Do you think that there's an age where you're too young for depression? I don't mean to put my problems publicly on the forum but my Grandma had said I was too young for depression and I told her I wasn't. She insists I am.

But I just want to to know, do you think it's possible for someone to be 'too young' for depression? And do you think depression can be severe at any age?

Of course, depression has nothing to do with age. If your in your early teens, you shouldn't really have anything to be depressed about. However, if you've been diagnosed with clinical depression, it's a different story!

I still can't use this.

While I don't think a 3 year old is gonna have major clinical depression, such a disorder can be diagnosed as early as your pre-teen years.

*nod* I've been diagnosed with depression, so I'm sure that it's possible to be diagnosed at such an age as you said, Bliz.

But yeah I think pre teens is usually around the age they start getting diagnosed i guess.

TIME TO REALLY EXPLODE!
In one of my neuroscience classes, we were told about a preschooler case of Major Depressive Disorder (MDD). I'm assuming you're older than a preschooler, so it's not an impossibility for you to have MDD.

Ultimately, I absolutely do not think anyone is too young to be diagnosed, especially given MDD's biological and genetic basis.

Along that line, MDD can be severe at any age that it's diagnosed.

It is possible. A good friend of mine was 13 when she was diagnosed with manic depressiveness.

Yep.
I think i was diagnosed with depression back when i was 10 or 11. Back then, i went on vacation and noticable aggression problems were getting into me. Then people diagnosed me, turns out i have a depressions.

I'm not sure if age matters but i noticed that teenagers terrifyingly often are diagnosed with the depressive disorder, so perhaps the age when you can get depressions is 10-to-the rest of your life, in that way.

Still, i don't know. I'm just stating a simplimistic theory that came up to my mind.

I can't say 'cause I don't get depressed that easily, I just have little bouts of sadness every now and again. :L

But then again, I remember I started getting emotionally 'deep' at the age of about 10 or 11. ;P

my Grandma had said I was too young for depression and I told her I wasn't. She insists I am.
Don't forget, your grandmother grew up in a period of time when psychology was still regarded as kind of a pseudoscience, and was nowhere near as developed and refined as it is today (even though qutie a lot of it is still theoretical). Her perspective will of course be biased.

I'm gonna repeat what several others have said; depression can be diagnosed in pre-teen years, so yeah, not 'too early' at all, assuming you're 13 or older. Having said that, many doctors are very quick to diagnose mental illness these days, so yeah, always best to get a second (or even third) opinion before throwing your hands up and saying "Welp, guess I've got the mental imbalances now".

I would say anyone, no matter the age has the possibility of developing depression. It might be a bit less likely in the younger groups, but I don't think there's a point where a person could be "too young."

Well, my mom is going to work in social working and she diagnoses people and she is going to work with them and their problems. She said if she officially was a social worker right now, she would offically diagnose me with depression.

Personally I think I have severe depression, but that's just me. But, yeah I know my Grandma is like that. I know it will be biased.

Too young for depression? No. There is no age that is too young or too old for depression. I've been depressed and confused since my age of 4...I actually have a grey hair now, which scares me. But honestly, no one is too old for depression for that would be saying that people are too young to be upset or cry. Indeed, it's much more dangerous to be depressed at a young age because...well...kids tend to have a very creative imagination at that time. Kind of like me at age 13.

It's possible to get depression even around your age. May I ask why you feel this way though?

@Shallow Bay Yeah. I understand where you're coming from, sorta.

And @ Fenroar just self esteem, and voices in my head telling me negative things.

I dont wanna make this thread about me though!

@Miku: Ah, okay. If you don't want to talk about it then that's fine. Might wanna tell your parents and let them know how serious you are though if it continues to be a problem.
