WARNING: There may be spoilers if you haven't read the older issues of the Sonic Archie comics (50 and below). There will be no spoiler tags. (Because I'm a jerk)

Around the time the Archie Sonic comics reached the 40th issue, up to about the 50th issue, they began what was called the "Endgame" arc. A final battle of sorts with the Freedom Fighter's biggest foe, Robotnik. In the published version of the comic, Sally's rope is cut and she is believed to have fallen to her death. Sonic and Robotnik have an epic battle and of course our blue blur wins in the end. Sonic discovers that Sally does indeed survive, but the fall has caused to to go into a coma. In a fairy tale ending to the arc, Sonic gives her a kiss, she awakens and the Freedom Fighters enjoy their victory.

But, BUT, BUUUUUT... this was not the original concept of the Endgame Arc! The original design was for Sally to die, but whether from some SEGA intervention or Ken Pender's being convinced by a fellow writer, the story was changed to the fairy tale ending we see today. Then reasons for Sally's death originally?

Speculation only, but from what I heard, Ken felt there was nowhere further Sally could grow and develop as a character. With the return of King Acorn, she was no longer necessary as Freedom Fighter leader, thus could be considered 'dead weight'. Also, her death would drive Sonic to breaking point- enough to challenge Robotnik head-on. We know he has morals as a hero, but with the loss of one of his best friends, the morals are lost too, and did not have to hold back when confronting his greatest enemy.

So, my what if for you all is: What if the Endgame Arc had continued on its original course and Sally actually died?
What would the storyline be like from issue 51 onward? Would it be a bit darker? Would there be a turning point where things got "brighter"?
What impact would the death have on all the characters? I.E. the Freedom Fighters and Sonic? Would they all change (for better or worse)
What repercussions would the death have had on more recent Arcs? Would said arcs still happen? Would someone take Sally's place if she played an important role?

Additionally to consider (and for giggles):
Do you agree with the sentiments that Sally was developed well enough and ergo had nothing else that could be added?
Would the comics be more about Sonic and Mina then?
We know some people dislike Sally for being a love interest, and a mary sue, and other things. But in a world where Sally's death actually happened and Sonic Mina became the couple of the comics, would we all be sitting around listening to SonMina haters and the same gripes we hear about Sally?
