Posts: 3,112 Group: E Rank Legend Member #59 Joined: April 29, 2006	Considering we're talking about the other three being robots, is it not surprising that the fat man possibly went through a few prototype hedgehog robots to match Sonic in speed and ability? Silver Sonic was Eggman's first attempt to make a Sonic robot. This robot was destroyed and probably not salvageable after crashing back to Earth in Sonic 2. Mecha Sonic was a welcome upgrade, being able to harness the power of the Master Emerald. But I imagine it was built for only that reason (Aside from beating Sonic). Considering Knuckles is the M.E. guardian, I imagine it would be hard to even get his robot super'd. Not to mention Mecha was destroyed somewhere around Angel Island, probably not salvageable again. So, really I think SEGA had reason not to revive either of them. I think Metal has probably been the most favorite robot Sonic so they just stuck with it. In the OVA, Metal is considered to be Sonic's doppleganger and is actually created by copying Sonic's personality and abilities. Maybe they just got tired of making Sonic robots and decided Metal was the best one so far. And I mean, maybe Eggman perfected the best robot Sonic when it came to Metal. Maybe Metal is able to withstand the beatings Sonic dishes out so Eggman spend less time trying to scrounge the materials for MS and more time upgrading and modifying him. This wouldn't be the first time there's been a series of robots. Take into consideration the E-100s, who have about 8 different types (that we know of). We have the generation that Gamma comes from, the generation that comes from Battle (Phis), and Omegas generation. Eggman went through many different E-100s in an attempt to make the perfect robot.

Although I would like to add that in the Sonic OVA, it was a character that looked like Metal Sonic, but was called (Hyper?) Mecha Sonic. In terms of storyline, Silver Sonic was too simple and didn't match Sonic. He may have been more deadly, but he was dead dumb. Mecha Sonic was fast and complex, but he was only made for battle and was a bit larger than Sonic. He required extra equipment and size to maintain functionality similar to Sonic's. Metal Sonic was the most useful iteration because he finally was technologically advanced enough to have Sonic's size AND speed, along with similar intellect. Metal Sonic is slightly disadvantaged because he doesn't quit have the fighting capability, but he's smarter. (Metal and Mecha Sonic didn't know how to use the environment to their advantage. Note how you fought them in simple square-box areas instead of a complicated raceway. Metal Sonic doesn't use any 'spinning' until Adventure, where Silver Sonic makes a cameo in Eggman's base. That's why I say Metal Sonic isn't quite made for battle, but instead for a variety of situations; but he can use his abilities to his advantage instead of having built-in weapons.)

As far as I'm concerned they're all just variants of a Metal Sonic and just names awarded to them by fanbois who believe Shadow is in love with Rouge(Antony The Bat, anyone?). The only derivative that even comes close is Metallix, and even that's not official as far as I'm aware. Also an honourable mention to Hyper METAL Sonic, from the OVA. Rant much, why yes. But it pisses me off. They're all Metal Sonics.
