So I finally scrounged together the money to buy a laptop with a lot of work and a little bit of Christmas moneys.
Specifically, I'm trying to find a laptop that's good with gaming, in other words the specs would be somewhere around:

At least 2.20 GHz dual-core processor
CD or even DVD drive.
Good Video card.
Most importantly, durable and with a good cooling system.

The last laptop I had was a Toshiba Netbook, which wasn't really all that great for gaming, and had random freezes. I don't need a good hard drive, or even any good drives, and I don't care about webcams or battery life.
I know that around this time is when people get new laptops, so I'd like to know if there are any laptops you guys, from personal experience, recommend I check out or avoid?

I bought my girlfriend a HP Pavilion G6, all it really needs is a graphics card of some sort to improve the built-in chipset compliment the pretty decent CPU and it's good to go for some years. In the UK I picked it up for about £430, might be a little out of your budget but if you can scrimp the extra pennies then I assure you it's a worthwhile investment.

The most important thing you need to factor in is GBs of RAM.. 4 should be the bare minimum since operating systems take more, but also optimize it better these days. If it is under 4, it won't last.. 5-6 is great.

You say Toshiba isn't your first choice but they are really one of the best bangs for your buck as this list of best 2012 laptops under $700 would attest. Acer is pretty solid too for what you get for what you spend but I will always recommend Toshiba and HP before anything else.. the primary brand I make sure everyone avoids is Sony, because you get horrible specs for what you're spending on any computer they make.

I'm not laughing AT you. I'm laughing at how you managed to bring Sony into this laptop thing. All kidding aside, thank you for that list; I specifically liked the first one.
A laptop with 3.0 GHz sounds great, and the specs finally tell me how much memory the video card has!

No it has nothing to do with the PS3, I'm not anti Sony (or anti-Playstation) or else I wouldn't actually own a Playstation or look hard at Sony televisions. So my preferences as far as console gaming go don't carry over into anything else.

Sony Laptops are literally crap for what you're paying, look at the specs for their laptops and compare them to similarly priced regular priced (no sales) laptops.. try and tell me you won't be underwhelmed.

Pint of real ale please squire!
Got a Dell recently for little money and from friends that have had them recommend them, as do i, nice laptops for the spec and money.

Not sure if they have it in the states but in the U.K i got a refurbished one from Dell. Inspiron laptop, 3gb ram, AMD V160 2.4GHz processor and 350GB odd hard drive for £215 posted ($329). When i say refurbished, they are more like 2nds that don't quite meet perfect standards but are brand new. Mine only has a couple of chips in the red plastic cover on top of the screen caseing which in my ownership of laptops happens anyway lol!.

Acer also have good options too and not heard too bad a review about them for the price, maybe also worth a look?
