Do you think that there's an age where you're too young for depression? I don't mean to put my problems publicly on the forum but my Grandma had said I was too young for depression and I told her I wasn't. She insists I am.

But I just want to to know, do you think it's possible for someone to be 'too young' for depression? And do you think depression can be severe at any age?

@Miku: It doesn't have to be about you. This topic applies to me (only reason why I'm posting). I've been to mental institutions and it doesn't matter how young you are. You are never too young to be depressed. Though, Depression is a very dangerous matter that leads to many cycles. One of the cycles I've actually made myself. ^_^

Thanks for editing my post Bliz. ^_^

Yeah, pretty much what I said, Miku. I already know you have depression, but yeah, I'm not an expert. I tell you from what I've been through. Abuse and neglect can take a major role in depression. Like, I make a pretty long list of mental illnesses I have. My major one is Bipolar I.

I know depression can exist at ages as young as 9, as I know a diagnosed person.
That said, depression is most often diagnosed in the teen years because, much like Hinamizawa Syndrome, it tends to start manifesting during a stressful time or shocking event. And being a teenager is much more stressful than being a child in most circumstances.

Wait.

Did a real life, quite possibly deadly, chemical imbalance in the brain just get compared to a fictional disease from an anime?

Haha oh wow.

Anyway, here.

It's not a question of how you view the disease socially - it's a psychological and biological issue. I don't understand the point of asking a forum, since the answer is out there in medical and psychology books.

my Grandma had said I was too young for depression and I told her I wasn't. She insists I am.
Don't forget, your grandmother grew up in a period of time when psychology was still regarded as kind of a pseudoscience, and was nowhere near as developed and refined as it is today (even though qutie a lot of it is still theoretical). Her perspective will of course be biased.

I'm gonna repeat what several others have said; depression can be diagnosed in pre-teen years, so yeah, not 'too early' at all, assuming you're 13 or older. Having said that, many doctors are very quick to diagnose mental illness these days, so yeah, always best to get a second (or even third) opinion before throwing your hands up and saying "Welp, guess I've got the mental imbalances now".
This is pretty much all there is to say on the matter.
Of course, just throwing your hands up is never what you should do about it, although I know you in particular aren't, Miku. ^_^

Good to be back
I don't think depression really has a set age range, but I do think there are a lot of people out there who consider themselves to be "depressed" when speaking from a medical point of view, there's nothing wrong with them. I know someone who is clinically depressed, and sheesh, trying to compare them to some people I say parading around the school claiming to be "depressed" because their boyfriend dumped them... Frankly, there's no similarity.
