Strange, isn't it?

Because of how realistic the settings of most of the modern Sonic games are, there is almost never any confusion over what type of place they're supposed to represent. However, the same cannot be said for the older games. There are several zones in them that don't seem to have a specific theme or connection between their gimmicks. Some examples are Spring Yard and Starlight from Sonic 1 and Collision Chaos from Sonic CD (no, I don't find Quartz Quadrant confusing, as the name, the crystals in the background, and several of the gimmicks make it clear that it's a mine). There are also many stages with out-of-place names, such as Labyrinth, Metropolis, and Marble Garden, or out-of-place gimmicks, such as Marble, Hill Top, and Wacky Workbench. All in all, the levels themselves in the classics, while very enjoyable to play, seem rather loosely defined and not very plausible as even fictional environments. What do you make of this? Are the zones easier to understand for you? Are you confused about areas that I'm not? And was making the stages the way they are a clever idea by the designers to make them more interesting, or a mistake? |

I think the most ambiguous that the (main) classic games ever got was with a few levels from S1 and CD, namely Spring Yard Zone and Collision Chaos respectively. You can argue both of them are city-esque or kinda like the Boondocks, what with forested and mountain features in their backgrounds, but they have no real defining features of a specific theme aside from pinball-y things. However, Starlight Zone is less confusing; you can clearly see brickwork around the area, and the metallic beams and roads you run on indicate construction or even a highway. If anything, it is the most contemporary city stage in the classics. The rest of the stages don't bother me. If anything, I find as Sonic Team got a handle on the hardware and started giving the games a narrative, the detail and subsequently the realism of each title got upped considerably, and it was only a matter of time before this translated into what we got in Adventure. Seriously, check out the foliage of Mushroom Hill and compare it to the "foliage" of Green Hill to see what I'm talking about. |

I object to your claims

No, never felt that any of the classic stages were confusing. With the exception of any stages with pinball elements. Where the hell did THOSE come from?=/ |

My! That's a pretty snazzy performance there!
|
Hmm, I never put much thought into it. And since we are on the topic of it, agreeded on Collision Chaos and Spring Yard. I suppose Marble is a toss up, because it feels that if it was made in 3D, it might be a sort of shiny tile place due to all of the underground blocks and passages. Emerald Hill is half weird, there are no emeralds there!!! (joke).

At first, Stardust Speedway was a tad bit confusing, but Collision Chaos just takes the cake. |

What about the Special Stages? I mean, some maze thing with fish and birds flashing in the background? A half-pipe that can be any color of the rainbow and has bombs planted all over it? What is up with that?
