Pictures make everything better

We've had a few recent favorite song topics, and I tried this in the past with mixed results (granted my method was extremely flawed), but I'm still curious to know: What is this forum's favorite Sonic songs out of the entire series? What is that one song that will be number one, the one song most of us can agree on is stupid-awesome? A tall order, you say? Probably not as much with voting! Here's the process, tried and true and shamelessly nicked straight from elsewhere:

Rules:

1. Only stage (both 1 and 2 player) and special stage songs, boss songs, and vocal themes are eligible.

2. State up to your top ten songs from a single soundtrack in order from 1 to 10. If you like more than 10, you can list them as Honorable Mentions, denoted by an x. instead of a number.

3. While you can cast votes for multiple soundtracks' songs, you aren't obligated to vote on every soundtrack, or even ten songs from a soundtrack.

4. You can only vote on a single game once. A later ballot will override any previous ballots for that particular game. Multiple votes for the same song will disqualify your ballot outright.

5. You're allowed to comment on your votes, although they're not mandatory. Interesting, insightful, and funny comments for the winning songs will be posted in a final tally thread.

6. Voting ends April 9, 2012 at 12:00 AM EST; So you get a month to think about it and get in as many games as possible.

NOTE: You must list which particular version of a song you're voting on if it's different for separate acts or parts of a level. So if you want to vote on Sonic CD's music, remember: Each of the eight level's BGMs has two versions for the PAL and NTSC soundtracks, and each of those two versions has four remixes for each time period. That's 64 songs. So just saying Palmtree Panic isn't enough; which Palmtree Panic?

In short, make it clear exactly which piece of music you're voting on by denoting the act or its actual title on the game's official soundtrack.

Sample Ballot:
Quote:

Game A

1. song a; comment
2. song b; comment
3. song c; comment
...
x. song f; comment
x. song g; comment

This format doesn't have to be exact, so long as you have the songs numerically ranked properly.

Scoring:

Scoring is done in tiered fashion meaning the higher in your list a song, the more points it gets. Example:

1. Song A: 4 points
2. Song B: 3 points
3. Song C: 3 points
4. Song D: 2 points
5. Song E: 2 points
6. Song F: 2 points
7. Song G: 1 point
8. Song H: 1 point
9. Song I: 1 point
10. Song J: 1 point
x. Song K: 0 points
x. Song L: 0 points

I'll start this one off;

Sonic Adventure 2

1.Supporting Me (Biolizard Boss theme); You all know how much I love this song. ^_^ Best in the entire Sonic franchise. And if there's one line that I love, one line that really 'gets' me, it would be this one, right here;

'Everything's just like
An illusion, I'll be loosing you
Before long...'

Powerful lyrics already, but the delivery, the note of despair in the tone of voice, makes it all the more meaningful.

2. Throw It All Away (Shadow's Theme); You know, I really shouldn't like this song. Never been a fan of...whatever style of 'singing' the guy's using - is it supposed to be screamo without the screaming?=/ But not only do I absolutely love this song, I've got it on my ipod and am listening to it as I type this. True story. |3

3.Hidden Base; This is my favorite 'pyramid' level just because of this song. Not kidding. ;)

4.Radical Highway; Vengeance will certainly be mine. c wut i did thar? *smirk*

5.Security Hall; Certainly makes trying to find three Chaos Emeralds in less than five minutes that much more bearable.

6.Live and Learn; Do I have to explain my reasoning behind this one? :P

7.For True Story (Final Vs Sonic/Shadow theme; I think the song is correct - I don't see any stars twinkling, nor any shining moon. Or maybe I'm just in a bad position.

8.White Jungle; I can only understand a few words, but damn if this song still doesn't sound awesome.

9. It Doesn't Matter (Sonic's theme); Sorry folks, but this version is miles better than SA1's. xD

10. City Escape; Need I say more?

x. Meteor Herd; Normally, I hate rap, as most of you know. But this song has an excellent beat to it. Parts of it also sound very....extraterrestrial, for lack of a better word. It's clever and catchy, something I love to hear more of in music.

TIME TO REALLY EXPLODE!
Sonic CD (Japanese Soundtrack)

1. Metallic Madness Present- Quintessential Sonic music for me; it's fast paced, catchy, and it fits the level excellently.

2. Stardust Speedway Bad Future - Perfect for its level and boss fight. A very close second, for sure.

3. Wacky Workbench Present - It employs elements of an industrial setting with a bit of (wait for it) wackiness and combines them quite well.

4. Boss - Definitely the most unique Eggman battle theme out there. I just find it very catchy.

5. Quartz Quadrant Bad Future - All of the bad future themes are excellent, giving you a sense of "well, I just screwed this place up" with their dark tunes. Quartz Quadrant's theme is no exception to that, and it's fast-paced as hell, which I like.

6. Final Fury - A very epic final boss theme used for a rather mediocre final boss.

7. Palmtree Panic Bad Future - Actually kind of creepy at times.

8. Tidal Tempest Present - Very atmospheric and relaxing.

9. Metallic Madness Bad Future - This theme really makes you think you messed up with its taunting.

10. Collision Chaos Present - Nice, peppy, and fun.

No harm in me participating. I'll start at the beginning since that's the easiest soundtrack to rank. Also, the list has been expanded to include a lot more games and versions for your voting pleasure. =P

Sonic The Hedgehog (MegaDrive)

1. Final Zone: Probably an unorthodox opinion, but this is definitely the classic song I listen to the most due to its sheer simplicity. To me, it's the defining theme of the era, stripped of any fluff or nonsense for pure concentrated awesome. The percussion's just infectious.

2. Scrap Brain Zone: This isn't a song I listen to a lot, but when I'm compelled to and I hear that little breakdown in the middle of the melody, I remember just how much I actually enjoy it.

3. Spring Yard Zone: The most soulful and attitudinal song on the game, as if Jackson had come into the picture much earlier than purported; it's got a jazzy melody and smooth-flowing beat.

4. Star Light Zone: I mean, it's Star Light Zone. A cute, peppy song with an outgoing, almost magical, starry theme with its xylophone lead and sax-like backing. It's impossible to ignore.

5. Green Hill Zone: The first song of the game, the first in the series, and the first we get to hear of Sonic's world. I don't think I have significant love for the melody, but due to its sheer importance, it deserves mentioning.
Sonic Unleashed

1. VS. Titan & Big Mother: The Werehog battle theme no one remembers. It's a frenetic song: the anxious violins give it a cinematic flair reminiscent of Michael Giacchino (The Incredibles) and the drum breakdown at the end is insane. I love this song so much that I would goof off in Titan encounters just to hear it.

2. Rooftop Run Night: Another jazzy tune that's got a hell of a lot of funk and soul in it. The electric guitar is great, and they utilized accordions in there. Freaking accordions. Probably some harmonicas too. This song just rocks.

3. Skyscraper Scamper Day: When you hear that saxophone blare at the beginning, you know shit's about to go down. It starts off with a bang and doesn't lose any momentum from there. Great song.

4. Cool Edge Night: The Werehog gave us some kickarse music, didn't he? This song stays primarily in synth keyboard territory with a snappy little beat underneath. I would actually argue it's the most classic-sounding song in the whole game.

5. Jungle Joyride Day: A southeast Asian/jungle-themed treat. Strong drums, atmospheric wind instruments, and little bit of synthesizer to give the song some modernity and an undercurrent of danger. Daytime Sonic's best song.

6. Arid Sands Night: More of that Giacchino/Pixar influence is shining through in this one. Just another extremely playful and upbeat jazz tune. One could just dance to it.

7. Skyscraper Scamper Night: This level has a bright night city aesthetic to it that almost hearkens back to the Golden Era of Hollywood. The actual song is no exception and is nostalgic and notable in that regard.

8. Dragon Road Night: The Asian melody is very simple, perhaps a little repetitive, but memorable in its construction. I just like the way it sounds.

9. Jungle Joyride Night: This song is a bit of a surprise. It completely ditches the normal jazz for a more somber, mysterious atmosphere and more traditional instruments. It's quite beautiful.

10. Windmill Isle Day: A light, airy, playful little song. It's just an innocent little tune, and I love the accordion there.

x. Savannah Citadel Day: A song in the vain of Windmill Isle in tone, but spiced up with a cocky little guitar instead. A true toss up between the two, but I ultimately prefer Windmill Isle.

x. Vs. Egg Dragoon: Another solid boss song in the long list of solid boss songs. I especially like the violins near the end; they give the song both tension and a feeling of finality.

x. Endless Possibilities: It's yet another happy-fun-time buttrock song describing Sonic's awesome philosophy, and newcomer Jared Reddick isn't bad at all. Can't really hate this song.

If hub music were allowed, my list would be longer and probably completely different. Dear lord, the hub music is condensed magic. I just love this soundtrack so much. Thank you, Based God.

Sonic Unleashed

1. Jungle Joyride Night; This song is simply beautiful. Those violins give it a very haunting and somber mood, something that is only punctuated by a piano a little later in. Musical gold.

2. Skyscraper Scamper Night; This song can be summed up like this; fifties-style, modern flair. Love every bit of it.

3. Rooftop Run Night; Oh Werehog battle theme that everyone does remember. You are actually pretty awesome. But why must you interrupt the jazzy with obvious Italian music influence awesomeness that is Rooftop Run Night when ever I face a horde of enemies.

4. Skyscraper Scamper Day That saxophone at the beginning is awesome. And it leads in very nicely with the rest of the song. Such an upbeat and catchy tune.

5. Rooftop Run Day; Catchy and infectious. What more needs to be said?

6. Dragon Road Day; From the moment you hear that drum at the beginning, you know you're in for a treat.

7. Dragon Road Night; A bit more upbeat than the other night musics. I like that.

8. Eggmanland Day; Though the stage may be Hell and a half, it does have awesome music.

9. Cool Edge Night; Curse you Werehog! Not only do you have awesome gameplay, but awesome music as well. And this song is no exception. Again I say; Curse you!!!

10. Werehog Boss Battle Theme; With this, over half of my top ten songs in Unleashed are from the night sections. Can you really blame me? :P

And Bliz, why isn't hub music allowed? I wanted to include Mystic Ruins as part of my top songs in SA1.... D:

I wanted to only focus on certain types of game music, because otherwise the soundtracks get absolutely ridiculous in terms of length. Overall, it would be much harder to keep track of everyone's votes. Also, the most popular songs tend to be the eligible ones anyway. It was a decision borne out of a need to make this simple. =P

You guys really want your comments featured, don't you? =P j/k, it's actually interesting reading about how you feel about your choices. Speaking of which, the tally's already looking quite nice. If we get more people in here, I wonder where the site's collective tastes will swing. C'mon =SB=! Do me proud (or make me confused with some weird choices; whichever you feel like). Anyway, slightly more work on my plate:

Sonic & The Secret Rings

1.The Palace That Was Found: I'm not sure what a song about rocking out has to do with an evil factory. If nothing else, the song might just completely undermine the environment. But that's probably more in line with Sonic's philosophy, innit? He'll make a party out of any circumstance. Overall, this song is extremely catchy and my favorite on the entire game.

2. Unawakening Float: The song to the final level isn't one that fawns about dashing heroics, but instead is riddled with simple lyrics about confusion, guilt, and anxiousness. Unusual for a Sonic-centric story, but it plays up the multiple conflicts of the game and the location's place in the climax, and -ironically- compelled me to want to beat it all the more.

3. Let The Speed Mend It: Probably the only song on the soundtrack that bothers to blend Arabic instruments within its rock stylings. It reminds me of Unleashed's stuff in that way which is always a good thing. Simple, unintrusive lyrics about being tossed into the conflict and approaching the situation the only way Sonic knows how: running. T'is good.

4. Seven Rings In Hand: Everyone seems to hate this song (which I primarily blame on the ill-advised repeating of a few chorus lines in the main menu), but to me, anything with Steve Conte's vocals on it is just great. I hope Sega will get him back in the future.

How do you hate Seven Rings in Hand?=/

Anyway....

Sonic Generations (Console and PC version)

1. Modern Crisis City; Violins make everything better. Including ruined cities two hundred years into the future. The very beginning beat, right before they get into the violins, is probably my favorite part for whatever reason. I also can't help but be reminded of Unleashed's Spagonia for some reason.

2. Kingdom Valley Remix; Play this song on Modern Crisis City. It fits excellently.

3. Classic Crisis City; Is it bad that my top three songs are remixes from Sonic 06? ^^;; But this is a good song. Rock tunes are awesome, are they not?

4. Open Your Heart (Perfect Chaos Boss theme); Look! Something that's not originally from 06! It's a miracle! There's only one thing bad about this tune. And that's is that the best part comes towards the end - and by that time, I've already gotten three hits on PC and the music changes.

5. For True Story (Shadow Rival Battle; Everyone seems to hate this song. I don't see why. Best part is right before the battle, when it builds up....

Posted Image

And ends with a climatic beat along with an shot that hearkens back to SA2 in the best way possible. But if stars don't twinkle and the moon doesn't shine...*points to image* how do you explain this?

6. Silver Rival Battle; More 06 music, huh? Hey, I heard that the music was that game's only redeeming feature. So there! :P

7. Stardust Speedway Bad Future JP (Metal Sonic Rival Battle); For the simple reason that it's highly catchy. The end.

8. Classic Speed Highway; It's Speed Highway, people. What's not to love?

9. Modern Speed Highway; See above. :P

10. Classic Chemical Plant; This was always my favorite stage in Sonic 2. Music's still as good as ever.

x. Hydrocity Remix; While it isn't one of my favorites, anything that hearkens back to my favorite classic stage is awesome. (Now if SEGA would just release DLC with this stage and Sweet Mountain part of it, I can die happy)

x. Toxic Caves Remix; Fits very well with Classic Chemical Plant, as a lot seem to think.

x. Modern Rooftop Run; Hmmm...the flags of all the countries coming together, a bunch of balloons floating around....they must be celebrating something? The restoration of the planet, perhaps?

Damnit Blaire! You beat me to Sonic Gen! ლ(ಠ益ಠლ) Sigh... Oh wells.

Sonic Generation (PS3, XBox360)

1. Crisis City (Modern); I can say my heart enjoys listening to the violin, and this song has PLENTY of that. For a city in ruin, it's got some calming section in the song. <D Sidenote: I took the controller from my friend play both Acts, bobbed my head the entire time, and got all Red Rings on my first go. Bouse.

2. City Escape (Modern); Sega knows how to make the stage stage song memorable. |D It's got everything I liked about the original. Lyrics. Similar guitar notes. While also putting their own spin to it. Much appreciated. ^^

3. Planet Wisp (Modern); It's got that calming feel to it, while also keeping up with Sonic's pace. I'm sad to say I didn't get to really enjoy Sonic Colors, since my friend and I were doing a speed run through it so we wouldn't get charged extra from the RedBox. That and DRILL!!!

4. Rooftop Run (Modern); And, again, violins. =3 I've always liked this song from Unleashed, but now I'm gonna have a tough time going back to it, with me desiring to listen to this version more and more.

5. Sky Sanctuary (Classic); Ah, I really love how they used the same techno like sounds as the original.

6. Chemical Plant Zone (Classic); The Modern version does have something going for it, but I've prefer this one. Sounds like the original, but it was the little things that really improved this song to my taste. ^^

7. Ballon Park (Type A); Yes, the multiplayer song from Sonic 3 & Knuckles. Why? Catchy. =D

8. Time Eater (Classic); Bad future for Classic Sonic... REAL bad future. D:

9. Toxic Cave; This would probably be higher if it didn't hate to particular stage SO MUCH! I've spent an unGODLY amount of time in this one stage never to pass it. (And I refuse to look up a guide in how to beat it!) >.< I'll admit, just like Balloon Park, it's catchy.

10. Death Egg Boss; I can see Classic Sonic now... -looks up to the giant egg bot- o.o ... epic...

x. Perfect Chaos (Phase 1); The chorus doesn't cut it for me. However, the rest is what I really like about this song.

x. Casino Night Zone Pinball; Carnival time? It's got this no dialog, black and white feel to it. xD

My! That's a pretty snazzy performance there!
God this is going to be a LONG LONG list of posts of come from me, sorry to say lol.

Sonic and the Secret Rings
To reply to Bliz in personal...

10) The Wicked Wild
Apart from any Sonic game, Secret Rings take a bold approach to create a fantasy; hence Dinosaur Jungle. The music is very catchy and it always is stuck in my head when I turn on the game. Sadly, that's all it is. It is a mediocre tune at best but I still find it enjoyable, in the rock guitar portions especially. Granted it brings a Jurassic Park field, that is if the dinosaur did not try to kill. Good tune, but I have heard better.

9) Poison Spear
For your first boss battle: a sand scorpion. Really? Well at least the music is awesome. It brings it in really well with the guitar riffs and it feels like you have the feeling of that it is going to be no problem and it will be a piece of cake. Besides the awesome setting it creates, the track in pretty forgettable. I had to listen to it again honestly to remember it. Oh well, good choice at least for a first boss.

8) The White Of Sky
This track feels very classy to me. The only problem is that this track does not fit well as you are in a dome of fossils and death. It is a bit too happy in my opinion. However the lyrics do set it to make it feel like it is. Not much to say about it though. I like it, but I can see that it can be forgettable.

7) The Palace That Was Found
Much to what Bliz said, she is right. However it is not my favorite sadly. The music is tense and for people who played this game, this stage has its share of difficulty. It makes you on the edge of you seat hoping that you won't get hit by blades or spikes. It is an unusual song for an unusual setting, but it works.

6.5) How It Started
Sorry I wanted to put this in there. This song is amazing as it explains Sonic and the Ifrit's battle between that getting a World Ring means that Sonic is one step closer to the end. And the dying flame on his chest symbolize the weakening of the fire golem as you defeat him little by little. Very good song.

6) No Way Through
Pirates ahoy! I love the riffs in this song. But that being said, the song gives a sense of adventure like being a pirate. Sure, it is not no Pirates of the Carribean, but it describes that the ocean is nothing but emptiness waiting to be filled. Luckily Sonic shows up to fill the nothing to try to possess a World Ring. And it is also one of my two favorite stages in the game, spare me.

5) Unawakening Float
The final frontier, the source of all, this music sets up for the fight to come: Sonic vs Erazor. A very mystical theme, this makes me send chills down my spine when I listen to it. It describes the race against time with Sonic and his timely death wish. Also makes known if all that he is doing will truly fix the Arabian Nights. My favorite stage to take the icing on the cake, it has got to be one of my favorite stage theme with a perfect setting wrapped around it.

4) Blue On The Run
I do not know what the music has to do with fighting a sea monster, but hell, I am in love with this song. It again explains the race against time and that Sonic should just keep running. And that is exactly what he lives for. The sense of tension and epicness is beyond belief. Very awesome track.

3) It Has Come To ThisErazor Fight (not mine)
The time has come. Sonic vs Erazor. While the fight is good for the most part, the song is what builds this fight. It has come to this; all or nothing; if Sonic fails, then the whole world is doomed. This fight matters! God, I love playing this boss over and over again. It is perfectly set and is a good fight itself.

2) Let The Speed Mend It
I love this. Quite possibly one of my very stage tracks in any Sonic game. I do not understand what Sonic games and first stage love has to do with any logic, but it shows. It tells us about how the Arabian Nights have changed within a blink of an eye. Take the speed and let it carry you. It goes with Blue On the Run track; just keep on running.

1) Seven Rings in Hand
With this track, it is the setting for the whole game. And what a setting it is. The struggle to fix a world of stories and myths and that Sonic is beyond what fate gives him. Nothing bothers him and he knows that he can fix this and will stop at nothing to do so. Bliz was right, Steve Conte from Runblebee needs to get some more limelight with Sega because his does an awesome job. And with the game and this track, matches perfectly with the game.

As you can tell, I like this game a lot. It is vastly underrated and while people may fight between this and Black Knight to which is the superior, Secret Rings will always win with me with the environment and the music that mixes in with it.

The more lists and the more games I get, the better. We seriously need to break up all of these multi-way ties going on.

Also, I'm going to count your 6.5 entry merely as an honorable mention. I should probably specify only whole numbers when ordering your lists. xP

Alright, let's give Sonic CD a go. These are the American tracks only (Gems doesn't allow you to switch between the two versions) but I may make a separate list for the Japanese track if I ever get a chance to listen to it - if I can, that is.

Sonic CD (SEGA CD)

1. Sonic Boom; I heard this song before Gems Collection came out and I even got a chance to play CD. It's catchy, upbeat, and describes Sonic very well.

2. Palmtree Panic Past; Somehow, it just fits with the stage. Btw, anyone else get a prehistoric vibe from said stage?

3. Final Fever; Holy...this is just creepy. There's a moment of despair with this tune, something you hardly ever here in games from the Classic Era

4. Collision Chaos Present; Face it, this stage was a bit of a pain to get through. At least the music's awesome. That should count for something, no?

5. Quartz Quadrant Bad Future; I don't know what I like about this song? Is it the guitar riffs? Yeah, definitely the guitar riffs.

6. Wacky Workbench Past; This tune actually DOES sound 'wacky'. Not kidding.

7. Wacky Workbench Bad Future; And parts of this version have what I would term as 'dark humor'.

8. Collision Chaos Good Future; Peaceful and upbeat at the same time. How that's even possible is beyond me, but this tune pulled it off.

9. Quartz Quadrant Present; More guitar riffs, yay!

10. Collision Chaos Bad Future And yet more guitar riffs. Because guitar riffs are awesome, no? The tune itself is quite creepy too.

And if I could, I'd put the Game Over music in there. Seriously, that is the best Game Over music in any game to ever come out - because when you hear those mocking laughs, and that creepy as hell organ, it doesn't seem like 'oh, you lost but hey, you have another chance'. No sir. It seems like the game actually IS over and you, my friend, have failed us all...
