Everybody likes handheld games. Right...? Anyway, a lot of people like handheld games. But when one ponders of "the greatest game of all time," if he or she is a (at least somewhat) typical gamer, he or she may conceptualize some great home console-based undertaking with any one of a variety of adventurous gameplay formats, novel-esque storytelling, memorable characters that ultimately become the role models of children everywhere, movie-like graphics, level and world design to captivate the player for hours on end, flawless difficulty curves, and the implementation of all this within the realm of an expansive 3D universe. ... But let's go back to sprites and the limited amount of text you can fit onto a GameBoy Color screen. Or, if it suits your fancy, we can take a look at the latest era of handheld gaming--an era that challenges the capacity of the home console systems of old. For you, =SB= members, what is the greatest handheld game(s) of all time? While we're at it, you could even mention what you think is the greatest handheld gaming system. I have to say, personally, I'm a huge fan of Sonic Rush and the main entry Pokemon games (primarily Black/White and Ruby/Sapphire)... Although, admittedly, I haven't played as many quality handheld games as I would have liked. I've really missed out on handheld incarnations of established home console series like Final Fantasy or Metroid or Metal Gear Solid and even handheld-exclusive series/games like Professor Layton or The World Ends with You. So I'd like to hear you guys' favorites. Oh, and as for the best handheld gaming system, I think I'd like to vote for the Nintendo DS. |

Kingdom Hearts 358/2 Days is potentially the best handheld game I've played. Despite being a spin-off, Final Fantasy - Crystal Chronicles: Echoes of Time was a solid game, too. I've also heard that Kingdom Hearts: Birth by Sleep is one of the best entries in the overall series, though I haven't been able to give it a try due to lack of PSP. I've also been playing the first Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney and it is remarkably awesome. Really gets you thinking, it's very entertaining and the whole crime-related plot is just pretty much win on its own. It should also be said that I like the Pokemon series, but I wouldn't call them my favorite ever. Admittedly, however, Pokemon Mystery Dungeon: Explorers of Sky, despite having some arguably weak gameplay and several dozens of child-like characters, had one of the more deeper and more compelling stories of any Pokemon game I've ever played, and I am NOT ashamed to name myself amongst the other players who cried at the ending of the main plot (as well as the ending of the 5th Special Episode; I mean seriously, that was one heck of an ending). One more game that deserves mention, IMO, is Sonic Chronicles: The Dark Brotherhood. Pretty much my favorite of the modern Sonic games, though the home console versions of Colors and Generations may change that once I play 'em. |

Final Fantasy VII Crisis Core has been my favorite. I'm not really a huge fan of Final Fantasy either but that game was awesome! Followed by Crush. |

So true. One of my favorites as well. :'D I'm also with Miracle on 358/2 Days and the Ace Attorney games, as well as Pokemon. Kingdom Hearts ReCoded is pretty great too. Probably more though, I forget which. |

Anything in the Super Robot Wars Z or OG series'. Strategy RPGs are usually pretty damn fun (if done right; people hype up Final Fantasy Tactics but I personally hated its guts), and SRW just adds a whole new level of awesome factor to the experience. In a similar vein, Zone of the Enders: Fist of Mars was also a mecha-based SRPG, but the unique thing about the game was that you had the option to take actual control of the mech during combat. So if a unit has poor accuracy or dodging ability, the player can step into the cockpit momentarily and use their own reflexes instead of relying on dumb AI. SRWOG Endless Frontier and it's (non-localised ;__; ) sequel, Endless Frontier EXCEED, are just standard RPGs without the strategy aspect, but being able to have your own input on the flow of combat - by selecting different combo techniques, timing the flow into new techniques in order to keep the opponent in the air longer, calling in support attacks at the right moment, etc - was a fresh addition to the usual RPG battle formula, and added another level of challenge to it. The fact that the game also brought back the Spirit Command function from every other Super Robot Wars game ever was just icing on the cake at that point. Delicious, hot-blooded icing. And as Miracle pointed out, the Ace Attorney games are fantastic. I don't usually like those sorts of point-and-click adventure games, but Ace Attorney is done in a way that engages one's brain and makes you want to keep playing. It's dreadfully addictive (unlike actual lawyering) and really appeals to the wannabe detective in me (also unlike actual lawyering). |

Same here, Crisis Core was fun.. but it's constant spamming of cutscenes was rather annoying, but I still liked it and consider it one my favorites. Other favorite handheld games for me were Death Jr, Metal Gear Acid, and Pokemon: SoulSilver. Haven't really played that many handheld games to be honest. |

Pretty much anything from the Pokemon series. =3 As for my favorite handheld system, it's quickly becoming the 3DS. Edited by HollyYoshi, Mar 18 2012, 10:22 AM.

Yup! ![]() The second, third, and sixth were the best in my opinion. The first was good but it seemed to me like the main ideas in the series were still being developed. Then there's the fourth and fifth witch were considered the worst by most of the fanbase. |

They were? But the 5th was the only one that got a DS remake, and from what I had been told, that was because the 5th was the most well received. |

I could be mistaken about 5 being badly received, but I know for a fact that 4 was considered the worst by most players. 4 was mainly criticized because players didn't like that they would have to play through the story three times on increasing difficulties to get everything. Also technically Megaman Battle network was remade in the Japan exclusive DS game, 'Rockman EXE. Operate Shooting Star' where they updated the graphics and a few other things as well as added in a new cross-over scenario where Megaman EXE. meets and works alongside Megaman from the starforce series. |

I think there was something similar to that in the first StarForce. If you played the game on a DS or DS Lite while a BN cartridge was on the GBA slot, you could unlock a novelty mission or task or something like that involving the MegaMan from BN. |
