So, here's the story. Yesterday, i have downloaded something. While trying to get it to launch, i then noticed something that terrified me: My Disk C's memory was randomly starting to drain itself. I restarted the laptop when i noticed i had only one GB left on Disk C. After the restart, it had over 6 GBs. After that, i decided to do a virus scan, and i guess everything returned in it's place. Thus, i deleted a couple files to make the Disk C have around 20 GBs left. I just about succeeded, deleting enough files so there's 19,7 GBs on the Disk. However, something is still worrying me. Still a little panicy, i look from time to time on how much free space Disk C has. Then just now, it has 19,6 GBs, despite me not doing anything! Then, it raises up once again to 19,7 GBs and this process repeats. Is this natural, or is something wrong with my computer? I attempted to do defragmention but people say it takes over 12 hours, and i don't have that much time. Can someone please help me? Edited by Clementine, May 31 2012, 03:52 AM.

It would probably help to know what you downloaded, and where from. I really don't know too much about computers, but I assume that information would be useful for someone who does. I suspect a virus of some sort, but as said my computer knowledge is slim so I could be wrong. |

First off, it's time to dispel some tech myths. Viruses do not normally take up space exponentially. In fact viral code in itself can be as small as a handful of kilobytes. Also the only "memory" that comes into play with a hard drive is virtual memory, a special Windows multitasking scheme that takes data that isn't being frequently accessed in a current RAM session and putting it to a large disk file, swapping it out of there whenever necessary. My guess is that there's a bunch of system caches and the like that haven't been cleaned out. Try a free application like Piriform's CCleaner and see if that cleans some things up. If you want me to take a look at your system configuration, download the free TeamViewer remote access application and send me a PM with the system ID and password for your system that it generates. |
