What drives an adolescent to take up arms against innocent schoolmates? So rarely is it done - if ever - out of particular hatred for the victims, and likewise is it to promote an underlying cause or message. Rather, it is purely psychopathy. But why? What makes these people so utterly broken (for want of a better word) that they think nothing of meaningless slaughter? Schizophrenia is one answer, but not every case is indicative of a detachment from reality so much as an emotionless drive to kill, some dark impulse that is so alien, so unfathomable to the rest of us, that we simply can't explain it. Mindless, purposeless evil. What gives birth to it? What causes it? What is the thing that turns a normal, sane, law-abiding citizen into something so reviled? To condense these questions down a bit, where does it come from? That's pretty much what I think anyway. Aside from the usual Knight-Templar-ish 'purge the damnable fiends wherever they may hide' thoughts, but that's normal for my ethically-zealous mindset. |

I couldn't resist. I thought it was sad when that Virginia Tech had that shooting some time ago. Another real thought was too much pressure from peers as in peer pressure could have driven this person looney tunes. Maybe it was a thing of passion. Maybe it was the wrong place at the wrong time. All in all, as a human being murder isn't cool nor is it a way to get respect and I'm not sure what drives these psycho's to do what they do. Hell, I don't know what makes sick people like this not get help in the first place. |

From what I've been told, which isn't much mind you, pretty much just what they say through the news headlines the day after, it's a thing of isolation in most cases. The school attacks that come to mind right now are Virginia Tech, the most recent one, and another one where the only distinguishing factor I can remember is that the culprits planned to hop on a plane and fly to Argentina after the murder, all seemed to be the result of a kid who just never fit in, maybe was ridiculed and teased daily to the point of torture. I mean, schoolyard bullying may not be alone enough to drive a person insane, but when it happens daily and by everyone I'm sure it can drive people to consider drastic things. These three shootings were all premeditated, but they didn't have any specified victims, the killers just fired randomly into a crowd or planted a bomb in some random public location, which means that they didn't to kill any specific person, they just wanted to kill everyone, the more they could pick off before being stopped the better. Again, this is all a guestimate. Naturally the motivation will vary from crime to crime, and I wasn't there for any of them nor do I know anyone involved, so I'm not really an informed source either. |

It's baffling the evil a human being is capable of sometimes. I just can't see where the lack of empathy enough to take someone's life, especially with no overarching and heroic justification, would come from... Much less five people's lives. Edited by Brick Mage, Feb 29 2012, 05:19 PM.

Sandopolis Act 1
|
When I think of school shootings, I think of inevitability. "What a sad waste of human life" is what descrbes my feelings, I guess. I think of bad circumstances, individual innocence but collective evil. I can't even really completely blame the shooters themsleves. A gun in a child's hand still makes him a child, so I feel like it's notsomething they do in cold blood, just something that happens from time to time. That's a bit cold on the victim's side, but I've never really had a thing for empathy. I suppose what I'm saying is that the shooter is a victim much like the people who were shot, and that if everyone was alive in a room to talk, there would be forgiveness. Now that just sounds to idealistic. Gotta strike a compromise I guess. Of course, I also think of the old shooting of '99, though every shooting is a different case. And then I shake my had at the inevitable blame the shooting will start. |

Angel Island Act 1

There is something about murder, particularly school shootings that drives a cold shudder up my spine. What confuzzles me the most is someone's idea that they are entitled to do such a thing to their peers. It's just plain scary. It is only a matter of time someone does this again, and the results will be just as horrifying as before. God forbid it doesn't happen in the near future. |

Perfectionist

Oh man, surprised to see the shooting talked about here. Because Chardon is literally only 30-40 minutes away from where I live. Our school told us to wear red for those affected. But yeah, TUC pretty much wrapped my thoughts up perfectly. |

I feel sad whenever I hear of a school shooting. Not only for those who get hurt in the trouble but the fact that people drove someone so far as to make them want to take someone else's life. Makes me wonder about the world everyday. |
