CBSNews

(AP) LOS ANGELES - Whitney Houston, who ruled as pop music's queen until her majestic voice and regal image were ravaged by drug use, erratic behavior and a tumultuous marriage to singer Bobby Brown, has died. She was 48.
Houston's publicist, Kristen Foster, said Saturday that the singer had died, but the cause and the location of her death were unknown.

News of Houston's death came on the eve of music's biggest night — the Grammy Awards. It's a showcase where she once reigned, and her death was sure to case a heavy pall on Sunday's ceremony. Houston's longtime mentor Clive Davis was to hold his annual concert and dinner Saturday; it was unclear if it was going to go forward.

At her peak, Houston the golden girl of the music industry. From the middle 1980s to the late 1990s, she was one of the world's best-selling artists. She wowed audiences with effortless, powerful, and peerless vocals that were rooted in the black church but made palatable to the masses with a pop sheen.

More at link.

As someone who grew up with her music, this news feels so weird and awkward. An absolute shame she succumbed so soon. RIP.

Its crazy how shitty her life got and just how sloppy she seemed to come off as later on. It wasn't too surprising to hear people just jump to the conclusion that her death was caused by her drug addiction which obviously wasn't the case.

Not to be mean.. but pre toxicology, it got out from the family that Whitney was found dead in her bathtub with bottles of prescription drugs like Xanax and Alchohol.. I won't say she WANTED to go out but taking uppers and downers like that were maybe something she experimented with pre-party to try and relieve stress and just be sort of eased.. but that is superbly dangerous. So to say that her death was not caused by her drug problem after news like that, it ignores what she fell into.. and once you're in it's hard to get out no matter who you are. It is disappointing but it seems like drugs that robbed her of her career probably allowed her to rob herself of her life, accidentally or not.

She was being hounded because of a relationship with a younger man who I honestly believe she was just friends with, but the media was twisting and contorting it to something more, and they don't allow much room for privacy which I think only helps to push some of these stars over the edge with their sometimes super overly aggressive intrusive tendencies.

It is disheartening that so many havent heard or tried to pursue at least listening to her music on Youtube at the very least, music from her, Michael Jackson,.. hell even artists like Buddy Holly and Frank Sinatra, they were all glorious and laid the foundation for music and what it is today, and Whitney could easily be a force in today's music industry because of that wonderful voice.

I agree with Bliz, you guys need to hear more and to venture out some D:
I know what you are saying, but it is not a crime that I have not listened to her music. I have listened to MJ and I do like Sinatra, but not the point. Point is that her style of music just does not interest me. I am not saying that she is bad; she is one of the best voices ever in our time. It is just not my style to listen to.

I never said it was a crime I was just calling it disheartening that so many people in quick succession said they hadn't heard her music only because of how great it was for the industry and music in general. It's not a crime to not like anyones music. XD

Tch, Whitney Houston.
Bodyguard trash.

"I'm every woman" plays every 15 fudgeing minutes where I work.
Give me a break.
Did everyone freak out like this when Bernie Mac or Dennis Hopper died?
No sir.
Just listen to the announcement, quickly grieve and move on.
Good lord.

That was insensitive. :/

We're not grieving as much as at the initial impact but I mean seriously the woman was one of the most influential singers of all time and just died young, I mean sure some people (jackasses, right or wrong) say they've seen this coming for years.

I was sad when Bernie Mac went since I enjoyed what he did but he didn't get to the same amount of people as Whitney did, she was certainly cultural phenomenon.

To be fair, I also didn't like the news of Hopper's death but he was a generation out of place so there weren't as many left to publicly remember him or say they enjoyed him at all from his work, especially when he started out in the 50's through his golden era in the 70s.. I mean Apocalypse Now and Easy Rider, those two films alone were great, and he was even in Super Mario Bros... Much less a commercial success but hey. xD

But as with Bernie, the cultural and cross-cultural impact just wasn't there, Whitney was a.. the force of music.. and that will always be broader reaching than a force of film.

Overplaying her music, especially if you work around it and aren't fond of it is irritating I'd agree but still, the timing was just a shock.. this is basically as big as when MJ went.

New Internet rule: The easiest way to separate understandable forum members from the assholes is to simply have a well-renowned singer die and lie in wait. It happens every single time.

Its just what most jerks would suspect so I was trying to be respectful. But yes, I have heard the information that surfaced of drugs and whatnot being found. Way to quote me and make me look even more dumb Bowie. XD

And it doesn't matter if an artist's music annoys you. They are human beings and anyone should be respectful of someone's death.

I've never heard of a phenomenon where people pretend to be long-time fans of a singer that has just died. People tend to fall into one of three categories: fans that lament, non-fans who empathize with the death, or non-fans who don't empathize. Some people may become fans after listening to their music and deciding they like it, but that isn't what you've described. So I'm not sure just exactly what it is you're even talking about, much less whom you're even talking to in this thread.

Your last paragraph is also excessively ironic that I can only ask what the f*** are you going on about? =|

I think I put too much time into this post. I need to go get lunch.

I don't think I made you look bad Rikku, that's not what I was going for. xD

I was just saying that it had to be suspected even among her biggest fans, and sure enough. I think I'll withdraw from this thread now, I've grieved and chatted and gotten a nice convo out of it, so before even the slightest chance something gets heated since there seems to be a bit of a tension flare I'm backing out.

RIP Whitney.

Don't tell me what I can or can't do!

If I'm honest, for a long time, I was annoyed with Whitney. I'd watch American Idol and get sick of her songs being sung over and over again. But her death made me listen to her stuff and I cannot stop listening to it. (I'm LOVING I Wanna Dance With Somebody) I really hate myself for becoming a fan this way but Whitney Houston is definitely a vocal legend and has no doubt inspired so many singers that we see today. I always held some respect for her but I feel so sad because I never got to enjoy her back when I was younger. Although, I was only a toddler so I guess you can understand how late I am. I really feel like I missed out on such a great talent, but now I'm for sure going to see her movie this summer. I think any person who genuinely loves music can't help but be sad about this.

I liked her music I suppose.
I never knew her by name actually, but I recognize a lot of her music. I'm like that with almost all musicians.

Your post got me thinking.

I can't believe that one day, when I have children, that they will grow up without knowing Whitney or Micheal or any of these talented artists that have passed on.

I mean, sure they can listen to some CD's or watch some documentaries of their life but the point is, it kinda got to me thinking that my kids will live in a world where there is no more Whitney Houston. Not that big of a deal but meh.
I know one things for sure, Ill make sure that my kids are enlightened when it comes to music. They can listen to their little boy bands sure. But I wanna make sure they grow up with some actual good music. Whether it be from the past or present.
