Mushroom Hill Act 2

"But, Zahtzee, you charismatic stallion." Assuming the gameplay is the best that I can make it, I would focus on good level design, because the fun gameplay doesn't mean too much without fun levels to experiance it in. Edited by Captain Olimar, Mar 11 2012, 12:44 PM.

I object to your claims
|
Well in that case I'd have to go with level design, with graphics being a very close second. |

Level Design. I'd want my levels to look good and all, you know? I wouldn't want a good storyline, game length and design and stuff like that and then the level design ruin it. |

My! That's a pretty snazzy performance there!

Really it all boils down to each person's preference. Personally, a well and engaging story is on the topic of my list. Granted, yes, level design and enemy interactions are inportant, but I rather play a bad game with an awesome story and characters, than a boring but great game. This is why I am in love with Suda 51, because it is the story elements in his games (No More Heroes, Shadows of the Damned, Killer 7, Lollipop Chainsaw) that makes me want to keep playing to know what happens next. Characters as just as important as a story, and personally, the sound and music as well is a great third, because even if the levels are bad, I at least want to be mesmerized by the BGM. Again, it depends on what you like. So story, then characters, and then BGM. |

I chose the graphics. Most of my favorite games were because of the overall presentation the designers took. Games like Tryrush Deppy, SOTN, Knuckles Chaotix, Punky Skunk and Mega Bomberman/Bomberman 94' took me by the heart because of how well designed they were. And speaking of tear jerking graphics, I remember when I first played Rayman and NiGHTS into Dreams on the SEGA Saturn. A tear again... To me the graphics presentation are what make scrolling shooters, vertical and horizontal, a must. Though not all. I was never a fan of games like Darius II/Sagaia, the Thunder Force series, early R-Type games, Abadox or Fantasy Zone/II because there wasn't much to look at. Although there are more important aspects to Shmups that you'd want to pay attention to first. I'm an extremely huge fan of the scrolling shooter genre. Some of my favorites are Galactic Attack/Layer Section, Darius Gaiden, the DonPachi series, DUX, Terra Driver (I don't know how to spell the original name), Fast Striker, Astro Tripper and the most obscure to me Detana TwinBee, which I've recently played but didn't get to far into it. All of the above and more from the 32-bit era and beyond are what I would call beauty and complete masterpieces. One thing I'll add is that I do not care much for HD graphics. The more realistic they try to make things look the more and more I loose faith in the video game industry and even more turned off from what's today. There is also of course the more unrelentingly boring 2D side scrollers and their graphics in which I should get into at a later date. I prefer beauty in a more surreal surrounding like with clouds that have eyes or the tropics where the ground has checkerboard all over it. |
