How to spur activity?

A trial of a shoutbox/Shack shutdown should happen for a couple of weeks - long enough for people to get used to it and offer constructive feedback. I say a couple because everyone's back at school which leaves only weekends, and if given just one weekend to play with the new setup then people don't get a realistic chance to sleep on the changes and reflect on whether it's a good or bad thing.
Besides, what's 2 weeks in the scale of forever?

There's plenty of discussion to be had about the entire franchise-both old and new games- from a theoretical standpoint. Even with no real news of any upcoming games on the horizon, SSMB's Sonic section is still thriving because people aren't just making conversation about the bare technical discoveries of everything in the vein of: "Hey, this game has left over data, ain't that cool?" Rather, they ask questions about how certain game mechanics can function in different environments or what entirely new mechanics can be brought to the table in the future.

Make a cheaply-done graph in Microsoft paint or grab a video of some cancelled Spider-Man game to help visually explain an idea you had for some branching level design, and that's an automatic head-turner right there; people will be interested and respond with either praise or criticism, and subsequently debate goes from there.

Remember: that's only game mechanics. Story lines, character development, depth, and personalities, art styles, music motifs and theme songs, voice acting, etc.: These are all broad, valid and thought-provoking discussions to have fun with. There's a ton of things I'd certainly like to talk about and wouldn't mind making topics for, at the very least to see if people here would be interested in actually- you know- sincerely talking about them.

Also, for the people who had ideas for Clans, so do I. We should congregate sometime. =P

Some very good points, Bliz! I wouldn't mind talking about the art style because I'm passionate about that; I always get discouraged by myself, though, because I have no artistic expertise so I might give off the impression I have no idea what I'm talking about.
Also, making pictures and graphs are more complicated than they should be with no attachments in SB or temporary internal image hosting.

We have a chatroom on Skype, guys. It gets some activity, but not nearly as much as Shack.

And I personally like The Shack, even though I'm not a big frequenter. And the problem for me about the Sonic sections of the forum is that there's currently no discussion I want to partake in. There's probably the same problem for others.
i'm actually really sorry bout this

Then why must it be left to the same old people to create the discussion/conversation? If there's nothing here to discuss, have a read through old threads and see if they introduce something that you could talk about with retrspective, or maybe figure out something nobody else has.

Not just aimed at you, but every single bugger who's cried about this exact sort of thing over the years :P

My own opinion on this matter. Late but if I may. My own toots on the situation

I kimda have to agree with others on 'not much interest' in the Sonic sections. I mean, I try to post Sonic news from my twitter feed and discuss but I'm not all that interested in discussing 'Most ____ character/moment' or odd bugs and glitches of the sort. Personally(I made sure to read the entire topic before posting fyi), I think the not enough activity in the Sonic sections is the usual he's struggling idea. I mean, I know some people here aren't total Sonic fans nowadays but still love going to this forum. Gotta remember Sonic doesn't have a cartoon now and comics in general are dying out as well. :V

I'm against a complete removal of the Shack as well. I go on and off of the place as I get busy, but it's a nice place to go to for some casual talking with people. Some craziness I admit but I still like it. But it seems it's decided that removing it won't do much?

I like Maelic's ideas too. Clans and stuff sound really neat. *nod*
Also, since we're talking about activity(not sure if it's related to this subject) but if we want to spice up activity, whatever happened to the idea Ninty, Sony, etc., boards where a few people can constantly post news topic about said companies? I thought we discussed that once before but dunno what happened to it.

And for RPing, well... we had this new tournament but it's kinda... well... :V (No offense, MoD and D-Metal).
And I work pretty hard on my RPs, people. ;-; I'm busy with many things now, but I try to make them as interesting and original as possible when I do make one. ;-;).

Yeah, thats my own thoughts on the matter. Apologies if I missed or got the wrong idea or something. :V

Whew. Writing this on a 3DS took rather long. D:

Listen to you own advice, Metallix. Don't add too many forums to the board, that's how forums die.

I like what the shack is supposed to be, I don't like the monster it has become. It's not a place to just casually talk about your day or whatnot, it's now just spam and even discussions that NEED to be in their own respective topics to be discussed. I feel like people are lazy, it's not that there isn't anything they want to discuss it's that they only look at the first topic or don't even go into those forums at all. Maybe a complete forum restructuring is in order? Like changing the complete layout?

And dude, one of the sections that's really dead is the game section. Adding forums just for Sony, Microsoft, Nintendo, etc isn't going to spur any activity there. No one talks about ANY of it. Unless it's Pokemon and Pokemon discussion has died almost all together as well.

I won't be doing that unless it's supported/has interest. On a side-note, this is just a random thought I had, but I find the whole "nothing that our members are interested in discussing" logic utter fail. If that were the case, I guess this forum is just full of dull people not interested in anything? The fact that there are always tons of people in the Shack and it takes hours for someone to reply here is proof enough that that idea is not true.

So... what's the plan now? I noticed the casino section is gone.

EDIT: Err, wait, this is weird. The Casino Park section is gone from the normal menu, but when I go and check the online users list and see somebody on the place and click on it, the place is normal like always. Did the place move somewhere in a subforum and my eyes are not seeing it? Or is this just me or something?

EDIT 2: Never mind. Found it. But just... why the move?

It's not gone, it's just been moved for some reason. Metallix appears to be doing one of his random shuffles.

You'll find it in Section V - Other Amenities. Basically right at the bottom of the forum.

As for spurring activity I really don't know what you can do. People will only want to talk about stuff they want to talk about and even then you can only carry a discussion on something so far before its tailwind patters out and the S.S. Topic comes to a halt.

Also I do enjoy what the Shack is. Sometimes people talk causally about their day, other times they just let their hair down and go nuts. Sometimes we all need a place to do that and frankly there just isn't anywhere else in the forum where you can do that without getting in trouble. Sometimes discussions do take place in there, but they usually only last a few posts and then are never brought up again. It's sometimes view as a general discussion of whatever is on your mind at the time I guess. I'm sure the poster who started it probably didn't even mean for a discussion to come from their statement in the first place. Sometimes it just happens, y'know?

Anyway, tangent over. Apologies for not actually being of any help here. ^^;

EDIT: Looks like you found it in the time I was posting all... that. Whoo me. xD;

I felt it fit better in "other amenities" rather than "community parlor" since it's just spam. It was moved from Planet Mobius because no one was doing Sonic-themed games and community parlor was just the wrong place to put it. Funny how it was only moved a few inches down and it still got lost. lol

I realize people will only talk about what they want to talk about and that is apparently spam. I mean I liked the idea for the shack until it devolved into this "post 50 pictures with no words" kinda place... Whatever... Honestly if we removed the casino park and the activity from that section, this place would be a ghost town.

50 pictures is a bit of an exaggeration (although it can feel like this at times when quote trees happen). But sometimes you just need to bring the lulz so image macros start popping up all over the place. Could probably make a game of it if we really wanted I guess. *shrug*

Besides some... "hidden" thoughts, I've got a few that no one brought up:

Name changes. There's no limit. Because everyone changes their names so often and all the time, I've never felt like I was in a place where I know NO ONE like this forum. I'm on one other forum that allows name changes, but they limit it to once every six months.

A user name is, well, a name, and should be treated as such, not something that can be used to make some sort of joke or pointless statement.

Besides that, I get a general hostile feeling from the forum. It's not welcoming, nor accepting. I've seen on more than one occasion of members flaming -- actual flaming, not just being rude-ish -- others, and being allowed to.

Maelic

I honestly hate the Shack. I can't even follow it, much less understand their inside jokes.

I second this. It never even has an actual discussion going on, and if you're not being an idiot and joking around, you're told to get out and stop being serious. If I recall correctly, a MODERATOR told me that in the Shack, or a moderator was backing someone up on that statement.

The most active part of the forum is the unfriendliest part of the forum.

Now, if we got rid of the shack completely and introduced a REAL chat thread that required content and some actual acceptiveness of new/rare posters, go ahead. I encourage it. All the Shack is is spam.

Maelic

Frankly, though, I don't think I've clicked on the Roleplay Garden since I've been back.
It's the sluggishly-paced and amateur-drowned Fan Character Shrine that gets me.
I don't know what it is, but something's strangling the creativity in the generations below mine.

I agree with this. However, sluggish and amateur goes to the RP section as well, IMO. Private RPs and one liner, plotless, crazy RPs in the Starter/Beginner RP section are the most active. Hunting down a private RP partner can be tiresome, and a public RP in the Advanced section isn't even worth trying to start. None of them ever last. Ever.

Angel Peach

We have a chatroom on Skype, guys. It gets some activity, but not nearly as much as Shack.

Unfortunately, it's pretty much the Shack, but without rules. It's spammy, people get butthurt, you're not really talked to if you're not a Shack regular, etc.

And then the "Classy Shack" chat is hardly talked in.

And then there's also the whole thing about it not being part of the forum.

This forum is hostile? News to me. I've found this is one of the most friendly forums... if not the most friendly Sonic one I know of.

Name changes I can sort of agree on, but it can be fun for these theme months we're doing. Besides most of us leave pretty glaring hints as to our usual identities around here. Mine's in my sig and if you hang around the Shack enough you tend to know that I'm known as 'Chaos TH' almost universally. |P

As for the Shack, It's not meant for actual discussion. It says right in the first post it's for chatting casually about your day... but nowadays it does get derailed by shacknanigans. But really is that such a bad thing? It's great having a place to just chill in without worrying about the rules some. Might not be for you but a lot of us do enjoy it. If you want actual discussion about something make a topic about it. Then you don't have to worry about insanity getting in the way of your serious talking time.

And yes, being overly serious in the Shack is generally frowned upon since it's a place to unwind rather than have heated discussions about whatever the issue is at the time. Doesn't mean you have to be fully zany, but do keep a light hearted approach to the place, okay?

Also you'd get in-jokes if you were actually, y'know, in the shack more. ;P

On the matter of Skype, what do you mean you don't get talked to if you're not a regular? You get talked to if you talk in the chat. Simple as that. If you keep your mouth shut of course nobody will respond to you. :I

... is that everything I wanted to say? I can't remember. Eh, close enough.

~FIN~
