CBSNews

(AP) LOS ANGELES - Whitney Houston, who ruled as pop music's queen until her majestic voice and regal image were ravaged by drug use, erratic behavior and a tumultuous marriage to singer Bobby Brown, has died. She was 48.
Houston's publicist, Kristen Foster, said Saturday that the singer had died, but the cause and the location of her death were unknown.

News of Houston's death came on the eve of music's biggest night — the Grammy Awards. It's a showcase where she once reigned, and her death was sure to case a heavy pall on Sunday's ceremony. Houston's longtime mentor Clive Davis was to hold his annual concert and dinner Saturday; it was unclear if it was going to go forward.

At her peak, Houston the golden girl of the music industry. From the middle 1980s to the late 1990s, she was one of the world's best-selling artists. She wowed audiences with effortless, powerful, and peerless vocals that were rooted in the black church but made palatable to the masses with a pop sheen.

More at link.

As someone who grew up with her music, this news feels so weird and awkward. An absolute shame she succumbed so soon. RIP.

What is the difference between a duck?

I caught wind with the first articles that came out online, and it was kind of awkward since they played a Whitney song at the Chinese place I was eating at, and it seemed to be random and not put in for what had transpired.

It's sad that she had to get mixed up with drugs and Bobby Brown, I think that she was unhappy and probably OD'ed.. the timing was just too coincidental for me to think otherwise, as she was to attend a party tonight and the fact that the Grammy's an event she seemingly owned for some time is tomorrow.

It's strange that less than 24 hours ago there were rumors that she was going to try and start a career revival by joining the judges panel on the X-Factor, only to hear news like this not that long after.

Reports are coming in saying that there's no immediate evidence of drugs in her system. But honestly, we still don't know how she died, and such a sudden development should still be unsurprising. Her life became so shitty that this outcome was almost inevitable. But I don't want to put myself in a funky mood as with MJ's death (a part of me ain't over that either). Rather, I'm listening to I Wanna Dance With Somebody. Such a good song. <3

We are still watching
One memory of the 1990s that I've always had in the back of my head was the music that rolled on through and of course no one could've cataloged that without thinking of Whitney. Very, very unfortunate and unforeseeable. Goes to say that the star that burns brightest burns the fastest.

Christmas is back again

Is it just me, but doesn't a lot of famous singers die at an early age.
There's bound to be someone guilty for her sudden death. Not considering this like the similar fate as that of Michael Jackson.

Nevertheless I remember watching a video from my children school about her career in one of my music classes. Well sure didn't have an easy life, but at least her music will surely continue to live on.

This doesn't include me, but just saying for those who do.

My! That's a pretty snazzy performance there!
It was really out of the blue. But since I did not listen to her music, it did not effect me much. Still, it is sad to hear :(

Oh dear, my generation disappoints me again. I'm surprised to learn just how many people don't actually know any of her material (outside of "I Will Always Love You"; at least, I hope you guys know that one 8|). This is tragic. Some of you guys need to understand exactly what type of singer the world's just lost here:

Also, what is usually considered the best Super Bowl performance of the Star Spangled Banner ever:

No autotune crap. No straining between octaves. No wild and silly ad-libs. Just plain ol' singing. There isn't a current female artist that can compete, and probably never will be again. 8|

It is disheartening that so many havent heard or tried to pursue at least listening to her music on Youtube at the very least, music from her, Michael Jackson,.. hell even artists like Buddy Holly and Frank Sinatra, they were all glorious and laid the foundation for music and what it is today, and Whitney could easily be a force in today's music industry because of that wonderful voice.

I agree with Bliz, you guys need to hear more and to venture out some D:

"I Will Always Love You" is one of the few English songs I used to listen to when I was little. Gosh, I loved that song so much, even if back then I couldn't understand it. RIP Whitney Houston.

We all make choices. But in the end, our choices make us
My jaw dropped once I heard the news from my parents. I listen to some of her songs from time to time and she indeed did have a powerful and beautiful voice.

I remembered growing up watching her in that one Cinderella movie with Brandy. Does anyone else remember that movie? I got even more sad once I thought about that, her being the fairy god mother, in that golden dress. :'(

Its crazy how shitty her life got and just how sloppy she seemed to come off as later on. It wasn't too surprising to hear people just jump to the conclusion that her death was caused by her drug addiction which obviously wasn't the case.

But yes, RIP Whitney Houston.
