How you play Sonic: Adventure or Action?; Free Roam or Stage-after-Stage?

For a jubilee, made out of diamonds.
As a gamer, my favourite kind of games are the ones where you can simply run around and explore. This is why Sonic Adventure DX is my favourite Sonic game of all time, while the more modern Sonic games I consider "meh" (except for Generations).

So how do you prefer to play Sonic: free roaming freedom or stage-by-stage imprisonment?

Yep.
Definitely Adventure. I prefer the more free way, without enemies blocking your path every 5 seconds.

And Sonic Adventure is my favorite game too, so.. =3

I object to your claims
I always found both Adventure games a bit too linear, save for SA1's Adventure Fields and both game's Treasure Hunting stages- you really only have a single path to go through, save for the occasional shortcut that really doesn't shave that much time off.

What I like, however, is stage-by-stage, but with multiple paths, and hub worlds. The best of both worlds. This is why Unleashed and Generations are my two favorite Sonic games. With the former, though the stages can be a little linear at times, the vast hub worlds add a very nice sensation of exploration where you can just kick back and look around. With the latter, while White Space was a little lacking as far as hub worlds go in offering exploration capabilities, the multiple paths help to make up for that.

I prefer the simple stage-by-stage. With good transitions, like in Sonic 3 & Knuckles, it can give the illusion your traveling from one place to another as your running through the stage.

When you're given the ability to roam it can take a good hour just trying to find where you're suppose to go. And even then once you get to a destination you may run into the Mario 64 system of "you cannot enter this stage without": collecting (blank) (I hate you sun and moon medals, I really do), doing a certain task or completing a stage. It becomes a bother, 'cause I just want to complete the stage and go straight back into the action. Don't get me wrong, though, I did like exploring about like in Sonic Adventure, but I seriously don't want to relive Sonic '06 when you have to run about as Silver (he's such a snail).

I still can't use this.

It depends on what the goal of the game is and how well it succeeds in achieving that goal. I like goofing around in Unleashed's hubs doing missions and things just as much as I enjoyed blasting through Generations extremely linear campaign. On the flip-side, Colors and ShtH were relative bores despite their respective linearity and open-ended natures. Ultimately, I can have fun with either or.

My! That's a pretty snazzy performance there!
Sonic has always been an adventure game for me. I understand that defeating a set number of enemies has become somewhat a staple in some game, but the sense of exploring and a story to fall back on make it more enjoyable to me. Platforming is one of my personal favorite styles of gaming, so I suppose that helps.

Adventure's storyline was linear, but SA's stages were amazing, and SA2's were even better. I definitely prefer the SA level designs, above even the physics, possibly.
I don't really care for open storylines, I only care for open stages.

My sentiments exactly.

Of course, though, I don't mind at all the capacity for exploration...
It works best in games like The Legend of Zelda or Shadow of the Collosus, though. Even Zelda is linear compared to many of the modern open-ended types of games, though...
And frankly, if there's not a greater creative purpose to that sort of thing, the super-duper-gigantinormous open worlds,
Like in, say, Minecraft,
Then I've no use for it.

Oh, and Power Stars will forever be a better way of entering a stage than those damn FOURTH Chaos Emerald sun and moon medals.

I understand that Sonic Adventure 1 had a slight free roam feel to it but in essence it was still the same old stage after stage sort of sonic game as all the free roam let you do was travel to and from the levels and occasionally you could wonder off to find little secrets and stuff.

I prefer the older sonic's like 1-3 though adventure 1 and 2 still got me going. I have to say im not a big fan of the wii sonic games as they seem to be trying to hard to incorporated the whole movement idea.... give me an old sega genesis game pad any day :3
