The Grinch stole Christmas, I stole your kid!

About time I get this off my chest… Nintendo! Trash the freaking winged blue shell and bring back the spike one from Mario Kart 64! Okay, I shall start on the winged shell before reminiscing on how the spike one is better. Winged blue shell is basically like an RP god mod. It is practically impossible to dodge and there are more of them flying at the lead kart than mice in my old house! Good Gosh! I won’t even get started on the crappy items and pure random kiddish junk that spams the maps of games later than Mario Kart 64. But the winged blue shell is the main crap… well maybe the Blooper is a close second. Winged blue shell as well as the other crap items ruins the later games for me. The Blue Spike Shell from MK64… Now that is an awesome item. I loved it and it was so coveted by the players in the rear. It was the perfect high powered awesome weapon and well balanced. You launch it and it follows the contour of the road till it finds the player in first and seeks him like a red shell. But it can be deflected. Also, it will hit anybody in its path and keep on going up to 4 people. Just an awesome weapon and you don’t get spammed by them every 3 seconds. Come on Nintendo, bring back the spiked blue shell. Few like the winged one anyways. God knows I love Nintendo but why do you insist to do like George Lucas and change things nobody wants you to? Comments? Agreements? Disagreements? |

Mmn, the winged shell is annoying, sure, but it's not a terrible item, or it wouldn't be if you actually got it once in a while instead of the AI getting them all the time ![]() |

I would say the Bullet Bills and Stars are a more annoying power up. But hey, At least in 7 you can turn the blue shells off if you don't like them. |

@P_S: xD that's for sure. The few times I've played any games later than MK64, I hardly ever got the blue shell. @Eevee: What? How can you hate on the star, dude? It's probably one of the best items. Been iconic in the series since Super Mario Kart. And that's cool, turn blue shel off... nice. |

Yeah, you have to be in the middle ranking to get it... Which is pretty stupid, it would be more useful if you were in third or second. And the star is fairly annoying, but at the same time it's so much a part of the franchise that nowadays, it can't really be removed. |

Well that is stupid.... In MK64, the further back in the ranks you were, the more offencive weapons you got. Like if you're in 8th you get the blue shell a lot. Should be like that in new games. And I see your point there, but it's just so fun plowing through everybody with Star Power. 8D |

Not really, It'll still head for person in 1st. But good chance it'll hit up to 4 people on it's way, giving you chance to pass them. Great item I must say. lol |

First off, the items do still work that way. The further back you are the more offensive power-ups you get. If you're in 1st you almost always get Banana Peels or Green Shells. In 8th or below you'll start getting stuff like the Blue Shell, Triple Red Shells, Bullet Bill and Starman. Second, I get what you're talking about in Mario Kart Wii. I'm assuming since there are more racers in a race in that game there are more people in the back of the pack getting Blue Shells. Most people I know simply refer to it as 'Rage Kart Wii' since it's mostly about getting lucky with items rather than actual skill. And frankly I'm inclined to agree. I didn't really have that problem in Mario Kart DS. Just snakers. (But that's a story for another day, kids~) Anyway, I don't mind the winged variant of the Blue Shell. It's designed to punish players in the lead so not hitting those just ahead of you is kind of nicer to those ahead of you. Plus you can easily take out at least three racers if the guys up the front are really close to each other. It's happened quite a few times to me while I'm in 2nd. ^^; I'll give further thoughts on this when I actually get a chance to play Mario Kart 7 (hopefully I'll be getting a 3DS sometime over these next two weeks), but I imagine it'll work just fine. |

Flying Battery Act 1

This is semi-unrelated, but I know a good cult classic PSX game known as Rollcage, which had a rather clever implementation of this sort of item. Known only as the "Leader Missile," obtaining it was possible at any position. (No item rubberbanding like in MK) When you fired it, it went straight for the person in first place. Impossible to dodge, and one of the more powerful attacks in terms of pure strength/stun time. The catch that made it fun? The missiles took a good 10-20 seconds to actually get to them, and during that time the leader would have an indicator in the corner of the screen telling them how close it was. This indicator, combined with the fact that the missile would switch targets if the lead changed, made it quite interesting with the leader trying to get their main rival to overtake them at the last moment. Of course, there was quite a bit more strategy (you could hold two items at once in Rollcage, which helped), including firing the leader missile when you were in the lead, which would cause it to turn around and blast you within two seconds... assuming your rivals hadn't gotten ahead of you by then. The whole setup of the game giving the leader a warning from the moment the missile is fired, combined with the missile being able to change targets at a moment's notice, makes it a much better implementation IMO. |

That actualy sounds pretty cool. I'll have to try that game. And I must say that would make an awesome addition to Mario Kart. 8D |

Looks like there's some good news for you, Quan. The regular Blue Shell is back in Mario Kart 7. It lost its wings and performs the way it used to in MK64. According to my friend it's just as annoying as the winged variant anyway. |

Sorry to disappoint you but while the blue shell has indeed lost its wings it still flys and explodeds like it does in Mario Kart Wii. |

What. How does that even work? Meh, doesn't bother me any. 'Course I fail to see how it knocks over racers on the way if it's still flying. |
