I had Organic Chem Lab this morning and I had the misfortune of sticking out like a sore thumb since my usual lab partner chose today of all days to be absent. As such, I ended up being partnered up with this odd duo that like to spend their time either speaking in English (that might not be odd for most of you, but this is a Hispanic country I live in, so it's pretty uncommon for me) or singing old salsa songs.

One of them in particular had been a temporary lab partner of mine in another chem lab last year, and I recall him randomly shifting between Spanish and English when talking to people, even if they weren't very savvy in the latter. Whenever he spoke to me, I understood everything he told me perfectly, but I always answered in Spanish regardless, since despite spending a lot of my time reading and/or writing in English, I haven't actually practiced my English speech for a while now. I had tried talking in front of the mirror lately and it came out jarred because of its rustiness. I know what the words mean and how to pronounce them, but my speech is so underused I end up tongue-twisting several words (specially words ending in "-tion"). So you know, I had figured that while I got back to practicing my speech and all that, I'd refrain from speaking in English out in public.

Then today, I was busy drying some samples before proceeding with the experiment. It was taking me quite a while and a teensy bit of effort, so he just stood there waiting for me to finish so that he could take over. Determined to finish up soon without screwing up, I placed all of my focus on what I'm doing. Just then, he leans over my shoulder and asks, "Can I take this sample while you finish with that one?"

"I don't think that one has dried yet."

I then stopped what I was doing when I realized what language I had answered in, though hard as I try, I cannot remember how I sounded when I said it. He remained uncharacteristically quiet throughout the rest of the experiment, which means I either surprised him or I spoke that one line so badly it must have been ear-grating.

The point is, though, I always answer in Spanish when people speak to me. The only reason I answered back in English was because I heard English, I needed to respond, and my first instinctive impulse was to answer the same way I was asked.

It seems like a silly story, and lo and behold, it is. But it still somehow managed to make me spend most of the day thinking about it.

So, =SB=, has an instinctive response from your own behalf ever surprised you too?

I object to your claims
Okay, on many an occasion I happen to be around people who are deaf. I know a few words in sign language. Can't carry a conversation, but I can at least excuse myself if I need to get by and a couple of them are blocking my path.

The problem is, if this occurs, I tend to vocalize what I want to say - without signing. And then a few seconds later....I realize what an idiot I was.

Break out the L-word. The other L-word.
I think it's pretty natural to reply in the same language as what you're replying to. I honestly don't know a language other than English fluently, but that's what I've heard, and it makes sense. It's probably pretty awkward speaking a different language than the person you're talking to, even if you both understand the other's language, so perhaps your mind tries to make it easier by replying in the same language.

I have so many moments where I'm mentally talking in English to myself. Even in everyday activities for no good reason.

It just happen naturally. I do suck at speaking in English (better that my classmates but still kind of odd), so if someone asked me something in English I would probably answer them in English.

Oh gosh, I did that once with a deaf classmate. XP It actually made me feel guilty.

To start, I find something about that scenario ridiculously adorable in a way, Mira-chan. x3;

I don't really have any sort of moments like this, but you could say a lot of my responses to simple questions rather than being honest thoughts will be stock phrases I go back to because I just suck at small talk. Stuff like "How are you going" will almost always be responded to with "Eh, not too bad. Yourself?" or "Can't complain". But really I wouldn't be surprised if that's just what everyone does really. *shrugs*

But yeah. Can't think of anything like that which comes to mind~

It doesn't necessarily have to be something language-related, really. Just share stories about a time you've been surprised by your own instinct.

And that same thing tends to happen to me a lot, Chaos-san. XD I'm pretty sure it's normal for a lot of people.

I suppose I could say that I've had this happen before. I mean, I've had moments where I've done things instinctively and not noticed that I was doing it until after I did it. Y'know, like when a glass falls, before I know it I've caught it and have no recollection of how that happened.

We all make choices. But in the end, our choices make us
That was a funny little thing that happened Mira. Kind of reminds me of how if I know the Spanish speaker Im speaking to knows English, Ill most likely answer them in English even if they're speaking in Spanish.

With people who don't know a lick of English though, its so hard for me to talk to them. >__< I understand them perfectly (except for some certain types of Spanish like Cuban, Ecuadorian, and Puerto Rican Spanish. Its hard for me to understand them) and as you said with English Mira, I know the words and all but my mouth just doesn't let me say them right.

I guess its just me getting nervous since I know I can't switch back to English if I mess up. My speaking of Spanish has been getting worse. I really need to start practicing more.

As for instinctive responses that surprised me? I think once I ended up saying a something in English to a someone who only knew Spanish. Can't remember anything else really.
