Alrighty, for those of you Who have RPed in My Elemental Amulets Role-play, you know how it died Fairly quickly. In all honesty, I mostly blame myself on that. I had not fully developed that RP, nearly at all. So, in Order to do that, along with solidify the true back story of a Character of Mine, I have decided to Write this, The Prologue, of the Elemental Amulets. Hope you enjoy, feel free to make comments as I add to this story.

Epilogue

There, in a strangely half spherical cave, with stalagmites hanging down, but no stalactites, Akashi stood over the body of the final Amulet Master, panting, sweaty, exhausted, with most of his armor knocked off, as he hadn’t had time to reattach it all. Sword on ground and in his hand, shattered. He had done it: he had completed his quest. He had accomplished what he had set out to do, and more. He had completed his life's goal, and then some... or had it been his life goal? Had it been his quest? Had he set out to do it of his will, or of an other’s?

Slowly, he straightened, looking back to see a man, hunched over in long, flowing robes. The robes were almost black, with a slight tint of blue, and yet, the man stood his tallest, with a large grin across his face, or rather, as far as anyone could see, he was. He wore mask, now broken as Akashi’s blade, and it hid part of his face. It had been broken in two during the fight. Strangely, the mask half that was still worn- which bore a grinning visage, totally opposite the missing half- still clung to his face. With his creepy grin and mask, it looked as if he had just been told some obscene joke.

“Well done, Akashi. We’ve destroyed the Amulet Masters, but not only that, we have obtained their power! We are now the only ones who possess this power, and with it-” the man was almost manic in his obvious glee, “-we can rule this land, punishing all those who stand in our way!” Akashi turned to face the man fully. “It would be so simple! We could simply waltz into the throne room, ‘remove’ that oaf, Venlor, and then sit upon his, no our, chair, and presto! No one would be stupid enough to challenge us, and those dumb enough to do so,” the man was obviously fervid with thoughts of power, would be smote down quickly, with extreme prejudice, making us the absolute-!”

“Worst tyrants in all history.” Akashi interrupted. “No, Vachni, we will not seek the throne, or at least I will not. But know this, if you go seeking the throne, try to play ‘little conqueror’ I will end you, no matter how you helped me in this quest.”

Vachni seemed caught off guard by this statement. Also, a great swell of absolute fury rose up in the back of Akashi’s mind. But, he ignored it, knowing it wasn’t his anger. He sheathed his sword. “And neither of you can convince me otherwise.” he finished. He strode from the cavern, reconstructing his shadow armor and his dark blade. “Come Vachni. Even if he should rise again, I’ve crippled his body beyond ever challenging us again.”

Vachni took a quick glance to the final Amulet Master, the latest victim of the Duo’s onslaught. “.... Very well, Akashi, I guess you have a point.” Vachni whispered, following behind Akashi.

As they proceeded out of the Cave, Akashi was adrift in memory. He sought some meaning. Some reason. He thought back, looking for something he had missed... something.... anything, to make meaning of this... spree... of murders...

Chapter 1: Departure

On the edge of a city, Zennou to be precise, on the outskirt of the Enudanian Desert, stood a man, with black pants and long sleeve shirt, and a red t-shirt over it. He had a pack strapped on his back, and a long broadsword hooked up to his belt, hand holding the handle, to hold it still. Along the outskirts of the town, were houses that looked like they had been formed from the sand around, which was a light brown color, with occasional bits of dark brown. It was just morning, so no one was up and about yet.

Just as the man went to step, a cough was heard. Not a sickly cough, more an ‘Ahem!’. “Where do you think your going, Akashi?”

Without turning around, Akashi laughed, causing his short, spiky red hair to bounce a little, revealing a symbol above his right eye, colored red. “What does it matter to you, Ayase?”

“It matters, because as your brother, I’m responsible for enforcing our fathers will, and you know perfectly well that he ordered that you stay in the City.”

“Have you ever wondered WHY he ordered that?” Akashi ast a mocking smile, but with his eyes narrowed in a glare.

“Wondered, yes. Asked around, No.” Ayase answered. He had his arms crossed, leaning on his left leg. He also wore black pants, but he had a blue shirt on. On his belt were a set of twin daggers, with pearls for pommels. “Akashi, I really don’t want you getting angry and going on another one of your rampages, so come on, step back into the city. You can talk with father about being allowed out when he gets back from business. You have no idea how hard it is, being the leader of a city.”

“Heh.... hehehe, If you were able to convince me away from this, Ayase, you’d be able to tell me watching sand harden was cool, and I’d believe you. Unfortunately, you can’t.” Akashi then started walking away, before spinning, sword drawn in a slash that drove Ayase back, who had drawn his dagger, and had tried to rush Him. “Ayase, we’ve done this enough times, and the result is always the same.”

“Yeah, you may drive me back, but I wear you out insanely.” Ayase said, a smug look.

“Not this time. The shadows are on my side this time.” Akashi said, waving his hand in the direction of a dark alley, to sweep it towards Ayase, quickly shifting to only pointing a finger at him. Suddenly, the shadows stretched out from the alleyway, and quickly tapered down to a spike that rapidly extended towards Ayase, who nimbly deflected the spike with his dagger, to try and rush Akashi again, but this time, he waved his hand up from the ground, to the sky, causing a wall of dark energy to pop up from the ground, that when Ayase went to strike it, had a physical form.

Ayase’s eyes went wide at the wall. ‘There hadn’t been any shadows there! Did he create it from nothing!?’ He thought as he retreated a step, and very narrowly dodged another spike from another alley, by basically limboing under it. He retreated a bit more, knowing he’d be doomed if he continued his frontal assault. Akashi was not messing around this time.

“Wow, Ayase, I’ve never seen you panic before, as slight as your facial expression changes.” Akashi said, as he waved his hand through the shield, causing it to spiral around his hand, as though it were nothing but air, before it congealed into a sphere floating a couple inches from his hand, about the size of his head. “Interesting stuff you learn, when you finally start talking back to yourself.” he said cryptically, observing the sphere floating above his palm. Almost instantly, it extended into another blade, the size of a Katana, and all too familiar in shape and color, to Ayase.

“T-that’s fathers blade!?” Ayase accused, yet questioned at the same time, confused as to how Akashi had instantly made their fathers blade, who claimed his was one of a kind.

“No, this is simply a physical form of shadow energy; same as fathers. Sorry Ayase, but fathers claims to a one of a kind blade; false. It is nothing more than the concentration of dark energy into this shape, and focused, to be given physical form.” Akashi explained.

“What- What are you talking about? You’ve never been able to do this before, and father never does either!” Ayase yelled, waving a hand at Akashi.

“Tell me Ayase; we’re you always able to freeze your water? No, you discovered that after becoming proficient in your water element. Lets just say, I had a heart to heart with myself, a while ago, and gained this new ability; the manifestation of dark energy.” Akashi said, as the sword seemed to seep into his hand. “It is rather handy; if I can think of it, I can create it. Or rather, add on, in this case.” He said, as he held his broadsword with both hands, at the ready, towards Ayase. “Watch, brother, and behold my power.” He said, his eyes almost darkening. Suddenly, his blade grew black, then Widened and lengthened, until it was almost as wide as his shoulder blade to the other shoulder blade, and as long as from his neck to his ankles. “Shiminuki.” he stated simply.

Ayase drew his second dagger, knowing that if he held back at all, Akashi would be very capable of killing him. “So, you’re gonna pull out all the stops you can imagine, huh? Fine then, so will I!” Suddenly, water burst forth from the hilts, extending his blades, before freezing, sharp as any other blade.

“Kōri no ha, Huh? Fine, My Shiminuki will happily break those!” Akashi yelled, as he charged forward, sword ready to swing in a diagonally upward slash.
“Just try and see if you can, Akashi!” Ayase charged forward as well, his blades ready to cross perpendicular to Akashi’s blade.

Once they collided, the exchanged a series of strikes, at an extremely high, yet dexterous speed, far faster than should have been capable of performing with a weapon as large as The Shiminuki.

‘How is he moving that huge sword so easily!? It’s as though it’s moving on his will, rather than his muscles!’ Ayase thought, as he found himself slowly going on the defensive. Then, he took a step back... then another... then another, and another. With a touch of fear, Ayase realised, he wasn’t fighting Akashi, he was holding him off, and even then, only barely. ‘Damnit! The hell is going on, this shouldn’t be happening! He’s not even sweating!’ Ayase raged in his mind.

“... Well, that’s enough with the play time.” Akashi said, his smile spreading. “Time to finish this.” He then went, and struck downward as hard as he could.

Ayase had no choice but to use his Kori no Ha to block, as he tried to retreat. However, as Akashi’s sword swung down, the Kori no Ha shattered, and a strike came down his torso, straight down from his left shoulder. “AAAAAGH!!” Ayase screamed in pain, as he fell backwards. He then tried to stem the bleeding, by putting pressure along the cut. “Guh...! You... You shattered them... How...?!” Ayase asked, forcing through the pain.

“It doesn’t matter how sharp you make your ice, If it comes across something that it can’t cut, then it only has one other strength; its solidity. Though, when bashed against something even harder, at a stronger force, eventually, even an Iceberg will break.” Akashi said, standing over Ayase.

‘I didn’t even scratch him! He toyed with me, until the very end! Is this how much he advanced, just by...” Ayase wondered, clenching his teeth in pain.
“Be happy; I avoided any major arteries, and the wound isn’t as deep as I had meant it, meaning you held me off for just a second, but it was enough to save your ass.” Akashi said, waving his sword, absorbing the dark energy back into himself, leaving just the broadsword, Which he then Sheathed, and turned to start walking off.

“Wait, Akashi, father sai-” Ayase started, as he tried to get up, only see Akashi stop, and turn toward him slowly. Ayase could only see one of his pupils, that had extended up and down, like that of a cats... No... like a dragons.

“... Ayase, I’ll tell you this now: If you attempt to stop me right here and now again, you... will... Die.” He said, his voice changing in pitch, yet seeming to stay the same... No, it was as though another person had said the last word, at the exact same time as Akashi.

For whatever reason that Ayase could not comprehend, a wave of fear washed over him, as he realized, Akashi WOULD kill him.

After staring at Ayase- which to Ayase seemed more akin to a glare- for a couple more seconds, to make sure Ayase got the hint, Akashi then turned, and proceeded to leave the town, at a leisurely stroll, scooping up his backpack as he passed it.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

As he strolled across the rolling dunes, Akashi thought over his recent brawl with Ayase. He seemed to have overpowered him far too easily, he had been expecting him to at least put up some of a fight. Or had he just grown that much stronger, with his power to create his own shadows, along with control shadows already existing. ‘I need a name for this power...’ He thought to himself as he walked. He then remembered back to when he had broken Ayase’s Kori no Ha. Despite what he had said, for some reason he couldn’t fathom, He had meant to hit a major artery, and no matter how cocky he had tried to act, Ayase had held him off for more than a mere second, and he HAD meant to kill Ayase... Yet why he had wanted to, he couldn’t understand. ‘It doesn’t matter what a brother’s done, there’s no way another brother could feel... Excitement? Joy? … when attacking them.’ He thought, as he continued walking.

As he continued to walk, slowly, the sand shifted behind him. Akashi was too deep in thought to realise, as the trailing mound continued to follow, inching ever closer with every passing moment. Suddenly, it seemed to stop, right before Akashi turned around.

‘Odd... I’m sure I heard something behind m-’’ Akashi thought, when suddenly, A Hammer-Lizard burst up from the ground in the path he had been walking. Hammer-Lizards ranged from a length of about 5” to anything up to 15” from tip of nose, to tip of tail. Its head was shaped much like that of a Hammerhead sharks head, but had the body of a desert salamander, which is what its name is derived from.

Having grown up in the desert, Akashi had been well taught about how to counter all the beasts of the deserts hunting methods, but that still didn’t stop him from stepping backward... right into the mound the Hammer-Lizard had left. Just as he did, he realized his mistake. The mound collapsed under his foot, causing him to lose his footing, and to bury half his leg into the sand. Only then, did he fully remember the lessons.

‘If ever you should happen to be lucky enough that a Hammer-Lizard should miss you with its initial rising lunge, NEVER step backward. They always approach from behind, leaving a very weak tunnel, that looks from the surface, like a simple mound. Should you step onto this mound, your leg will punch through the roof of the tunnel, making you lose your footing. True, that’d be simple to fix- Simply pull your leg up before it attacked again- If it weren’t for the fact that the rest of the tunnel collapses around your leg, often devouring a full leg, which is nearly impossible to remove without time. That’s how the Hammer-Lizard sets up for its second attempt, which it rarely ever misses. If your leg gets stuck, you're almost assuredly as good as dead.’ The voice of his teacher rang through his head.

‘Damn-it, there’s no way, I’m gonna let some scaled thing eat me!’ Akashi thought, as he drew his sword, his face becoming immediately defiant, as if he meant to take on the whole world. The Hammer-Lizard pulled itself out of the hole slowly, being a slow creature, who relied on ambush tactics to obtain its prey.

Don’t be fooled. If it was always that slow, there’s no way it’d be able to do a lunge like what it just did. It’s gotta have SOME speed, even if only in short bursts. Akashi thought, as it turned towards him.

It stared at him, it's tan skin, shining in the sun, from the slight film of mucus it secreted across its skin, that made the weak tunnels it created capable of staying built. There, it stared at him, it black spheres, the size of Akashi’s head, staring at him. There, Akashi stared back at the Hammer-Lizard, the 7 foot long lizard, with the head of a hammerhead shark, its mouth fully capable of swallowing him whole, a look of sheer determination, and defiance across his face, with his broadsword draw, and ready for the thing to charge him. His short, bright red hair rustled slightly, in the ever present wind of the desert lands, that Akashi knew as his home- as the home he was leaving.

Just then, it started to step forward, ever so slowly. Akashi could tell then, that he wasn’t in its lunging distance yet. That meant he’d have time to try and pry his leg from the tunnel of the Hammer-Lizard he had accidentally stepped on top of, collapsing it, and the sand around it, down and around his leg, up to a little above his knee. That little time would be critical, because if he couldn’t get free before long, the creature before him would almost assuredly devour him whole. So, there, he started moving his leg, trying to dislodge it, little by little, hoping he would be capable of fending off this beast, long enough to free himself.

Unfortunately, he didn’t have as long as he would have hoped for. Just as he started to pry his leg free, the Hammer-Lizard lunged forward, clearing the gap of twenty feet in only a couple steps, that sent sand flying up, as though a bomb had been placed there. As it lunged at him, Akashi had only the slightest bit of time to swing his sword from his side, up and over his head in a great arc, imagining a wave of energy expanding out from this arc. As he started the arc, his blade turned pitch black, and as he swung the arc, a trail of some black substance was left in its wake. surprisingly, just as he finished the arc, it sped forward to combat the creature. It collided solidly, and after a brief moment of each other trying to force the other back, the Hammer-Lizards burst of energy gave out, and was sent backward, and sent flying for a good thirty feet, before landing and bouncing another five.

Immediately, Akashi began trying to dislodge his leg again. He didn’t know how long he’d have before the Hammer-Lizard would roll over and be back to rushing-

Just then, As Akashi glanced at it, he saw the last bit of its tail go under ground. Akashi was shocked. Either the creature was running, deciding Akashi wasn’t worth the effort...

Or going for another lung from underground. That appeared to be the case, because he couldn’t see the tell tale sign that a Hammer-Lizard was stalking you, the rising mound of its passage, anywhere. That meant it was going completely underground.

Akashi then realized his plight; If he didn’t free his leg before it arose, he’d be as good as dead. Desperation gave him an epiphany. Imagining a sphere of that dark stuff around his leg, he saw just the top part of this sphere pop out from his leg, and go down into the sand. He then imagined it all lifting out of the air, and being throw a bit, making a motion with his hand to help direct this image. Sure enough, his leg, and consecutively, himself, were lifted up out of the sand- Though to Akashi, it felt mentally, as if he were lifting a large sac of stone- and then got thrown away about five feet from where he had been. as he landed, he stopped concentrating on the sphere around his leg, and it suddenly disappeared, letting all the sand that it had held during his brief flight spill out, freeing his leg as it all fell without bouncing, as Akashi continued for another foot. Akashi sat up, just fast enough to see the Hammer-Lizard lunge up at where he had been, and had he been there, he definitely would have been swallowed whole.

As it landed, fiddling with the amount of sand it had just eaten, looking for the food it thought should be in there, Akashi stood up, his leg a little sore from having been the spot he had tossed himself with, he ran up to the creature, jumped up onto its back, his great-sword held in his hand, as he ran up its back towards the head, He jumped one last time, as the lizard tried to find out what was on its back, but its forward based field of view didn’t allow it to look, and its neck wasn’t flexible enough to let it see Akashi, as he stabbed his Great-sword into the base of the Lizards neck, and imagined a line of that dark substance to spread from his blade, in a line from the front and back of the blade, out sideways. Again, the substance immediately projected from where he wanted, creating effectively, a wall of dark energy, in the middle of the Hammer-Lizards neck. After the tiniest of a squeak of what could only be thought of as pain, the head and body held perfectly still. Suddenly, the head fell forward, completely severed from the body, that was quick in following the example of the head.

Akashi stopped thinking of the wall of energy, and as such, it vanished again. he then knelt on top of the Hammer-Lizards corpse, taking a few deep and heavy breaths. ‘I see... this new power, it takes your physical energy, and converts it to whatever you could need... It also takes on mental thought to maintain its physical form.’ Akashi thought, as he reflected on his most current win.

After regaining his strength, from his latest fight, he wiped his blade off on the lizards carcass, sheathed his blade, and then, using his foot steps from before the attack, to determine his path, resumed in the direction he had been going. Already, his mind was wandering to what may lay ahead on his journey.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The day rolled on without another incident, and the day finally began to darken, as it approached night. Akashi had been lost in thought, as he continued his seemingly endless trek across the nearly endless sea of sand and hills. ‘This’d be so much faster if I had a horse, or camel; I’d already be at a small oasis by now.’ He kicked a small dune of sand, sending it bursting forward to settle and seem to disappear in the sea of sand. Continuing his voyage by foot, eventually he had to stop, and eat. He plopped himself down into the sand, and pulled off his back, sighing in relief. “Yeash, I should have taken a horse, or camel, definitely. Would have made carrying this bag a whole lot easier... Wait... Right, that Hammer-Lizard would have eaten it whole, if I had gotten off of it, probly even if I hadn’t. still, It’s heavy.” While muttering, he rummaged through his pack, to pull out a loaf of dried bread he had grabbed on his leave from Enudinai. Silently he began to take bites out of it, chewing for a while on the tough bread.

Akashi sat on the sand, under the night sky. He looked at his hand, to realize he could barely see it compared to the sand. ‘Moon’s not out yet. I’ll wait a little bit more. in the meantime...’ He held his hand away from him, as suddenly a burst of fire formed above the palm of his hand, producing heat and light. ‘Fire. the most destructive force in real nature, and...’ Keeping the bread in his mouth, held out his other palm, as a sphere of that dark energy formed over his hand, now visible from the light of fire. ‘Darkness, the most destructive force in mythological nature.’ He felt a surge of excitement boil from deep inside himself. he slowly started to move the two powers together, before suddenly, cutting his concentration a howl rang out across the desert. It was close too. When he looked back, both of his energies had poofed away. he stood up, and recreated his fire in his left hand, as he drew his sword with his right.

“Damn desert wolves, always scavenging whatever they can... but that’s odd. If they’re scavenging, why are they coming towards me?” Akashi pondered to himself, as the desert wolves continued towards him, snarling, occasionally snapping their jaws. Once they got close, Akashi heard a snarl behind him. It was then, that Akashi realized the reasons why; they were starving... and, they had him surrounded.

Chapter 2: His Strength

Akashi kept himself spinning so that they wouldn’t be able to attack him from behind. No wonder they were confident that they could take down a meal, instead of just eating the leftovers; there was at least a good 35, maybe more, of the wolves. Even a Hammer-Lizard would have trouble with this many wolves attacking it. He wondered if he really could take on this many, himself. After all, he’d never really had to fight any of them, even when he would go out of the city, though with others. But still, most of the time, they just hollered and waved fire to make them-

Akashi then had an epiphany. What was he holding in his left hand? He would have facepalmed, if that didn’t mean slamming fire into his face. He raised his palm towards the wolves in front of him., and waved his hand from his right to his left, having the fire spout out as if from a hose. The wolves all yipped in fear, and backed up. That gave Akashi confidence, until he felt a bite on his leg. One of the wolves had taken the moment he used to spread fire at the wolves in front of him, to attack from behind. Akashi cried out in pain, as the wolf quickly backed up, anticipating the slash of his broadsword. ‘They’ve got experience!?’ Akashi's eyes widened, realizing he hoped that wasn’t the case. If they had experience fighting in this tactic, Akashi may not make it out of this alive.

Akashi stood back up quickly, and before he realized it, as if in slow motion, he felt his arm whip out to behind him, as it cut out a wolf, that had lunged for him, in mid air. ‘Wha-?’ He wondered, before he realized he didn’t have time to think, as they continued to lunge at his back, to which he cast another wave of fire, now to the wolves on his left, and left the right side to his sword, and his back side to his reflexes. After a bit, he again felt his left arm go and point over his shoulder to spray a gout of fire at another lunging wolf, before spinning to slice and bat it out of the air with his broadsword. After he took down those 5, or six, the others started to back down a bit. ‘Good, they’re getting the idea. Maybe now they’ll back off.’

Just then, Akashi heard a loud barking, a few snarls, at then a yelp of another wolf from behind him. Akashi turned around, to see a wolf, twice the size of the others, a desert wolf under its paw, as it barked around, seemingly at the other wolves.

‘The Alpha, huh? No wonder they’ve gotten confidence. He’s become the brain behind gathering all of these little guys. Damn dune wolf.’ Akashi thought, as he formed a spear of fire in his hand, and threw it toward the dune wolf.

The dune wolf simply batted it out of the air, with its paw. This wolf was huge, Its back was level with Akashi’s shoulder. ‘Jeez, so that thing isn’t scared of fire, huh? Crap, that’ll make this harder.’ He again went to slash a wolf as it tried to approach him from behind, but just as he started to turn, another one lunged at him, as the first one revealed that its attack had been a feint. ‘No way...!’ Akashi then bit back the cry of pain, as the wolf bit down onto his forearm not holding his sword, swiped at his leg, leaving long gashes, and then retreated as Akashi brought his broadsword around to try and hit the wolf. ‘I’ve gotta get out of this circle, If i don’t, they’re gonna rip me to shreds.’ Akashi dashed away from the dune wolf, as he fired a gout of flame from his injured arm. Suddenly, it became painfully obvious that such a tactic wouldn’t work. The first of the wolves parted, but then the others held strong, as they lunged at him, as did the ones who parted to the side.
‘fudge!’ Akshi tried to stop, but in the slippery sand, his feet kept going, causing him to fall on his back. However, that turned out to be his saving grace. The wolves that had lunged at him, all collided together above where he had been, falling with a painful yelp. Akashi rolled further, using what was left of his forward momentum to roll up into a crouch.

He was out of the circle. ‘Good, this should make it easier t-’ Akashi’s eyes went wide. He saw the dune wolf just advance towards Akashi’s pack, and began to fiddle at the bag, presumably trying to open it. ‘So, that’s what they were after. Well, sorry to disappoint, but you can’t have that!’ Akashi then dashed forward, and then imagined a flat thing of shadow on the bottom of his foot, suddenly extending downwards, solid the whole way. Sure enough, when he jumped, he was propelled off this expansion over the other wolves. While flying, he raised his sword over his head, and expanded it into his Shiminuki, and as he approached the dune wolf, he brought it down in a great downward arc.

At the last second, the dune wolf saw it, and retreated just out of the way of a fatal blow. The shiminuki slid down from the dune wolves forehead, through its right eye, and down into its snarling lips, as it continued down into the sand, leaving a long slice that would more than definitely heal into a scar. The wolf howled in pain, as it backed up several steps, out of the range of Shiminuki, and batted at its eye, as if rubbing it. After a moment, it looked up at Akashi, and growled, barring all of its fangs. Akashi could see now that he had clearly gotten the wolves eye, blinding it in that eye. “Serves you right, for trying to steal my food.” Akashi placed his sword on his shoulder casually. He had no sympathy for the wolf, or any of its pack. It had not only tried to kill him directly, it had then tried to indirectly, by stealing his food. He reached down with his free but injured hand, picked up his unopened pack, and placed it onto his back, the whole time, keeping an eye on the dune wolf. “I doubt you know what i’m saying, but if you want to live, then you’ll leave now.” He glared at the dune wolf, as defiantly as the wolf glared at him.
Suddenly, without letting its eye off of Akashi, turned its head to both sides, barking a couple times to each. As one, they began to go around Akashi, to stand behind the dune wolf. Several limped severely, while others simply just whined, until a fellow wolf went over, and bit and snapped their necks. ‘Sparing them from pain...? They are smart. Glad I didn’t have to fight them to the end.’ Akashi then began to back up, until they both felt they were a fair distance, before they both turned to leave.

As Akashi continued on his path, he reflected upon his most recent encounter. He reflected upon every aspect of the fight, critiquing his every move, and every possible choice that could have been better at the moment. He then had an idea. Could he have just made himself a dome, similar to when he had made that shield, against Ayases strike? If so, would he have to stay awake to keep it up, or would he have been able to sleep with it? He doubted it, but he figured he may try it sometime.

Another possibility came to mind; Did the shadows he made have to be in contact with something, or could he send them flying? He stopped on his path, pointed his palm at a sand dune, and generated a sphere of dark energy. It hovered ever so slightly away from his hand, but that wasn’t the answer he was after. He imagined it zooming from his hand, to collide with the dune, before dispersing.

Amazingly, it followed along the exact course he had sent it upon, and it then burrowed part way into the hillside. Akashi lowered his palm, knowing it had disper-

Just then, the entire mound expanded rapidly, collapsing half the dune, and sending sand flying in every direction. Akashi was amazed. What could have caused such destruction? No animal he knew of was capable of exploding a sand dune. When after a moment, nothing more happened, he repeated his experiment, puzzled, but this time made sure to keep the orb on the surface. It landed in the hill, Akashi lowered his hand, during its flight. As soon as it hit the sand, the entire sphere erupted into an explosion, about the size of a medium explosive.

Akashi was stunned. To think something like this power would have so many uses. With a power like this, he just might be able to find his father.

And kill him.

The thought seemed to vanish, as soon as it got there. Akashi couldn’t even really remember thinking it, but he remembered it. He shook his head, before resuming his journey out of the desert. ‘Why would such a thought even come across my mind? I’m just going to ask him about my imprisonment in the city, really.’

‘Aren't I...?’

Chapter 3: It Might Not Be Enough

Akashi continued on his travels, after the night of the incident with the wolves from the night before. He was still imagining various ways he might be able to use his power, that he had dubbed ‘Manipulation of Shadow Energy’, or ‘Shadow Manipulation’ for the shorter way of saying it. He had toyed with a few of the smaller ideas, and had discovered that so long as the energy was there, he could form it into nearly anything he wanted, so long as the energy was enough to be the size he wanted it. If he really concentrated, he was able to go down to very fine detail, for example, the hair on a little shadow wolf, or even little bits of drool.

However, he learned of the drain that such extended usage of his power used. True, he was only using energy in the palm of his hand, but after a couple hours of molding it into various stuff, the drain become apparent on him. ‘So, shaping the energy isn’t free of cost either. There’s the fact that I have to imagine it, the energy consumed to produce the shadow, and then the energy to shape it. If used wrong, this could become a very costly power... However, the reverse is true as well. Used right, and it could become a near unstoppable power.’ Akashi thought, continuing on his way out of the desert.

‘Do I have it in me to use it right, though?’ The sliver of doubt wormed its way past Akashis stubborn confidence. Akashi tried to shake it off- literally shaking his head- but the worm had firmly lodged itself in the dirt of his mind, and was eating deeper.

“No, it’s not.” A deep voice from behind... Commanded? As that was the only way the tone of the voice could be described. Akashi whirled around, doubt suddenly exploding in his mind, from the shock, his hand instantly reaching for his-

“So predictable.” The man spoke, a pitch black katana already at Akashis neck. “Doubt at your strength, mixed with surprise, and you panic, lashing out first, asking questions later.” The man scolded coldly. Akashi then realized that a second katana- still in its sheath, and on the man's belt- was blocking Akashis sword hand from drawing his broadsword.

The man had black hair, down to about his neck, and wore a pitch black samurai style kimono, that had trimming of red flames. his eyes were half lidded, as if bored, and nearly as black as the night sky. In fact, the iris coloring seemed darker than the actual pupil. The man also stood about another half head taller than Akashi as well. “How many times do I have to tell you, you aren’t allowed to leave, without my express permission, and an armed contingent?”

Akashis rage boiled at the realization of who this man was. Akashi had to force his body to let go of the handle of his sword, and relax his body. However, the blades still stayed. “Well, I don’t see how you have any command of me any more. I’ve passed my coming of age nearly four years ago, and have faired well enough on my own out here, having killed a Hammer-Lizard, and driving back a pack of about 35 desert wolves, a dune wolf, its Alpha.” Akashi explained, looking straight ahead, so as to not look at the man. If he did, then he was sure he’d lose his cool.

“Really now? Are you sure that it was because of your ‘Skill’, that wild waving of that oversized stick?” The man then whispered in Akashis ear. “That was mearly you getting lucky against stupid creatures, who didn’t understand what your wild flailing was.”

Akashi had to shut his eyes, and clenched his teeth. “You don’t kno-”
“That had nothing to do with you being smart, or thinking ahead of your opponent. In fact, they were two steps ahead of you, just you were stupid and lucky enough to be missed. Your about as easy to corner as an eel. But by no means, is this due to any form of intelligence. No, it’s is mearly, pure, simple, dumb luck.”

Akashi balled up his fist, praying he could hold himself back. This was one of the things he hated most about this man; No matter what he did, he was never given any credit, it was always pinned down to him having stupid luck. “Then what do you call beating Ayase?” Akashi retorted sharply.

The man seemed to recoil ever so slightly, but it was just enough for Akashi to create shadows along the mans blade, and slip away from him, in several short leaps. The man made no move to give chase. Instead, he flipped his cloak to the side, sheathed his katana, and then wrapped the cloak around him again. “You defeated Ayase?” He asked, narrowing his eyes.

“I didn’t kill him, just dealt a large wound- that’ll probly become a scar at best- and defeated his Kori no Ha.” Akashi stated, almost triumphantly.

“How?”

“Here, I’ll show you!” Akashi called, drawing his sword, his face turning to a feral snarling smile. “Draw your sword, and lets begin!”

The man simply smirked. “I need no blade for you. Come at me, as you wish. Hell, go for a killing blow if you want.” He stood still, not even shifting his cloak.

That pushed Akashi over the limit. “You overconfident bastard!” He roared, as he went and brought his sword in an overhead arc. The man simply stood there, as suddenly, something pitch black lashed out and actually wrapped around Akashis blade. It then wrenched the blade the the side, and tossed it aside, to have it stick into the sand. Slowly, the man's shadow emerged from the ground, to become like a mannequin, with nothing below its chest, except to taper down to his shadow, still attached to the bottom of his feet.

“You have no idea, the Capabilities of the Shadow Element.” The man said, and without even moving his eyes, the shadow puppet punched Akashi the other way that it threw his blade, only to have one arm form into a tentacle, wrap around Akashi, and pull him back, by his ankle, to punch him back into the ground. It then picked him up, still holding him, spun him, and slammed him sideways into a sand dune. “You have no idea, the strength others have, that would dwarf you.” The puppet pulled him out, slammed him into the ground again, flung him up, let go, and punched him back into the sand dune, before punching him several more times. “Nor, do you know how the outside world is cruel, and unforgiving. I was sheltering you from the hardships of this cruel land, and what do you do? You go and completely-!”

Just then, Shadow needles erupted out from under the shadow puppets fist, branching randomly, stabbing through most of its limbs, several times, to bind it in place.

“You know, that really hurt. A lot.” Akashi said, getting up, brushing off any sand he could from him. “And you know what? Sand is really irritating.” Akashi held his hand out in the direction of his sword. Suddenly, the shadow of the sword, grabbed the handle, pulled the blade out of the ground, and tossed it to Akashi, who caught it perfectly, and went to slash the shadow puppet, but it dispersed suddenly. Akashi then released the shadow needles as well.

“Impressive. You’ve discovered the physical aspect of the Shadow element.” The man said, still standing still. “Please don’t tell me you expect me to be honestly impressed though.”

Akashi flared up again, and he lunged at the man again, though this time, with a more strategic approach, not just going for brute strength. However, the man simply continued to dodge, backing up to keep a good distance between the two of them. “I’ll show you, you bastard! I’ll show you I’m not some weakling!”

Just then, the man caught Akashis blade between two of his fingers, wrenched the blade, and threw Akashi again. The man pushed his robe behind him, to stay over his back, revealing the Katanas, in their pitch black sheaths. “Do you honestly believe to best me, as you are now? If so, I’ll crush that hope, right here, right now.” The man said, reaching to unsheathe both of his blades, drawing them in an X fashion. He just stood there, his swords drawn. “Here, you want a duel? FIne, I’ll duel you, If we make it a bet; If you win, I’ll allow you to continue your pointless venture. However, If I win, you will return to the Capital, and cause no more trouble. I swear to my end of the bargain, In the Name of the Deity of Blood, Keeper of Oaths. What about you?” The man spoke.

“I swear...” Akashi said, standing up, now a little unsteady, before he raised his sword, to bring it down in front of him, now In its Shiminuki form. The mans Eyes widened at the sudden expansion, in first shock, then narrowed in confusion. “TO DEFEAT YOU!!!” Akashi yelled, as he swung his blade down at the man, who brought up a blade to block it, and when they clashed, it didn’t cause the metallic clang. Instead, it resonated an ominously quiet echoing “Tick” that was barely perceptible to Human ears. The man brought it up, not putting much strength into it. His mistake. His arm gave way under the strength of Akashis strike, fast approached the mans shoulder, and made contact with the Kimono, to-

Stop?

Sure enough, Akashi stood there, his Shiminuki, stopped on the mans shoulder, by a simple black Kimono. ‘What...?’ Akashi was bewildered. How could clothing stop his Shiminuki? That shouldn’t be possible, should it? Just then, the man placed a foot in Akashis stomach, and shoved him back, with quite a bit of force.

“So, you’ve learned of the manipulability of shadows as well. That’s some progress, I admit.” The man remarked, only straightening where his Kimono had been rumpled. “Again, If you hope to beat me, you’re gonna have to do better than that.”

Akashi could not stand this man. How could he be so arrogant? ‘I’ll show him, there’s no way I’m gonna let him win here, not now!’ Akashi stood up, and in one motion, generated a sphere of black energy, and as fast as he could, threw it straight at the man. It went so fast, the man barely had time to respond, before it connected, and exploded, creating a dust cloud where it detonated, enveloping the man. “HA! Suck it, Bastard!” Akashi cried triumphantly-

Until the tip of the Katana touched the back of his neck. “Suck what? The clean air over here?” The man stood, pressing the tip of his blade right at Akashis spine in his neck. “Cause surely, that was not some honestly believed victory cry, was it?”

Akashi couldn’t believe it. How had he gotten behind him? How did he move so fast, in sand, without any noticeable fashion. It shouldn’t have been possible.

“I must say, learning of the Explosive power is a remarkable feat, but not one deserving of someone who learned it probably by pure chance or luck.” The man said, standing perfectly calm. “And judging from your reaction, its apparent you don’t know of the jumping capability that Shadows can perform.” The man claimed.

‘Jumping capability? Did he just jump over me? No, to jump that high, and land, without making any noise, it’s nearly impossible, even in sand. And to do it that fast, definitely not. Then what!?’ Akashis mind was awhirl with confusion.

“I Win, Akashi. If i wished it, you wouldn’t be able to do a thing, to keep me from killing you.” The man proclaimed, victoriously.

Akashi felt a pulse from deep within him. ‘Not so long as I can help it!’ A deep voice resonated from the depths of his being..

As I Said, Please feel free to make comments in this Thread, provide feedback, and that sort of thing.

Chapter 4: Secret Friend

Just as Akashi felt the pulse, so too, did the man, who very quickly retreated, as Akashi hung his arms limp. He was exuding an unnatural amount of dark energy, giving him a dark aura. “No, it can’t be... no...” the man spoke, shocked, and confused.

Akashi turned to the man, and there was definitely something wrong. The whites of his eyes had turned black, and the red of his eyes seemed to be glowing. “It’s good to see you again, Amagawa. Been what- 20-some odd years?- Since I’ve seen that Ugly, mortal mug of yours.” Akashis mouth spoke, but it really sounded as if another being, with a much deeper voice was speaking at the exact same moment, saying the exact same thing as Akashi. “Why the sour face? Don’t you want to reminisce of the old times, your pitiful mortal contraptions, meant to kill me, drive me away, instill fear into my soul. All, to only settle on trapping me in a cage.” Akashis body motioned to himself, and looked at it. “This mortal cage is so pitiful, It can’t even comprehend my pushes, or my guidings, let alone resist them. Unfortunately, as such, The most I have ever been capable of doing until now, was observe, and prod. I must thank you, for this liberty, to converse with you again.”

“Can’t say the feeling’s mutual, Shingaku.” Amagawa replied coldly. “If it were fun to chat with you at any length, then you wouldn’t have been sealed.”

“Ah, But you see, I was, Just not in your point of view.” This voice, now apparently known as Shingaku, spoke. “I’m very fun to chat with. If i were one for chatting.” Shingaku said, lunging at Amagawa, before striking a flurry of blows, wielding the huge sword as if it were a tooth pick. Despite being a decent swordsman, Amagawa got caught off guard by the sudden barrage, and had to continually retreat, as Shingaku commanded Akashis body forward. “Come on, Amagawa, you are better than this, I know it!” Shingaku taunted, continuing his barrage, before striking both of Amagawas blades upward, and pointing his palm at Amagawa. “BOOM!” A sphere of shadow energy appeared, and launched, to explode against Amagawas chest at point blank range. However, the shockwave sent both of them flying. Though shingaku slammed the Shiminuki into the ground, to slow his slide, whereas Amagawa bounced a couple times, before doing the same. Where the explosion had occurred, there was a crater cut out from the flat of sand, and slowly filling back in, a little.

“Come on, Amagawa!” Shingaku goaded, with a vicious smile. “Don’t tell me that just by taking over, I can make a body like this better than your swordsmanshi-” Just then, Shingaku got a knee to the stomach, lifting him off the ground, before slamming his hand, fingers acting like they were holding a ball, so the fingers jabbed into his stomach, down to the ground.

“Begone, To the Pits, Foul Spirit!” Amagawa commanded.

Shingaku smiled, a vengeful Smile. “I see, you were toying with me, to lower my guard... You sly bastard. YOU, are the eel, not this prison, and he’ll prove it to you one day.” Shingaku declared, before Akashis body passed out.

Amagawa slowly stood up. He then started to make camp, with Akashis supplies.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Akashi slowly came too, to see a black night, only broken by the many stars of the night. He heard the crackling of a fire, and felt the cushion of his bed roll, as opposed to the silence of the night, and coarse sand. He then remembered the man. He instantly rolled over, to stand up, and drew his sword- and held nothing. His sword wasn’t at his side. He looked to the fire, to see Amagawa, prepping some meal- looked like either a soup, or stew- and wasn’t even looking at Akashi. Infact, even had his back to him.

“Morning. Or rather, it’s night, but you know what I mean.” The man said, never moving his gaze from the fire. “Food will be ready soon, and I advise against any hostilities. It’s a wonder you stood that quickly without-” There was a thump and grunt of Pain, as Akashi collapsed, holding his gut. “Without collapsing.” The man finished. “Try and roll over onto that mat, unless you’re too weak to even do that.”

Akashis anger flared, but he did just that, painfully rolling over, back onto the mat. “What happened? Last thing I remember was you threatening to kill me.” He gasped out, through gritted teeth.

“That is a tale for later. For now, you are to rest, eat, and regain your strength.” Amagawa dodged, before pouring some of the stew into a bowl, and setting it to cool a little. Akashi struggled to sit up, and grabbed his bowl, after it was filled, and began to eat, once it had cooled down. It had a bland flavor, with only tiny amounts of spice having been used, but the meat had been cooked perfectly, and in a way, that made it very good. “Tell me, what do you remember before you blacked out?” Amagawa moved over to the other side of the fire, so as to be able to look at Akashi.

Akashi took another bite, before answering. “Well, you threatened me, and then, I felt... a surge, and heard some voice. Next thing I know, i’m waking up on my bedroll.”

Amagawa nodded, thoughtfully. “Do remember what the voice said?”
“No, but if I remember right, it was deep, and commanding.”

Amagawa looked down to the fire. “... Must have been your Imagination. You probly just passed out from the amount of over exertion you’ve done these past couple days.” Amagawa dismissively waved his hand. He then stood up. “If you were smart, you’d return back home, and never attempt this again. But you aren’t, so I don’t expect much.” He then sank into his own shadow. “Good bye, Akashi. Just make sure that your actions, are really your own.”
Akashi tried to get up to stop him, but he was already gone. “Wait! Damnit.” Akashi sat back down, thinking. ‘He had more than enough strength to take me down, and drag me back... If so, why didn’t he?’

‘My actions, my own...?’

Chapter 5: Finally, Some Rest

Akashi cleaned up the things that Amagawa had used last night. Akashi was still pondering everything that had been said, looking for any hints that he had put in his words, hidden in the lines. In fact, Akashi had gotten barely any sleep, but his sleep was good, and it refreshed him some. He knew he wasn’t at full strength, but he figured he’d at least be able to get himself to the next town, and that would be enough for him.

‘Maybe once I hit the city, I can rent a room at an inn, and get some decent sleep.’ Akashi slung his backpack back on, and resumed on his course. He had to check his compass, before he headed out, but once he was sure he was facing the right way, put it away again. As he continued, the blaring sun beating down on him, he began to sweat under his clothes, but still, he trudged forward, not so much as grunting. As he crested a dune, he nearly sighed in pure relief, but didn’t, because he feared collapsing if he relaxed yet. Off in the distance, was what he sought; the Town of Zennou. He could finally rest… Once he got there at least.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

After another couple hours of seemingly endless trudging, Akashi finally arrived in the City of Zennou. Akashi could feel the temperature difference from the blistering heat of the desert, to the calm, and gentle breeze of the plains. He had been told it was far cooler out of the desert, but he hadn’t thought it’d be this different. ‘I think I’ll get a cloak, that should help.’ Akashi thought, as he sought an inn. After asking for the cheapest inn, He was given directions to a tavern, but warned it was known for hooligans. Akashi thanked the man for this information, and proceeded to the Inn.

As he approached, he saw a sign hanging from a pole over the doorway, swaying lightly in the breeze. It had a picture of a rather rounded women, with a overly exaggerated angry face, apparently waving her arms around, with the words ‘The Furious Wife Tavern’ written around the picture. ‘Bet I can guess what type of person owns this place.’ Akashi thought, as he walked into the tavern, to-

Suddenly a person flew right across in front of the entrance, to the point that Akashi felt the wind of the mans passage. it was an uproar of boisterous laughter, loud music, and roars of anger. Akashi carefully waded his way through the seeming brawl that was probably the norm of this place. He slowly made his way to the counter, to see the back of a not too slim woman, cleaning something. “Excuse me, I’d like to rent a room for the night.” He said loud enough to be heard, but not enough to seem like he was ordering her.

The woman set the object down, before turning around, giving him this slightly irritated look. “You’re gonna wanna talk ta da owner, boy.” She said, with a slight accent.

Akashi was a little confused. “I Beg your pardon, but aren’t you-”

“Nah, I ain’t, damnit. Just cuz there’s a fat angry lady on the picture don’t mean a fat angry lady owns da place. Now, ya want me to go get ya the owner, or you gonna keep pressing that you think Im a fat angry lady?” She retorted. Akashi just nodded, not trusting his tongue at the moment. The woman walked off, and Akashi turned to look at the mayhem of the tavern once more. He saw men feeling up just about every pretty girl that came near, and heck, some were so drunk, they fell out of their seats from the subsequent slap. He saw the barmaids slapping so often, he wondered how they kept their hands from hurting. Probly from repeated use, he figured. There were some men, off in a corner gambling, some were passed out happily drunk dreaming, some a red cheek. Others were arm wrestling, or just out right brawling, each wobbling with uncertain footing, and dodging blows more from their random wobbles, than from actual agility. Another strange thought passed through his head, before vanishing. ‘I could slaughter all of these people, easily.’ He again shook his head, to rid himself of the thought.

Just then, someone tapped his shoulder, and fairly heavily too. He turned back to the corner, to see a tall, rather burly human, his sleeves rolled up, and with average length hair, looking rather unkempt. “So, you the one wanting to talk to the owner?” The man asked, as if he’d practiced it so much, he found it boring.

“Yes, I was. Are you the owner?” Akashi asked, politely. The man simply nodded. “Alright, I’d like to rent a room for the night, and maybe tomorrow night too, but i’ll come back if I decide to. so, any chance I could haggle your average price down? I’d like to conserve as much coin as I can, cause I don’t know when I’ll get more.”

“15 pieces.” The man replied.

“Could I persuade you to lower it to ten, possibly?”Akashi asked.

“No, but now it’s 20.”

“What? You just said 15!”

“You really are new to this town, aren’t you?” Akashi nodded. “My tavern has a policy, Try to haggle, and it’ll go up by the amount you try to lower it.”

“That’s absurd. What if they honestly couldn’t pay the 15, and only could afford 10?”

“Then they don’t get to stay here.” The man shrugged, before his eye wandered to Akashis sword. “You a fighter?”

The sudden question confused Akashi. “Yeah, why?”

“Kill anything on your journey here through the desert?”

The fact the man knew he had come from the desert concerned him. “What makes you think I came from the desert?”

“The slight red tinge to your skin, the hard leather outfit, and the tight boots of a desert goer. Those are essential gear for crossing a desert on foot, but for not much else.” The man pointed out.

Akashi realized it was true. His skin was slightly red, probably would have been more so, if he weren’t used to it, and his clothes stood out quite a bit from the others in the bar. “Very well, yes, I have Come from Enudinai.”

“Oh, the heart huh? On your own? That is a very remarkable feat. For obvious reasons. Hence My question, did you kill anything on ur way?”

“I took down a Hammer-Lizard, and some desert-wolves; large pack, about 30 or so, and a Dune-wolf, as their Alpha.”

“A pack of 30 desert-wolves, and a Dune-wolf, on your own?” The man seemed doubting.

“No, not all of them, but a few of them, before i wounded the Dune-wolfs eye, and they went away.” Akashi clarified.

“Oh, I see. And you didn’t gather any proof of these claims from them?”

“No. Why should I?”

“Cause, word may not always be good enough. But you see, sometimes people like to get little trinkets from those that Kill monstrous creatures, such as a Hammer-Lizard, single handedly, in case they end up becoming someone big, so they can hang it up and say ‘Hey, I got this awesome prize from that awesome guy, I’ll sell it for 5 times as much as i payed him for it’.”

That made sense to Akashi. Trophies from prestigious people were in fact worth a lot. “I see. Very well, I’ll have to remember that. Thank you.”

“However, little thing, like goblins, of just normal wolves won’t get you barely anything, so don’t bother with those.” Akashi Nodded to this last little bit of Information. The Owner leaned back. “Seeing how you’re new, I’ll let that first haggle slide by. 15 pieces for a night.”

Akashi pulled out, and counted the pieces, dropping them into the owner's hand, when he had them counted. The owner pulled out a key, and handed it to Akashi. “Room 217. Its on the second floor.” Akashi nodded, and was just about to walk away when the owner grabbed his shoulder. “One last thing. Whatever you don’t, don’t piss off a Dragoon in this town. It won’t be fun for anyone.” The owner released him, and then proceeded back into the back. Akashi quietly headed upstairs, found his room, went in, after unlocking the door, locked it when he was inside, set his bag in a chair, before falling onto the bed, and almost instantly falling asleep, once he got into a comfortable spot. There, he slept from midday, till morning the next day.
