How to spur activity?

Ok so as the whole Zone 4 topic kinda ventured off-topic, I got to thinking... Well the main reason I tested out the design of columned sections on the front page was just to see if it worked better and would help with making things more accessible.I'm still not sure, I am probably going to remove it.

However there is one thing that it seems everyone hates and that is change. Personally I don't like stagnation and while change just for the sake of change isn't good, I feel like we are not perfect and there are ways we can improve. Changing the way the forum is structured was not just for the sake of change either, I felt it was better organized which is why it was experimented with.

A few things I've noticed on this forum is if it's not Role Playing or spam topics, it pretty much goes out to pasture and dies. Our forum is like 80% spam and 20% real discussion. Hence why the Casino Park has nearly half of all of the posts on this board and why the "what are you *insert* now" topics flourish. I don't mind the spam and if people want to spam then all the power to them but I really think we need to spur more discussion on this board and try to even out the spam and real topics. I think it would be great if all of the forums on this board had posts from this month on the first page at least.

Now my question is what do you think we could do? If this ends up with me just going around posting a bunch of stuff then so be it! But I think brainstorming is for the best and we can come up with ideas others would have not thought about on their own. One thing is we used to have a team of "newscasters" to post news to help discussion but that died out. There's an idea, now discuss!

Break out the L-word. The other L-word.
I honestly see no problems regarding activity on the board as of right now. And as they say, if it ain't broke, don't fix it. Trying to force certain kinds of activity will never get anywhere. And if only certain people try to increase activity in certain places on the board, it will seem awkward and forced as well. People are going to post in topics that are interesting to them, and not all topics are going to be interesting to everybody. Besides that, it's fairly obvious that the "spam" sections of the board will get more posts than the "real discussion" sections: real discussion posts tend to be longer and fewer, and spam posts tend to be shorter and much, much more abundant. Spam posts, by definition (by that I mean, based on what you're calling "spam" posts), are posts that have little meaning and are posted very frequently and in vast numbers. IE, everything in Casino Park, and the pinned "What are you ____ now" topics in the Entertainment Cafe.

tl;dr, there ain't nothin' broke, so don't fix it. This is just the way it is.

I still can't use this.

I personally don't think overall forum activity is down but rather concentrated in one area. If you want to spread the activity more evenly, you first have to address the spam forum. I've noted this time and time again, but when given the opportunity to spam freely, communities will do so to the point that they strangle more meaningful discussion because more meaningful discussion is less fun. This is compounded by the fact that this is a Sonic based forum, and generally speaking, any topic that's more thoughtful than "What's your favorite/least favorite game/level/character/etc.?" will almost inevitably have someone or two claiming the subject isn't worth discussing in any great or heated detail simply because, "Dude, it's a blue hedgehog; stop taking it so seriously."

But assuming you did hide or, Heaven forbid, delete the Casino Park, the questions become where do your Casino people go? Will this inevitably spur discussion? I think it will push some people to other areas, perhaps as you mentioned the roleplay forum since, again, the big thing here is that people want to have fun above all else. On the other hand, others who feel particularly entitled to a spam forum will rage and leave outright. A drop in activity is most likely a cost you'll have to bite the bullet on if you're dedicated enough to spurring better conversation. And remember, while people will leave, others will come in to take their places and fill the new mold you've made. I know this- I was in the thick of the deletion of SSMB's spam forum, and they're pretty much better off for it.

Another problem, I think, is just the lack of attractiveness of your main feature- the Sonic forums. To me, without any new games on the horizon (although even then, the hype for Generations here after the City Escape reveals was disappointing), they feel full of the same regurgitated favorites topics over and over again coupled with a few obviously-untrue rumors that make my head spin. No one wants to keep discussing that all the time, but at the same time, you potentially have on your hands the culture I mentioned in the beginning. Combating this will take work- both in being more selective about what kinds of topics people can make whilst making an effort to make and actually respond to interesting topics.

tl;dr-- Your main problem's the Casino. Hide it for awhile and see what happens.

1) Perhaps you think it's fine because you don't frequent the sections that need a little boosting?

2) There are plenty of ways to encourage growth on a forum without it feeling forced. You do realize small forums have to encourage discussion on their forums, right? I don't see why you are against it, how could it possibly hurt to have more diverse activity in this forum? 1a) I personally think it's all of those topics like "what are you doing now" and "the shack" that are taking away discussion. People talk about things in there that they could make topics for.

3) How are we ever going to attract new people who are interested in what this board has to offer if the activity is limited in those sections? I've had several people complain that no one responded to their topics(ironically those complaints went unnoticed as well lol). That's not healthy at all for a forum and I think it's time to start advertising.

4) I just feel like people will look at this site and not want going to join because the majority of activity is in spam. Other Sonic forums have more discussion than we do I feel as well.

Well that is a big problem! I agree. Deleting the spam forum would pretty much have half of our members quit with a good 20% more enraged.

If that is the only option, I'd say we need to view this forum like it was in 2007. Not a big forum, not a tiny forum, but a relatively small forum and we need to go advertise and spur as much activity as we can. When I first started this forum I made a bunch of topics and, so they didn't look dead, I'd post in them with various other fake accounts.

Granted, while this isn't my forum and subsequently I'm not afraid at all to slash and burn things, you should treat the Casino like a glass-cased powder keg. One difference between our situation and the SSMB's was that they already had a large install base of posters that were likely to post mature content and debate about it for extended periods of time. From my viewpoint, we really don't have that here for several reasons I'm too lazy to go into. Ergo, you should probably focus on making the other sections more inviting to actually post in for the people you're looking to attract along with considerations about gimping the Casino (don't delete the section- ever). This goes back to my point of making topics and an honest effort to post in and debate them.

I'll be there every step of the way...
Whoa...
I didn't see what went on with Zone 4 today.
Damn, I'm just out of the loop.
Personally, I find it disheartening to be on here at say, 10 PM every now and then, browsing for the day's most active topics as everyone slowly fades into the night... And I see most forums marked "Today, 4:10 PM" or "Yesterday 7:15 PM." Then I see the Casino Park having a post one minute ago... For an hour straight.
I honestly hate the Shack. I can't even follow it, much less understand their inside jokes.
I've not got much faith in the Sonic community these days; moreover, things seemed much more colorful back around 2008 or so. This forum is booming compared to some of things and places I've seen floating around the net... It's pretty booming, either way. But you know, one thing that made this site so appealing in the first place was its creative market--everyone was making fancharacters and roleplaying so avidly and, often, with a great amount of skill. I remember a time when we'd have a new sprite comic series released every couple days. I haven't seen a spitesheet since I've been back... Or that time I came for Christmas. Or before I left before that.
Frankly, though, I don't think I've clicked on the Roleplay Garden since I've been back.
It's the sluggishly-paced and amateur-drowned Fan Character Shrine that gets me.
I don't know what it is, but something's strangling the creativity in the generations below mine.
Luckily, discussion seems to be up and more intelligent... Just slow.

So, I gotta say, Bliz has a point. Tinker with Casino Park, but subtly. It needs some treatment.
Wish I had more to say than a nostalgia-tinted rant as to how to fix the creative and discussion sections,
But, lemme think...

Maybe the staff and more experienced members could collaborate on posting a huge series of discussion topics, fan character bios, artwork, creative advice, roleplays, etc.? Not too much work, but just some stuff that's friendly and flashy. The activity would surely draw attention...

EDIT: Let me heavily emphasize that I'm not bashing this place for being inactive. This is a great forum. I'm just suggesting that forum activity seems to have slightly decreased to my understanding and that there may be ways to help that activity back up and beyond.
ANOTHER EDIT: And let me say that I don't mean to be a hypocrite; I know I haven't done anything creative since I've been back... I just noted that it used to be in the very nature of the younger individuals to pump out every half-assed idea that pops in their head.

This is....honest a pretty good idea. I think the RP and fan character sections could especially benefit.

1) Perhaps you think it's fine because you don't frequent the sections that need a little boosting?

2) There are plenty of ways to encourage growth on a forum without it feeling forced. You do realize small forums have to encourage discussion on their forums, right? 1) If they need boosting, it probably means that not many people frequent them. That's the whole point.

2) The difference is, we're certainly no small forum. We don't need to encourage or regulate posting since our members take care of it by themselves. 1a) Topics can't take away discussion. It's the members who are responsible for posting who take away discussion from other sections. Take it up with them, not their preferred poison.

3) Two things about this: one, it's not like we are going through some sort of drought of few sign-ups and new members that stay. Hell, those rates are probably higher than they've ever been. It's simply not a problem.

4) Well, that's obviously not a problem, because as I have said, it's not like we very rarely get new members anymore.

Secondly, whether or not someone's topic doesn't get posted is really not you're problem. It's the member's problem. If people don't want to post in a topic, well, you can't very well force them to because the OP got their delicate sensibilities offended. Hell, if you want, go ahead, post in those postless topics if you pity the poor saps enough. That's all that can be rationally done about the "issue."

So at this point, you're saying that deleting our spam section would be bad because a hella lot of people would leave the board, but we need to remove it to encourage replying in other parts of the board. News flash: if your members quit, there won't be anyone to "spread out" the posts.

I think that we should view this forum as it is now, not as it was in 2007. Besides that, we don't REALLY need to get as active as we possibly can, because, well, we're already about as active as we're gonna be. There's no point in forcing activity that no one really cares for.

With this in particular:

So are you recommending that we lie to guests who have become interested in our forum, so that they'll join, and then realize that we're not actually as active as we've led them to believe, and probably end up leaving as a result? Essentially, lying to get more new members, but in the long run, getting very few members who wish to stay.

We're not trying to increase activity. We're trying to move it to other areas. One must wonder what the point of a forum being Sonic-themed is if the most interesting activity in said forum is spam games, the overwhelming majority of which have absolutely nothing to do with the franchise in question in the first place.

But... Why not increase activity while you're at it?
I don't think you're going to successfully redistribute a population of people who are here almost solely for the purpose of spamming a single topic.
I think the strategy would be to lure who you can away and simultaneously increase advertising or whatever to try to balance potential member loss and inactivity, and hopefully more than just make up for what might be lost.

Which is literally what always happens when you block access to a spam forum; always. But this isn't a problem if you can keep the majority of people on board as well as continue gaining numbers. Remember: This community doesn't exist in a vacuum.

I never minced words about the possibility of removing the Casino. I admitted you will not get every single person on board with this idea. But, we nonetheless agree that the Casino, or more specifically the Shack, is basically an activity magnet and it generally always has been. You can incease membership and lure a few current members to other areas, but there's no guarantee your new members won't get into the Shack itself if it's still there ready and waiting for spammy-spam-spam time.

Remember: We've attempted cross-forum roleplay tournaments and even the work involved in that wasn't enough to change the conversational dynamic of this forum. I really do like your prior idea about having more notable members go all out and post awesome topics, but at the same time, I don't believe you can really begin to solve this problem (if you believe the Casino's a problem) if you're unwilling to limit Casino access considerably.

I think part of the problem is the, ahem, content of some of the topics that have come up recently. I just speaking for myself here, but I seriously have no desire to post in a thread titled; 'who is the hottest sonic character'. I just don't. And don't remind me of the RP sections - I used to be very active there and now I'm lucky to find a topic that remotely interests me. Of course, the RP Garden does get a whole bunch of activity, but the quality of some of the topics and the lack of Advanced RPs lately might turn some people away.

The thing is, I think we'd benefit from having better...content for the topics. I'm not talking about us having huge, Bliz-style posts (sorry Bliz. |3), I'm just talking about coming up with topics we can have mature discussions in. Hey, if nothing else, they'd get our minds going.=/

Of course, limit Casino accessibility.
But, I'm just saying, ya know, you're gonna lose people over that, probably.
Not necessarily people, though, but more notably, you'll be losing activity.

I'm just voting on advertising (preferably somehow with a more intellectual demographic in mind), making awesome topics, and making Casino suffer a bit.

EDIT: Well, maybe making Casino suffer a lot.

Well I am not going to remove it straight out, however, by what you are saying it really wouldn't matter. You essentially agree with me that things aren't as active as the spam sections so if they left all we would have is a reduction of spam, it wouldn't likely effect the rest of the board that much.

That said, I really would like to put a posting limit on the shack. People pump 100s of posts in there a day sometimes and it really wasn't intended for that at all.

I really agree with Maelic... Back in 2008, despite being smaller, we had a more robust community. There was still spam but more people were involved.... The way I view this forum is, aside from two spots, it's not any more active than other Sonic forums(barring the completely dead ones).

I like making lots of topics and trying that way but can you honestly lure people out of the shack? I mean people are ALWAYS in there doing nothing that posting a bunch of spam. I was really upset when I wasn't even able to close it and replace it with a shoutbox. It was then that I realized it had gotten too big for its own good.
