Break out the L-word. The other L-word.

Just heard about this this morning, and thought I'd share it with you before I have to go. Thoughts?

That's it, i'm not giving a shit about this anymore.

First SOPA, then PIPA, then the US Goverment itself took an act in this, now ACTA.
America starts to turn really persistent on the internet and i start to really hate it.

That's the same as what you have to do on youtube when putting copyright music onto a video. Stating that the music is yours that you have bought legally to use. But the thing with copyright and such laws there are so many grey areas it's unreal!

At the moment there are a few ISP's here in the U.K that have prosecuted and send warnings to customers who download illegal files y'know the usual music and such so the system is kind of already here and in force.

Like anything the authorities clamp down on, a new better way around their forceful ways will be found it always does. Virus software is a classic example, new ones comes out every year and get updates every few weeks it gives hackers a target, beat the system. There can be all sorts of blocks on the internet but the system will be beat :o)

ACTA isn't nearly as bad as SOPA.. the recording industries are complaining it doesn't go far enough due to it not going too far. It's not great but it's not a radical change.

ACTA is a multi-national effort, you can't just be all like "Baw Amerikuh".

It is the United Nations and WTO behind this one.

Oh, I missed something then.

Even though America started this whole thing..

Why are a bunch of old people who know nothing about the internet trying to destroy it anyway? Reminds me of "Stop Having Fun" guys. Effectively getting rid of the internet can destroy a shitton of jobs out there.

What is all this!? Is there no end? I think if this goes into action, every internet user on earth should FLOOD the internet with copy written material. Just whatever they can. I want to see the government imprison EVERYONE that uses the internet. Good luck with that I say!

I highly doubt that if it's passed it'll stay passed personally. I mean that isn't a reason to not fight it with everything you have, but if they keep this up they're gonna get worse problems.

I mean, Anonymous alone would probably stop pulling punches all together. I mean the governments of the world have put most of their economic infastructure on the internet, they're almost totally dependant on it now. And now they're angering the people who could actually destroy what's left of the world economy, anonymous. They could start wars with information they dig up.

Not to mention the countless people who will lose jobs over this and even WORSE goodwill between the governments of the world and their citizens.

Suddenly a part of me wishes Eggman would just exist and take over the world, he'd probably actually do a better job at governing us than the freakin' politicians do. Seriously, when you take the insane scientist based on world domination over the guys already dominating the world, something is very very wrong.

Even if ACTA gets put into place, they would have to pass additional laws, but I'm ticked off beyond belief about the fact that the gov't will be able to ACTUALLY look into your personal items on your computer and sue you for it.

@Chaos- ..Not the Government, the world ISPs are given the power through ACTA.. United Nations Legislation. It gives Comcast, Verizon, Qwest, Bell, AT&T.. whoever provides your services the ability to access your machine upon suspicion.

The issue I take is that the ISPs, since they are not a part of state/federal law enforcement could presumably do this at will in America, bypassing the Warrant process that would be typical.. so I could see that legislation raising constitutional issues in the court of the United States as it is giving private corporations spying power. As for the other nations for which this law would take affect I can't say, I'm not aware of their political situations, but it could put some neutral nations like Sweden and Norway to put pressure into clamping down on piracy based inside their borders since they seem to be the real prime real estate for piracy bases. I don't know how the UN legislation would specifically affect those nations.

I didn't know too much about ACTA except it was bad. But... Allowing ISPs to access my computer at will? NO. ЭТО БУЛЛШИТ! At least the government is motivated (at least partially) by public interest. The private guys being able to do that... Ugh.
Enough of my political agenda.
We can all agree this is bad. You gotta hand it to them, those censorship guys really know how to unite a nation. I suppose I could say this is all a plan to distract us from some other bill that they're trying to get past our radar. I'm to preoccupied with this topic at hand anyway.

So, where does it say ISPs can search your computer anyway?

Better yet, how WOULD they manage to do it? I mean, they would need physical access to the machine to search it, unless they manage to dupe their customers into installing a program, but that would only work for users of specific OSes. It's kinda impossible in practice, except for physically searching the machine.
