ITT: Invisible Children and Kony 2012 General

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y4MnpzG5Sqc

Why are you still here? Watch the damn video.

Finished watching it yet? Good. You better be fighting the good fight now; I know I sure am.

Who's going to support the Invisible Children organisation and how? I know for sure I'll be taking part in the shenanigans on April 20th, even if I'm the only one in town doing it. That would be depressing, but equally awesome.

At first I saw this once.

Then I saw it twice.

Then I saw it three times.

I've now seen this a total of four times. Is this a new meme or something?

As for the video...

TL;DW.

What? You said you just watched it four times, and then said you didn't watch it because it was too long? :/

Where the hell is Final Fantasy X HD?!

...This is not a meme. This is serious business.

Started In Uganda (though it has since relocated), there is something called the Lord's Resistance Army (LRA), a violent group started in 1986 whose goal is to establish a theocratic government in the country, lead by Joseph Kony. They have actually abducted, and forced well over sixty thousand children to fight for them, often killing their families and neighbors as well, and they've displaced over two million people, again by force.

What I understand about this 'Invisible Children's' Campaign is that it's supposed to raise awareness on the crimes Kony and and the LRA have committed. Before, not people knew about this. Now, people know, and you can bet they want Kony brought to justice.

It's certain that he'll be brought to justice. Terrorism never wins.

Could this actually be called terrorism? I dont think so Peter. The dude is kidnapping children and making them work as sex slaves or soldiers to kill and mutilate people.

Okay, so first off I'm not loving how exaggerated this video makes things. Sure the numbers might be accurate, but I didn't need him to record his son, his protests, or himself to send the message that all these kids were being made to do horrible things. In the first few minutes I was already skeptical because the video sounds more like it's trying to sell me something than it's trying to help people.

After a bit of the strait facts, it seems obvious that the only things standing between Kony and a nice warm cup of righteous justice is public awareness and involvement, but it can't be that simple, nothing is. If it was, he'd be done for by now.

Just a bit of logical thinking using only what the video tells us, Kony is a warlord. He's powerful because he has an army and weapons to supply said army, but this isn't just another war. We could send every able bodied troop to Africa to arrest him, but he's going to use his defense, and his defense is kids. We want to stop these kids' murder and abuse, but the fact is if we wanted to get at him, we'd have to go a militaristic route, and that means dealing with brainwashed kids who have been given a rifle, massive amounts of drugs, and been told to just shoot at the other guys no matter what they say. The kids we're trying to save are going to be the ones we're fighting against.

And then my second issue comes up; turns out they WERE trying to sell me something. Don't get me wrong, I get that this kind of thing only happens with money behind it, and I'm all for raising awareness of the LRA and it's actions, but the sad fact is that in today's day and age, I just can't trust that my money is going where they say it is. This is some third-party organization that I'm donating too, and I don't know how much of it is actually going into the cause, rather than going into printing off more fake political posters or worse buying guns for soldiers to just shoot up the problem until it's gone.

Sorry, but it just doesn't sit well with me. It's a good message, but it just sounds too biased and sketchy for me to actually follow.

Plus, I'm really not a fan of the posters. If they really wanted him to be known, they should make it a little clearer that Joseph Kony is a maniacal warlord in Africa and not some small-time republican candidate late for the primary.

@Peter: The word 'terrorism' means "the use of violence and intimidation to pursue political aims". Joseph Kony explicitly stated that he wasn't fighting for any reason other than "to maintain his own power". As Blaire said, the LRA's goal is to establish a theocratic government (which never ends well), but Kony himself has no such lofty aims, despite being the leader. So no, it's NOT terrorism; it's just Kony wanting to be the biggest, baddest dude around.

And just saying 'terrorism never wins' doesn't help. This is Africa we're talking about; their governments are unstable and their military forces are substandard. They just don't have the ability to take this guy down without help from other countries, which is what the Kony 2012 project is about; getting the political support needed to get governments to send the African military the technology, training and military support they need to track and arrest Kony.

@Zak: To begin with, your critical thinking skills are admirable. Nicely done, dude. Yes, it's adopting a stylistic stance in some parts, and yes, a lot of the footage was perhaps unnecessary. Unfortunately, that's sometimes what's needed to get people's attentions; if a video doesn't MAKE you interested in watching, most people will just turn it off and forget about it. I'm not saying I approve of it or that it was the best way to go about it, but I can see why it was done.

As for public awareness and involvement not being enough, it's not going to bring Kony down, that's for certain. But what it will do is show governments that this is in the public interest, prompting them to prolong the mission in Africa to hunt him down. Without the public speaking up about it, the government will see it as being an unnecessary expense and will stop, leaving Africa to deal with Kony on their own, and that probably wouldn't go so well.

Yes, Kony will use the children he brainwashed as a meat shield should be be cornered. There's no argument against that. It's a decision that is not going to rest lightly on the shoulders of those who have to pull the trigger. But what alternative is there? If we can save as many as we can, that's the best we can do.

With your second issue, it was never said that you HAD to buy anything. Those that want to, can. Those that don't have no obligation to do so. Using one's words to show their support is free, after all. And in the end, that's all that's needed; vocal support from as many people as possible. I sure as hell aren't spending any money; I'm too poor. XD

And I fully agree with your point on the posters; I was thoroughly disappointed when I saw them and discovered they were the only ones being provided by Invisible Children. It's a poor design move on their part, and yes, it looks like a political advert rather than something actually relevant to Kony's arrest. I really don't understand what their logic is with that, so I'm certainly not touching 'em.

Although I haven't watched the video itself, I've heard quite a bit about it over the past couple of days.
Someone or other linked this and it's a fair reminder to put it back into context.
Still, well... who knows?
