After 2 hours of gameplay, i was submerged into disappointment when i realized i just completed the first episode of The Walking Dead. Still though, i was also satisfied. It was an amazing game to note, and another favorite game of mine by Telltale Games. Now. Thoughts have been gathering into my mind, that the game is so amazing, i just gotta stack my thoughts into this thread. Here it goes. Now, when i first heard the game announced, i decided to stay away from it as much as i can. I'm not exactly a fan of horror, not a fan of zombies either. I have never read the comic (And yesterday i tried to, was confusing me like hell.), nor the TV series. Thus, my interest got away from the game. Just a week or so, the game was released. During that time, in a forum i frequent, lots of conversation started to gather up about this game, most likely brought up to me because my friend was a fan of zombie games. So, hey, i decided to check this out just for fun, thus i entered wikipedia. It turns out that i found out it wasn't just another left 4 dead shooter, but had a focus on emotion. It's considerable because Telltale Games has it's focus on point & clicking genre of entertaiment. This game was exactly it, but also added in QTE (Quick Time Events), something alike to their previous game called Jurassic Park. In fact, what actually drawn me into this game is the voice actors. Some of them were from my favorite series, Sam & Max. But that's not fully made me go and try it out. It was basically Telltale Games. Because they make some very good games and perfect the episodic thing to the finest, with the cliffhangers, and endings to a season's finale. Today, i have gathered up my wits, and downloaded The Walking Dead: Episode 1. So far, this is the only episode. Now then, let me rely my experiences on this. This will have lots of spoilers so perhaps don't read them. The opening, from the part where Lee Everett was arrested and to the part where Lee and his newfound friends reach Macon. This half of the game is all a part of a tutorial. Introducing you to dialogue, the consequences it has depending on what you choose to say, and of course the QTE as your faced with two zombies and the decision of who to save and what things to respond with. The game started it out slow and i like that unlike the comic, being hard to follow. The game let you catch up on what was going on, simply like that. The puzzles weren't that hard to figure out in all honesty, and the game gave out extremely obvious clues on how to do them. But perhaps, things will get harder in the next episode, as.. well, this is the first one and i guess it's obvious that things are easy so far. I really loved the zombie killing. I never expected Telltale Games to pull off the QTE event thing. Of course, when first facing a zombie, you might get a little confused and when the game tells you for example, to back away with the S/down arrow key, things are going so fast you can't catch up with what the UI is telling you and you get eaten. Of course, the game doesn't give you game overs and lets you start from the part where your attacked by a zombie. The QTE get more intense and harder, especially at the finale. Plus, my favorite part of the game was when you need to rescue a trapped survivor, by getting rid of all the zombies around the place. It was suspensful and very clever. Have i mentioned the graphics? They are pretty damn good. However the game doesn't give you a breath taking view, of course that's natural with the zombies running around and whatnot. Now, someone correct me if i'm wrong on what i'm about to say but i like how the game uses cel shading. Is that what it uses? Because, the graphics look vastly different from Telltale's other games. I like that though. The character's models are very well detailed, along with the motion blur, the realistic shadows. And haven't i mentioned the fellow music as well? It's done by Jared Emerson-Johnson, also a fellow creator of the music in Sam & Max. Now when i hear his music, i am simply amazed because he is well aware on what to compose in a situation. The desperacy and fear during when the zombie babysitter attacks. The hope and depression in the Pharmacy's/Pharmacy Office. It speaks out to you in the most appropriate fashion there is. However, i really want to complain about the length of this. This is a one problem Telltale games have. Most of their games only take up 2 hours and that's how long it took me to finish this entirely. Of course, i understand that they only have a month to complete a one episode so they can't make it any longer. Now, in the usual games Telltale has, it takes muuch more time when you decide to explore and talk with everyone, stuff like that. However, The Walking Dead doesn't have much to explore. Nearly everything that can be explored is essential to a puzzle. There are still some things that aren't needed to complete the game but you can still look at them, but not that much to satisfy a gamer like myself. Overall? I love this game and i simply can't wait for the second one, to play it and finish it up. I really want Telltale to give more things i can look at though. But besides that, everything is great about it. This was Max and i'm out. |
