East Side Mental Hospital; for me, Hatred and Chibialtia

Christopher sat at the lunch table, alone. As usual. He had his arms crossed, and his legs crossed. He sighs and takes out his lunch bag and takes his lunch out. He looks around at the other patients. He didn't understand why he was sent here. If his parents actually cared, they'd talk with him before sending him here but all they did was call him a piece of scum, and then send him here. They didn't talk about his overdosing at all. He knew why he did it of course.

His parents didn't pay attention to him at all, they didn't care about him. He felt alone, isolated, just so ignored. He felt the world would be better off without him so he had overdosed many times. He didn't die though, and he was disappointed when he didn't. He looks around another time at the patients, thinking he doesn't belong, and then stares at his lunch and sighs.

East Side Mental Hospital. Seems like a dump. A really shitty excuse for "rehabilitation." I don't know what they want to rehabilitate. Yeah, sure, I made a few marks on my wrists. Or a lot. Doesn't matter. Anyways, it's not like they can change that. I still cut. Even after my parents caught me and decided to send me here, hoping I'd learn a thing or two about being 1) sane, and 2) a girl. Because apparently, girls aren't supposed to like other girls. Who would've thought.

And I'm going to keep cutting. It's hard to stop things like that, but hey, maybe one of these days I'll cut too deep and die before someone can get to me. Then I'll stop cutting.

Anyways, I think it'll be nice there, or, as nice as going to an insane asylum--woops, I mean mental hopsital--can be. It might be entertaining to see the REAL nuts talking to ghosts or themselves or telling me things I never wanted to know about how giraffes reproduce or the long and unabridged history of Ugandan warfare.

Still, it'll suck not being able to see Allysia. It's likely I'll never see her again. The rumors have probably already spread at school that I'm off to a nuthouse, and she'll probably think I'm crazy and never want to have anything to do with me ever again. She was one of the few people at my school who tolerated me. No, she wasn't gay, but at least she didn't think being gay was absolutely disgusting. I'd gotten so close to talking to her, so close. She was just so pretty, I just couldn't help but like her.

Oh well. I don't plan on living much longer anyway.

I just sat in the car, thinking about all those things, as my parents pulled into the loop out front of the place. They hadn't talked to me the whole way there, but now they said, "Get out."

I grabbed the bag that was next to me and pulled it close to my chest. "Jeez, love you too, guys," I said.

They just stared at me, waiting for me to just leave.

So I left. I stood there by the front door, my bag clutched to my chest, after they drove off. I just stood there, not sure whether I should just go in or if someone should come get me (which frankly seemed the more asylum-y thing
to do).

Out of all the students there, one seemed to be okay with everything. You can either say she seemed happy. It was Julia Angrono. She was sent to the East Side Mental Hospital by a friend. Julia saw ghosts. Others thought she was just crazy. Her parents were dead and her legal guardians barely gave two shits about her.

Today, Julia sat at a table by herself. That's what it would look like. She was eating a trey of food. She was smiling, laughing with someone who wasn't there, to other eyes. To her's , it was the ghost of a patient that went to the hospital. Julia and them had become friends.

Julia really liked the hospital. It was full of people. And especially ghosts. She was finally able to be with people who understood her.

Christopher looked over, as he saw the Julia girl. He'd heard many things about her, that she talked to ghosts and all. People that she was crazy, but ah well. He bet the Julia girl was just lonely, and he didn't blame her. He was too. He sighs and gets up, and then starts to walk out of the lunch room and was led by guards to his room he stayed in.

(I guess i'll be the person who gets your character Chibi)
A person who worked at the mental hospital saw Joanna, and then came out and brought her in.

"Nice place you've got here," I said as the big male nurse with hairy arms led me through the place, carrying my bag. ("Oh, how sweet of you to carry a woman's bag for her," I said when he offered to take it for me. He rolled his eyes.)

We passed through what seemed to be the cafeteria as we made our way to the dormitory, where I'd be put in my room and asked to make myself at home. I'd probably be here for the rest of my life, so I might as well make my room as comfortable as possible.

I smirked as I saw one of the things I hoped to see here: some little girl was sitting by herself at a table, but laughing and talking as if she were surrounded by friends. The rest of the cafeteria was silent aside from hushed whispers coming from a table of older looking men in the corner. Some other kid, who looked about the girl's age, was done with lunch apparently, and was escorted to the other side of the place from where I was being taken. Male and female dormitories were in separate wings, I guess. Nice to know.

We finally arrived, after what seemed like an endless route of twists and turns through the depressing corridors, at what was supposed to be my room. I didn't expect much, but it still was kind of disappointing. It was just a small room with an old bed, just a metal frame with a thin mattress thrown on top. There was a sink and mirror on the wall at the foot of the bed, but that was it, and the room was ridiculously cramped. The floor was carpeted, but it was a really ugly color of brown that reminded me of puke. Maybe the carpet was just stained that color by puke.

And there were handcuffs chained to the bed.

"Do those have to be there?" I said, sounding like I cared more than I intended to. Those handcuffs just bothered me, that's all.

The nurse nodded. "You'd have to talk to one of the doctors about it."

I sighed as he threw my bag on the bed. I hoped, and I can't believe I ever thought this, but I hoped that I'd be able to talk to a doctor about it soon. They bothered me, that's all.

"You eaten?" he asked. I looked up at the clock on the wall. It was about lunchtime. I shook my head. "Best get to the cafeteria, then, before lunch is over."

An excuse to leave this room with the handcuffs and this big, smelly guy?

Hell yes.

I walked out of there before he could say anything else. I retraced my steps back to the cafeteria and got my food (who would have thought it possible, but I think it was actually more repulsive than the food at school. Yuck.). I wasn't sure exactly where to sit. People were still sitting around at most of the tables, and the emptiest one was the one with the girl who talked to herself.

So I sat at the seat furthest from her, and started poking my food and trying to gather the courage to take a bite. I tried not to look up every time she laughed at an unheard joke.

Julia looked over at the new girl that had come. She looked at the table she sat at. It was only her and her dead friend. Why didn't she sit with them? The ghost said another joke and Julia laughed again. She seen the new girl glance at her. She decided to be nice and wave. After not getting a response, Julia threw her tray away and started to leave. "Come on." She said, holding her hand out to the air. "Time to go."

She folded her hand as if holding another person's and started to leave. She headed out to the other side of the hospital. It was much like a high school gym. It had a rack of sports balls, monkey bars, and other things. There were no windows. Julia let go of the imaginary hand and picked up a dodge ball. "Catch!" She said, throwing it to a wall. The ball returned after hitting the wall. She threw it again and again, playing catch with her friend.

Chris looks around his room, being left alone now. The guards seemed to trust him enough to let him stay alone in his dorm room. He sighs and plops on the bed, cracking his knuckles. He had no friends here. He knew a new girl here came and he just shrugs. He knew it was pointless to make friends with her, but he could always try. Feeling motivated for once, he gets up and opens the door.

He starts to walk towards the lunch room with the guard, and then sees the new girl. He walks over to her and sits next to her, and waves shyly.

I tried my best to look like I didn't care when the girl left, hand-in-hand with someone who wasn't there. I took a look around after she left, though. A lot of those older guys in the corner were looking at me, and I felt that their whispers were probably about me now.

Not long after the girl left, though, the boy I saw earlier who was done with lunch came back and sat next to me.

Now, the only REAL reason I was ignoring the girl was because maybe if I pretended she wasn't there, she'd stop talking to her imaginary friend. That obviously didn't work, and I had no clue what this kid's problem was, so I didn't bother ignoring him.

"Hey," I said, looking away from him after he waved and going back to poking the weird stuff on my tray. "Food always this bad?"

Julia continued to play catch. She soon finished and left back to the cafeteria to get something to drink. She held hands with her ghost friend again and started to skip back to the cafeteria. She stopped in the hall and looked at the wall. "What's wrong?" She asked, looking at it. "Why are you crying?" She was now talking to another ghost. She let go of the one she was with and went to the wall and sat down, looking to the side. "What's wrong?" She asked it. "...Where was the last place you saw your sister?"

She sat there talking while kids and nurses walked by, whispering about her. "Well, come with me." She said, standing. "Me and May will help you find your sister." Julie pointed to the ghost she was with, who was as said, May. She held hands with the new ghost and started back for the cafeteria.

Once there. She ordered a cup of water from the line and returned to her same table. She continued to talk to her new friend.

He chuckles. ''Sometimes, yeah,'' he says ''Actually, yeah. Most the time it's really bad, so I make my own lunch and bring it here when it's lunch time. So you're new here, right? Tell me about yourself,'' he mumbles, looking at her. He didn't know much about her, but she seemed nice. He sighs and puts a hand on his cheek.

I noticed that the girl came back, but the boy didn't seem to take notice of her either, which made me feel a bit less original, but whatever. I also noticed that this guy likes to talk.

"Bipolar disorder, with a touch of cyclothymia," I said, "that is, assuming you're asking for my diagnosis." This place is only for housing and attempting (and failing quite spectacularly) to rehabilitate people like us who're fucked up, so I don't understand why we should bother with anything else. I didn't say that, though, mainly because he's a kid. Yeah, a kid, but if he's here, I'm not sure it means much. Anyways, I try not to be too bad to him.

I can't help but look at the girl every now and then. Either her imaginary friend is extremely bipolar, or she's got a new one with her, because she seems to be comforting whoever it is she's talking to. But there's apparently another hallucination with her, someone she keeps calling May. I'd ask the boy about her, but she's right there, and that would be pretty rude, even by my standards.

He notices the girl talking to the ghosts, but ignores it. He doesn't say anything.
''I didn't mean your diagnosis, but, uh okay,'' he says and sighs. ''I've got to go now, but, if you ever wanna talk just, try to find me.'' He gets up and starts to walk towards his dorm.

Huh. Too blunt? Whatever it was, I think I just scared off the first prospect of making any friends here. Still, I said "Okay" and waved him goodbye. I feel like a bitch, though. Probably am. I make a note to add one more to the number of cuts I plan to give myself next time I get a chance.

So, it's just me and the girl now. Or, rather, me, the girl, and what I'm pretty sure are two imaginary friends. Maybe I was too harsh on her, too, so I decide to say something. "Hey, there," I say, and then I remember NOT to ask about her diagnosis, NOT to ask her about who she's talking to, NOT to be an asshole to her, "what's your name?"

Julia looked over at the new girl. She smiled and waved back. "Hi." She said, cheerfully. "Oh, can you excuse me for a second." She told the new ghost she met. "May, can you keep him company? Thanks." Julia then returned her attention to the new kid. "My name is Julia." She answered.

Julia then turned back to the ghosts. "Can you please wait?" She asked. "I promise I'll come back to you." She told them. "What's your name?" She asked the new girl.

Okay, so I can't deny the fact that it's really weird every time she turns her head and says something to someone who's not there, but I'm still trying not to be an utter bitch to her so I won't have to add another cut to my list. "My name's Joanna," I say. "It's nice to meet you, Julia."

It's really hard to not mention it, so I ask, as politely as possible, "Who're you talking to?"
