What happened to tv?

I was going to blog post this, but I think a discussion of tv in general with anyone willing to take a look at this thread might be better. I'm kinda bad at this so expect walls of texts.

So, to start off with, I'm not a big TV junkie like I used to be. I used to watch a lot of cartoons and anime in my heyday, then I began to branch out to other networks such as VH1, TLC, Discovery, History Channel, Animal Planet, TruTV (I forgot its original name) and related networks. I used to watch a wide variety of interesting programs, ranging from discussions on rare diseases to research related to various religions and even to discussions on pop culture/entertainment.

It was probably VH1 which was the first network I stopped watching. I was never a big pop culture fangirl after I quit listening to rap and pop, but VH1 was able to entertain and insight with its shows regarding the luxurious lifestyles of certain celebrities and how people who are famous today got to where they were, or even discussions on trends throughtout the 70s, 80s, and 90s. Soon, they began to air shows such as Flavor of Love and their top 100s lists began to change their tone from the humorous to something more common on the internet. (Think of an overcritical, perhaps trollish nature?)

It wasn't just VH1 that I found changing, but practically every other network I used to watch seems to have followed suit, having little to nothing noteworthy of watching anymore.

More recently, like a couple Tuesdays ago, my grandmother and aunt love shows I consider... awful... Things like Dancing with the Stars, Survivor, Amazing Race, etc. I admit I watched the first season of Survivor and Amazing Race, (none of the dancing and talent garbage though) they were somewhat enjoyable in the first seasons (Race more so than Survivor), but it became old very fast and I quit watching. It seems like the only thing television has to offer now-a-days is reality show after reality show after reality show.

Not to make it out that all reality shows are the bane of evil and must be purged with fire, but there is such an oversaturation of the stuff that there is scarcely anything I can stand watching. The channels I used to watch are mere shells of their former selfs and they show content that seems to contrast the networks original purpose. Every network suddenly has a Pawn/Auction show, every network seems to have that Woman who only knows how to pop out babies. There is nothing different from the History channel to say, Lifetime, or TruTV, to Animal Planet. They're all suddenly just one big pool of reality tv. It just makes me think to the people who find a decline in anime and that moe is killing the genre.

I see the difference in network broadcasting not just in that content, but in other genres as well. Maybe it's an ignorant eye on my part, but I recall my mother once telling me to watch "Raising Hope" because it was a good comedy. After my aunt had watched Glee (mind you I am more interested in my laptop screen), it just so happened that Raising Hope was on. It seemed like a massive mess to me... I understand it's supposed to be a comedy, but the story couldn't focus for less than 5 minutes without pulling more ludicrous dialogue and cut scenes for "humor value."

That Tuesday was simply a day where I just felt so out of place with everything on TV. Like I was out of my own element... Am I really that distant from the trends in television, or did TV truly just decline? I mean, how can people watch any of this stuff they put on TV? Is reality tv the moe of regular tv (Its cheap to churn out and as long as there's profit, you keep chugging along)?

So, what are you thoughts on television?

I think television sucks today.
I miss the old Sci-Fi channel and Cartoon Network.
Most of what's on anymore is some kind of reality show like that Pawn Stars and the ones with hillbilly's selling motorcycles and bitching at each other over nothing.

I like how Disney Channel no longer has any of the old Mickey Mouse logo's.

The only good pieces of television are on DVD/Blu-ray and what really blows is there's no variety.
What I mean let's say on the Acme Hour there was a Bugs Bunny short, then there's one with no such Looney Tune cast and finishing with a Foghorn Leghorn one.
I can't do that anymore.
It's all themed out on collections anymore.
Not to mention I can't see anything MGM besides Droopy Dog and Tom & Jerry.

[insert something cheerful here]

I watch Young Justice, Legend of Korra and some occasional reruns of Teen Titans, CSI: Crime Scene Investigation and when in the mood, Friends.

That's about it for me.

I object to your claims
I actually like Dancing With The Stars and Amazing Race.=/

I actually think TV is getting a little better though. Yeah, a lot of the shows today do suck, but I think things were worse a few years ago.

Normally, I watch crime dramas; NCIS, the occasional CSI, Rizzolli and Isles, Psych now and then, a few reruns of Monk, the list goes on. I'm also kind of a fan of sitcoms Friends and Reba, though both those shows ended their respective runs a few years ago. Ah well. And oh god, Fraiser. Almost forgot that one. :P

So, most of the stuff on USA I can at the very least stomach and I'll watch some shows from other channels.

As long as it's not on MTV though. That channel needs to purged from the depths of television.

Cartoons....eh....like I mentioned with live action shows, I think things were worse a few years ago, but there are only a few shows that I really enjoy today. It almost makes me miss the nineties.

Though, it's not like the 80s and 90s were perfect, however. I mean, I love (note that I said 'love' and not loved the cartoons Disney create during that period but good god if I wasn't a fan of much of the stuff Cartoon Network had at the time.=/

The only things I watch/keep up with is Victorious and Degrassi. I really don't watch TV that much. I only watch Nickeloden and I'll admit some TV shows on that channel aren't that good, but it's better than any Disney or Cartoon Network in my opinion.

But yeah i'll admit that TV is starting to go down, it's really I don't ever think, gonna be the same as it ever was before. But there's really nothing to do about it. I just choose to ignore all other channels and only watch the TV Programs I like.

We all make choices. But in the end, our choices make us
Ill admit its gotten better for some channels but others have just gotten much much worse.

The other day I saw a promo for a new show on TruTV and it was about....a hotdog stand? Really? A "reality show" about some women working at a hotdog stand? That's nuff said right there. :I

I wondered about this myself awhile back. I flipped on Cartoon Network for my nephew. I used to enjoy CN quite a bit. I mean, Ed Edd N' Eddy, Courage the cowardly dog, all that good stuff. Then I see stuff like "Adventure Time" and "Chowder" and things like that. I'm not saying there's anything WRONG with those shows, but it doesn't seem like cartoons are what they used to be, at all. I used to watch all of the classics during the day, then watch anime on Adult Swim at night. As for regular shows, I've never been into them. Though, I can't ever find a decent thing to watch when I am bored without a computer.
