I was just wondering what control methods you guys like in PC games. Personally, I've come to adore the responsiveness and sure digital controls of the keyboard for shmup games like Touhou (you always know how you're moving: up, down, left, right, up-left, up-right, down-left, down-right), but for 3D PC games and platformers, fighting games, beatemups, etc, I prefer my trusty XBox 360 controller. Couldn't beat Megamari without it. The analog stick allows you to control your character, but you can focus better on the button combinations when having it in your left hand. So I'm asking you gaiz: What control method you you guys like better and whay? I also heard that gamepads were a pretty cool cross between mice and keyboards, but I haven't the money for them. What do you guys and gals who have them think about them? |

I use one of my Dualshock 3 controllers for computer games a lot, especially since you can use Xpadder to keymap a controller for any game you want to play, even flash games. It's also easier to use your thumbs than your fingers on a keyboard, especially for games that require good reflexes like Beat Hazard. You can also map the right analog stick to emulate mouse movement, which makes games that require the mouse a lot easier to play on a laptop. |

I don't have a gamepad, so I have to stick with the keyboard. For 3D adventure/FPS/TPS games, I tend to prefer WASD/ESDF (depending on the specific game), where AD/SF are strafe and the mouse turns. Why would I use ESDF, you ask? It actually comes from the Tribes games. Tribes 1: WASD to move, H was health kit, P activated your pack, Q switched weapons. Having H and P on the other side of the keyboard was kinda annoying, so they adjusted things a little for the sequel. Tribes 2: ESDF to move, Q was health kit, R activated your pack, W switched weapons. There're also zoom buttons for each (mostly for use with the laser rifle), and they fit nicer in Tribes 2 due to the movement keys being shifted. Of course, many games won't have that many buttons all over the place. I know my brother couldn't adjust to ESDF there, so he switched to the Tribes 1 preset it had. But yeah, that's my usual control setup for these sorts of things. And to be honest, I wouldn't switch it for a gamepad. The mouse lets me turn anywhere almost instantly, and that's something you just can't do with a stick. As for games which use arrow keys + ZXC (or ASD), I can see how a gamepad would be useful there, and I'd certainly consider using one if I had one Instead, I just stick with what I have. I don't use consoles that much anyway, so it don't have a problem with being "unable" to use a keyboard for gaming or anything like that.

Really depends. I'd say most of the games I play involve WASD/Mouse. Some of my more "classic-style" games I play, like Meat Boy (and SNES games) I used a controller. |

To echo a lot of other people, it depends on what I'm playing. Most of the time I don't have much of a choice, but I know for my fighters and the like an actual game pad would come in handy. But most of the time it's just the keyboard for me. Add a mouse if I'm playing TF2 or Portal 2. |

I have no preferable control method, but for Pc, I'd say the old sidewinder flight-pad functioned neat in driving games and just about any game I once had. Nowadays, it's basically what MoD said. Keyboard and mouse for Pc, while the 360 controller for everything else. |

Looks like the up, down, left, right arrow keys method has fallen out of favor for many people? Wow, I never would have thought. I guess I got into the up, down, left, right, Z, X, C control scheme from Touhou and used it for everything else. Digital control is a b**ch when used in 3D games. Sonic Adventure PC was easy enough with digital controls, but for that, analog sticks feel so much smoother for 3D. Edited by Fwiss, Dec 11 2011, 05:56 PM.
