Lava Reef Act 1
|
Yup, it finally happened, I purchased and played through the entirety of my most hated Sonic game to date. So the question stands: is it still my most hated Sonic game? Yes. Yes it is. First, I want to discuss what has always been and still is my biggest problem: the controls. The complete absence of momentum was more than just an annoyance like it was in the demo. It was an obstruction and got in the way of platforming and/or led to quite a few cheap deaths. I would honestly enjoy this game in its entirety, if even to a small extent, if I could rely on Sonic to keep moving when I take my thumb off of the d-pad. Next, there are some stages where there is a complicated puzzle or platforming area, (i.e. Casino Street Act 2 and Lost Labyrinth Act 2) and it will have you stuck there or a good five minutes or so wondering what you should do and, once you figure it out or look up a video like I did in one case, (which you should NEVER have to do) once you DO figure it out, trying to not screw up. These scenarios will almost always lead you to a Time Up, but this is really only a problem on your first time playing. These are my only two huge complaints with the game, and even then the second one is temporary. The music is bland and repetitive, (save for a few Lost Labyrinth and Mad Gear tracks, in which I actually found myself surprised to find music in this game that sounded decent) and the levels are all reorganized versions of zones from the previous classic games, but you all were aware of this. I could forgive all of this if the game were fun to play, but it isn't, so it just adds to an already negative bar instead of slightly lowering a positive one. The only part in the game I found myself enjoying was Lost Labyrinth. And even then it only lasted up until Act 3 and then the boss showed up and I was bored to death for the rest of the game again until I got to the overly frustrating, yet strangely enjoyable final boss. The fight was literally blood-pumping for me, and the fact that I was playing Judas Priest's Painkiller album instead of the default 30-second loop synthesizer trash after the first few deaths probably helped. So at least about twenty percent of the game was enjoyable. I... guess that's something? Overall I'd give the game a 5/10. I enjoyed very little of the game, I substituted whatever I could with something better, and I was literally reluctant to pick the game back up when I set it down. But at least it was short and it's over now. And no, I'm not going to collect the Chaos Emeralds just to get the "true ending". I did get one, but I'm not going to review the special stages. All I'm going to say is that they weren't a redeeming factor. But overall the problems I have are very easy to fix; Dimps just needs to get their shit together, which they said they're doing. Here's to hoping that Episode II is at least decent. IN ANY CASE, now that I've beaten the game and the software has been removed from my system, I will promise you that I shall never bring up Sonic 4 outside of this topic here again. |

... Haven't played it. But... You don't like Splash Hill's music? 'Cause I thought it was pretty catchy... (Even though Splash Hill is possibly the worst idea for a stage ever, considering Sonic's history with grassy hill stages involving a limited amount of water.) |

I found Splash Hill's music boring and I got tired of it very quickly, tho' that might be because I played the demo so many times to "give the game another chance." lol And personally, I think Splash Hill would've worked nicely with some underwater sections, considering it's, y'know, Splash Hill and all. |

That would stand to reason. And you're right. The main thing that bugs me, though, is that it's ANOTHER "hill" stage that looks far too similar to Green Hill, but with a less captivating backdrop. They can be more creative than that, and we all know it. |

Played it once.... Does that say anything about this Sonic title. Yeah nothing overly impressive about this one no. I'd rather move back to the classics then play this again. Now don't take me wrong, it's not horrible. But the replayability is awkwardly disappointing. Music is below estimated level. And yeah I can see why you decided to pick up some other tunes then the original soundtrack. Did I say original, I meant unoriginal. Nevertheless it's to long since I actually played it seeing as I bought it almost back at it's release date. Haven't really gone back to it, even if I had some achievements left, I just simply couldn't bother. So yeah I can easily see that 5/10. I wish they'll learn from this and pick up on the second chapter that is. |

I think its pretty much a given for most sonic games that they start out in that type of hill/islandy level. Annoying yes, but a given for most of their games |

WTF is this crap? I went to game stop, got a used StH: 4 Episode I, and when I opened the case when I got home, it wasn't StH: 4! It was just Sonic the Hedgehog! Talk about being pissed off to the extreme. |

What she said. It's a downloadable title. I'm not even sure how you would have found this in a hard format anywhere. |

Sandopolis Act 2

My guess is that he picked it up at a pawn shop and it was a blank case that had Sonic 4 written on it, and the staff were too stupid to check. |

Eh, Sonic the Hedgehog '06 (assuming that's the one he's talking about) wasn't that bad. A little buggy at times and it had hellishly long load times, but it was still kind of enjoyable. But that's a discussion for another topic~ |

I would put a keyboard cat in here, but my better judgement says I shouldn't. In any case, I will say that as much of a glitchy mess it is, at least Sonic '06 made some form of attempt at being playable. |
