Bad news for the PlayStation Vita in Japan. According to Media Create (Via Joystiq), Sony's innovative handheld unit sold 72,479 units on its second week on the market. The Nintendo 3DS, on the other hand, sold 482,200 units. In Japan, the PSP, Wii, and PS3 all outsold the handheld.

On the software sales charts in Japan, three of the top five games are for the 3DS: Mario Kart 7 (#1), Super Mario 3D Land (#3), and Monster Hunter Tri-G (#4). Where no Vita games appear in the top 20 -- though, as Joystiq points out, this is likely due to both the poor hardware sales and the availability of retail games on PSN at lower prices.

The Vita is scheduled for release in North America on February 22. My question: Will it sell in the US? I've played around with it, and it's really, really cool, but I wonder how it will fare in the crowded market place of handheld devices. What do you guys think?

Heh, looks like all handhelds are having trouble getting off the starting block, However I can't see Sony doing a price cut anytime soon.
Interesting little topic of discussion this, what do you lot think?

For a jubilee, made out of diamonds.
Give it a chance to sell in other countries, I say.

My 3DS friendcode is actually my Pokemon SoulSilver friendcode, so I don't actually have a 3DS.

Well, of course they'll continue selling this in other countries.

Anyway, just like the 3DS, the Vita I believe will eventually get itself on the right track. As for me and a Vita, not sure when or if I'll ever get one, but it definitely has more upcoming noteworthy games then the PSP.

I've been reading about this and I say, how is it failing? It did 400k in 9 days with limited supply(compared to 466k the 3DS did the WHOLE month of November)... They only shipped 500k throughout the whole country of Japan. With only 100k left it's probably spread out very thin and is reported that the wifi version is completely sold out, only leaving the less popular 3G model that the Japanese don't care for. What is with the media and being so quick to jump on the Vita? They've painted a negative picture on it for no reason when it isn't even true. 70k+ is more than all individual systems do in Japan on a normal weekly basis anyway and there's no word on when more will be shipped.

On the topic of games, I think the Vita's launch games are more geared towards the west anyway, especially in February when there will be more launch titles. It's only a matter of time before some mega Japanese game comes out for the Vita and you know there will be a Monster Hunter for it. But it has also been reported that "One thing that did sell out was Vita memory cards. The bigger ones, the 16 and 32GB cards, are completely sold out, according to reports. Despite the high pricing, 90 percent of Vita purchasers also bought a memory card. " . This explains why Vita games weren't in the top 10. Does the media really expect Japanese gamers to buy huge memory cards and not use them to buy cheaper priced digital copies of games?

As for the 3DS's massive numbers this week... Have you seen the games that have come out for it recently? They've put out all of their big guns for the end of the year. Mario Kart, Monster Hunter, etc. All big games in Japan! You know what happens in Japan when a big game comes out for a system? The system surges to astronomical numbers and then usually goes back down to normal. It has happened with the PS3/PSP several times with games such as Yakuza 3/4, Resident Evil 5, Final Fantasy XIII, Monster Hunter 3G, etc. I think this just proves that despite all of these gimmicks Nintendo and Sony have used, it's ALL about the games. The reason the 3DS didn't come out swinging was because it simply lacked the software that the Japanese people wanted and now a bunch have just come out.

I see no reason for these doom and gloom articles. :???: I felt the same way when everyone was saying the 3DS failed because it wasn't doing astronomical numbers. Both the PSP and DS did better in the long run than what their launches would have suggested and the PSP was the #1 system in Japan for 2010.

Youch, that must hurt. Though I am curious if SEGA will release any sonic games for the Vita like they did with Sonic Rivals.

I wouldn't see why not. Considering ports from PS3 to Vita are simple, anything that comes to PS3 probably would go to the Vita with extras of course. Or perhaps, like Motorstorm RC and a few other games, you buy one copy and you get both so you can continue to play it while you're away from your system.

I'm not buying one unless it has a chicken soup dispenser. That seems to be the only thing missing from the smegging all-singing-all-dancing multimedia thing. It's a bit, well, beyond a normal handheld gaming platform now isn't it?

Thanks for clearing the sales thing up, Metallix! I do think that the PSV has almost no launch games, though. I mean, come on! I would like to get the PSV, but there aren't any good games coming out soon. Maybe if they have a Patapon for it... I mean, the 3DS has Mario Kart 7, Cave Story 3D, it HAD MML3, but what games does the Vita have? Exactly. Its sales will go up anyway once some games come out for it.

It's getting tiring hearing all about how things are failing with no logic behind it. When the 3DS came out, all I heard was how dedicated handhelds were dead and smart phones/tablets are the future... Now that the 3DS has hit a stride they have to turn their attention to something else and it's all just sensationalism to get people to read their articles.

As far as the games go, they had some good ones that the Japanese like. Hot Shots Golf is fairly popular over there. As for when it launches elsewhere, I'd say it has a better launch lineup of any handheld or console in recent history. Uncharted is likely to be the big hyped title but you have great gems that can't be missed like Little Deviants, Escape Plan, WipEout 2048, LittleBigPlanet, Modnation Racers Road Trip, Reality Fighter, etc. I really hope they come out with a Vita Invisimals so I can finally try out that game.

Just check out this Golden Abyss review... Seems to be the Vita's heavy hitter but it's Uncharted soooo it's not surprising!

What a surprise.

Not really.

The launch games just seem too full of them selves.

Dang, I'm the kind of gamer that literally doesn't know but one or two of the launch titles you listed. 'Uncharted?' Heard of it, but nothing more.

Uncharted 2 = unanimous game of the year 2009. Uncharted 3 = won many game of the year awards this year(albeit not unanimous).... I don't know how you haven't heard more about it.

Anywho, found a great article that pretty much debunks any stupidity from all of these forecasted failure articles... Pretty much, as with the dawn of game consoles, the second week always has a huge drop off. PS1 and PS2 had it as well but oh no one ever jumped on the PS1 or PS2... Hmmm, I wonder why? Could it be because we didn't have stupid websites all over the place trying to get people to come to their piece of the internet? OH MY YES!
