootua, "obviously." He followed Arikato into the strange pyramid structure. "So what are we looking for, or trying to accomplish?" Kale asked. He didn't much like being out of the loop. |

"Your guess is about as good as mine," Arikato sighed. "We honestly don't know much about this place other than what little we've been able to gleam from bits and pieces of encrypted data that's been scattered about the web," he said as they walked down the pathway. Torches lit up on either side as they entered into the main chamber. A staircase that seemed to spiral upwards was in the middle. It looked almost new and it spun in an upwards direction almost like an elevator of sorts. "Essentially what we know is that this place is completely artificial however it seems to exist outside of our reality. There is no connection to our world once you enter. Or any world for that matter. It's almost like we are inside of a artificially-made pocket dimension. As we saw earlier there was a glitch in the system. Probably a system bug but it can't be good for us. If this sector is lost we may too be lost forever," Nootua said. His eyes were pointed upwards to the area where the staircase reached the ceiling. "As for a more in-depth description of who we are... Well let's see we are a part of the Twinsanity Detective Agency. Before that we were bounty hunters that lived off of whatever money we could scrounge up. Arikato was abandoned to die in the sewers of Japan but he was rescued by an elderly lady who raised him until he was old enough to venture out on his own. Several years down the line and several bounties already under his belt, he began to hear word of an old man who held a rather rare item and someone very high up would definitely be interested in it. After he found the man he came to find that it was an egg. The man gave it to him and gave him a warning and a prophecy. 'Through bond of flame and heart a friendship shall be born that will be the beginning of many things and the end of much more. A gift and a curse' Arikato like me shall one day die but when that day comes we shall both be reborn anew and live as companions for all eternity. However he will never be allowed true happiness. All those around him will one day cease to exist and he will have to make new friends, over and over and over again," his voice was dark and sad at this point. They were around the halfway point of the spiral staircase by now. Arikato did not respond. His eyes were fixed on the ceiling above. He kept having this strange feeling like it was a trap or something... |
