Be kind! Kind words bring life, but cruel words crush your spirit. I'm sure everyone here has been hurt by someone somewhere saying cruel words to you. No one likes the pain associated with that, so why is it ok to inflict it on others? In doing so, you are making yourself as bad as those cruel people that you have had experience with.

Don't be so selfish and look at it from their point of view. Would you want to have someone cruely disdain something you worked hard on and are trying to make it good(whether it be fanart, a task at a job, schoolwork or whatever)? No! So treat the same person the way you want to be treated. Makes sense, and if more people did this the world would be a better place.

Now there is such a thing as "tough love". In which you are honest to help the said person improve. This, unlike many of you think, needn't be all the time. However, it is required in life at times so the person doesn't go on thinking they are awesome when they are not(as seen in American Idol LOL). When giving "tough love" or constructive criticism it is best if you try to help them out. If you really don't like it you would do your best to try to make it better, unless you don't really care, in which case you should not even be responding to it. And maybe your best is just telling them where they could improve, THAT'S FINE as long as you're not cruel.

Maybe the person over reacts and is overly sensitive. Well if you just say "I don't like it, it could use improvements" and point out the flaws and that upsets them then so be it, at least you still kindly helped them out and there is no reason to continue discussing it.

That's the exact kind of stuff everyone needs to know in life. There should seriously be a mandatory course in all grade-level schools that indoctrinates people into being courteous.

What's sad is this IS common knowledge that people don't seem to know or do know, but don't follow by it.

It's sad how something so "DUH" needs to be taught to people... -_-

It might be that people already understand this, but are too lazy to apply it.

:D Too lazy to apply it... Well that's a quick way to banville no matter where you are. I just made this to give people a better idea of how to respond. They probably knew some of it, but whatever... I needed to make a guide too. :D

courtesy is something you can take to heart, too. from what I've seen you can't resist saying something incredibly naive, when your foot should have been your mouth preventing you from speaking.

Not many people heed the words you have spoken. I wish they would. If everyone could be nice, while still expressing their opinions, we would have this problem.

These days, people get so defensive when it comes to their thoughts. They don't seem to realize that everyone thinks differently.

Just being nice to one person will start a chain reaction of niceness.

It's good to know that there are still some people who believe in these truths.

Good advice but I think It'll be preaching to the converted...
I tend to be very in awe of anything art wise since I can't draw for toffee... but a bit harsher as a grammar nazi since im a (bad) writer and hate seeing a fanfic written like a text message...
but I do try to even it out (Awesome picture, love the form but the shoulder looks a bit too far back In my opinion) (Very hard to read but I do like where the plot is going)

*sigh* It says quite a lot about the society we live in that you actually need to put something like this in the tutorials section of this forum...
