I Rescued a Dog; And he might be staying...

I still can't use this.

A funny thing happened on the way to NeoGAF yesterday.

I let this little beast outside on the line because he, his name being Cesar, has a very strange affinity for a dog of just liking to be outside without any meaningful interaction with the family. Within an hour he began barking, but not his normal "stay off my lawn" old man bark he shouts to the squirrels, rather his "I'm going to rip your feet off and feed them to you" death bark he gives to dogs. Even worse was that the barking was getting farther away from my ears. I run out and notice this foot-high terrier has torn the metal stake out of the ground and is now face-to-face with something in the bushes much bigger than him.

But thank god this thing isn't attacking. Rather, it's cowering and heading down towards another yard behind my house. Once Cesar had him cornered against my fence and the neighbor's, I grabbed him amid obscenities and rushed him back inside. I was prepared to sit down and leave it at that, but something compelled me to check on what it really was that had my dog so hot. It was a puppy!

A brindle pitbull puppy! A collar but no tags. I begin thinking he lived with this neighbor since he was adamant on staying there; dogs hunker down at home when they get terrified. But nothing in this yard indicated such- no toys, no bowls, no housing, no poop, a huge hole in the fence where he was able to cross into my yard, and no prior interactions with Cesar. Plus, his ears were full of ticks and he was a bit thin. Even if he did live there, I figured the owner didn't deserve him.

I muzzled him with a leash, hooked another to his collar, and spent considerable time dragging him back to my house despite ants and small hornets. His ability to anchor himself was amazing, but nonetheless I got him under the big umbrella of my porch where he was treated to bologna, ham, cheese, kibble, and bottled water. I called for Animal Control but was told that since only one officer works per county on weekends, it wouldn't be until tomorrow that he could be picked up.

I then called my mom who, like all moms, was horrified I had approached such an unpredictable beast, one that could infect our own vaccinated dog with anything and everything under the sun, even diseases not common in Georgia (we don't have lyme disease down here). She also warned my dad would also be hot that I had roped a strange dog, but he surprised me: he said "I've fallen in love with dogs," had been tending to him with me, agreed that the prior owners were irresponsible, and did what my mom supposed I would do: He got attached real quick. Goddammit.

He made the pup a little makeshift bed outside, but this morning at 6 I woke up to the loudest damn barks I'd ever heard from Cesar. It was storming; the little guy was terrified and trying to get away, having dragged some heavy metal chairs into the yard. I grabbed him, put him in the garage to warm and dry, and cleaned up the water. Mom did not want this tick-infested thing in her house. I'm supposing Dad took the fall for me on that one this morning; she didn't even ask what I had done.

But alas, Animal Control has just taken our little tenant away. Dad asked the officer how to keep track of the pup's progress. If he's not claimed in five days, he becomes property of the shelter, meaning he will be put up for adoption to the community. Dad nodded and said, "I may keep him; I just feel so sorry for him." I'm thinking that will be the battle of the century, with my stubborn mom being both certain we will never own two dogs much less an evil pitbull. And my dad's already in the doghouse himself for certain plans that fell through. There's no way we're going to get this thing, right?

Well, the officer's phone number is sitting on the counter.

Wow, that's just amazing...and the pitbull is just adorable!! That was a very great deed of you, though to rescue the pup. I usually don't give animals to the humane society because I know how the humane society is...not getting into much detail. I hope it's just from where I live...

Good on you Bliz, I'm sure there's probably an owner out there who would be dogless without your kind intervention.

Was the dog just literally cowering and not giving any fight at all? xP

Yep. He saw Cesar and paused, then walked to the fence corner with his tail tucked. I think the shock of the encounter made him feel safer to hunker down, because I was going back and forth in my house looking for things and deciding what to do or who to call, and he never moved away from the fence whenever I left. When I muzzled and leashed him, no fight at all sans laying down to avoid being dragged. He's just a puppy who got lost and was scared. :3

Although, even if we don't keep him, I'm confident someone else will take him. He's amazingly respectful of people. Despite his fear, he would still gently take food from our hands, and he took to the bed like a natural. Otherwise, he was just quiet and chilling out. He didn't even make a peep when he got caught in the storm. Awesome little dog; I figure there's no way the shelter won't push for such a dog to get adopted. He was already owned by someone before, after all.

Sounds like just about every cat I've ever owned. The majority of them have been strays that just showed up one night and eventually decided to call our place home. This little guy reminds me of Chip in particular: thin little raggity thing when he showed up who sheepishly took a few pieces of kibble from under the house when we found him. When he got a bit more healthy was when he decided he'd get pushy and have some attitude problems. He's mellowed out a whole lot now though. One of the most affectionate animals I've ever known too, almost too much of a suck-up. |D;

Anyway, glad to hear this lil' guy turned out okay, he's adorable! I almost want to adopt him myself. >w<

What is the difference between a duck?

Aww that's a nice thing you did and no matter what happens I'm sure he'll be going to a better place than wherever he came from.

Also I don't like the misconception a lot of people have about pitbulls being bad, sure they were bred for certain things but ultimately a dogs tendencies seem to be reflective of their owner and what they're forced to do.. I've seen plenty of nice pitbulls and I think they're nice dogs, even if they tend to be more aggressive than most sometimes (not in this case obviously) but they're good pups, the fact that some places actually have straight out bans on them is borderline insane.

Aw! That's nice.
Even though their illegal here in Norway, I wouldn't exactly pin it down upon the dog's fault. Namely the owner.
And he he! You already own a dog, I'm sure it's in good hands under your care. ^_^

No matter if it used to have an owner. It shouldn't have let it off without a collar, with a name, and number. It's basically stray without one, and thus I find nothing wrong with it finding a new home with Bliz. He he! Nice found, and now Caesar have found a new friend for life. Given enough time to get used to the new fella...

Oh on the contrary, if you do end up keeping it. You've thought of any name for it?

I agree. Pit bulls have an unnecessarily bad rap, and I can only put the blame on media outlets running significantly more stories about attacking pit bulls versus other breeds, even ones on record for biting more. They aren't inherently more aggressive towards humans than any other dog (which makes sense if you consider them bred for fighting; how would the owners be able to stage fights and not get ripped apart themselves?), they don't have lock jaw, and they're not even the strongest dogs out there in body muscle or bite strength; that would be the rottweiler. Well-bred pit bulls like the little guy I had are awesome. I would actually be far more afraid to approach a stray cat under the same circumstances I did this dog.

Puppy! Me want. :c

Thanks for sharing this awesome little story with us Bliz. Its great to know that we have a bunch of animal lovers here on SB. That little pit certainly is gorgeous. It angers me how people just won't give em a chance and how they fear them for idiotic reasons. Also, your story really reminded me of my family. Me and Dad tending to a poor stray, considering to keep him/her, but Mom would never give in. If she did, Id probably have four dogs right now. x3
