I was talking to my aunt and uncle about RE: Nemesis. About, those things that pop out of the walls and kill you. Like, how they run around the corner and are STILL coming for you. That's just damn weird.

That's the point of the game. To make you aware. For me, when I play, I sometimes let down my guard and boom, I get attacked by a Slasher or Pregnant.

The point of the game? That's part of it, but not the entire point. When you play Dead Space 2, you get the impression that the developers really wanted you to be scared. But once you get used to this game's brand of horror (which doesn't take long) it just isn't scary any more. The only tricks they seem to have in their bag are the jump scare and the hallucination stuff, and those get old really fast. Thus, I think the game failed at one of its primary objectives since I'm not terrified when I play it.

Mind you, I do think they did a better job scaring you with the velociraptor-like enemies that use tactics to flush you out and kill you, but even then it didn't take me long to find holes in their AI routines to exploit. All you have to do is hide in a corner and wait for them to come at you one at a time.

Dead Space 1 was much better in the scares department. It's mostly because they had the good sense to give more quiet periods between frights. So when a scare comes, it feels that much more impactful. Seriously, it does a better job capturing the feel of the Alien movies than the actual Alien games, and I love the Alien series.

But it's like when Dead Space 2 came along, they decided that the game wouldn't be scarier than the first Dead Space unless they jam-packed more scares, and made them all as flashy and dazzling as possible. I'm sorry, but it had the opposite effect. It feels less scary because instead of feeling like I'm in the movie Alien, I just feel like I'm playing CoD. Just replace the soldiers popping out of nowhere with monsters popping out of nowhere instead. I want my Alien game back, not CoD.

Um anything from Silent Hill. Most notably Pyramid Head.

As far as all of this Dead Space talk goes, I find those games to be very weak/watered down compared to past survival horror games like Fatal Frame, Siren, Silent Hill, and even the original Resident Evils.

No matter what, Resident Evil and Silent Hill were the best of all.

Eh, I wasn't so afraid of Redeads and their terror scream as I was about the Wallmasters. Geez, when I younger, I wouldn't play OOT for a week because of those things, but they're not all that bad; "Hey, if you don't want a quick trip to the exit, don't get caught. They do earn you some good money if you can dodge and kill them."

If we were discussing atmosphere of a game that creeps you out, I'd say something else, but that's another subject entirely. I might post that up.

You guys talking about underwater enemies reminded me of something.

When I was about six years old, I accidentally stepped on a hidden bee hive in our backyard. The bees all swarmed me and stung me a zillion times. Or at least, that's what my parents tell me. I can only faintly remember it.

But I do know that ever since then, I've had a pretty intense fear of bees and wasps and the like. So you can imagine how I feel whenever I see a swarmer-type enemy, be it bats or flies or (of course) bees and wasps. Because of this, I still get some chills down my spine in the first Resident Evil game when I need to grab the key underneath the wasp's nest in the dormitory.

Haha, it's kind of funny. I'm not scared of the zombies, the dogs, the spiders, the Tyrant, or even the hunters and the sharks. It's those damn WASPS that keep freaking me out just cause of my real life experiences XD

Not really any underwater enemies scared me, because I knew I could always get out of the water. But, if anything, I think most of the enemies from the Legend of Zelda games, are scary. They beat RE by a mile.

My! That's a pretty snazzy performance there!
Zelda has a different feel of enemies than RE. The enemies are unknown and mystical monsters that dwell in caves, dungeons and more. RE is more undead, plain and simple. Floormasters are what creeped me out in OoT due to there span to multiple. Seeing a Big Daddy in Bioshock always freaked me out as well. And dogs, in any game (mainly RE but can be from others) I was always afraid of. I guess I had a fear of being eaten alive in the dead and dark of night when I heard howls outside.
