I bet the topic description got your attention, didn't it? XD Alas, I kid you not. This is an RPG with sky pirate furries piloting little mecha...and with voice clips in French. Yes, even in the original Japanese version. Why? I really don't know. I guess it's to match the European-ish design of the game more. But hey, I don't really mind what language they use. I want to play it just for the concept alone :) Have a look at the trailer:

Believe it or not, I only heard about this game yesterday, and it almost went totally under my radar. Fortunately I had a friend who mentioned it to me, and already I really want to get it. It reminds me a lot of older RPGs on the SNES, except the characters are mostly cats and dogs of course. And the artwork is just plain gorgeous too. A lot of people wish this could become a proper anime in its own right.

It actually came out back in September, so you can buy it now. But you may need to use Amazon or something. This game had a very small print run apparently, and I don't think you'll find copies in stores now.

It's almost quite reminiscent of Studio Ghibli works...

Just a shame it's not its own anime... [cries a little]

Oh, the guys who did Howl's Moving Castle and those shows? Yeah, now that you mention it I can see it totally. By the way, remember Links? It was him who recommended this game to me XD

This game's got a really weird marketing campaign. There are 100 short commercials on YouTube, and basically they all talk about the game itself, and most interestingly the world you're playing in. Looks like they wanted to show off how they designed this animal world to make it tick. There's videos on sports (frisbee catching...done the way a real dog would do it), foods (mostly meats and fish), snacks (a hot new junk food called Galee Bones), beers, and even more banal subjects.

You might wanna see some of them. One of them shows pictures of the actual breeds of dogs and cats they based the main characters on. Apparently the hero Red is a Shiba Inu.

I'd play it if I had a DS. I like odd games like this.

It looks pretty cool, it reminds me of Tail Concerto, only with a lot cooler mechs and violence! Plus the visuals are pretty impressive for being a regular DS games, particularly the cutscenes! I think it would definitely be worth checking out!

Apparently, Tail Concerto is the first part of the story.

This is done by the same group that does .hack. I would actually be interested in trying this.

Yup, ShadowGal got it right. This game is set in the same universe. In fact, I've heard you can even meet the characters from Tail Concerto in this game.

Myself, I've never played Tail Concerto or haven't heard of it until I heard of this game, but I may have to try that one now too :)

I heard about Tail Concerto a while ago and played it on a PSX emulator, it's pretty fun, though the last area of the game before the final boss was as frustrating as hell with how hard it was to land on the right platforms. Still, it was a pretty solid game and it kept me entertained for a while. It would be interesting to see how Waffle and the others from Tail Concerto would fit into this game too.

Hey guys, got an update here. I got hold of a copy about a week ago and I'd like to talk about my initial thoughts.

In terms of story and characters, the game so far is basically playing out like your traditional console JRPG plot. An evil empire (Kurvaz) is trying to get hold of all these magic crystals, and naturally you and your little ragtag band of heroes needs to stop them. You know, so your party has an excuse to run all over the world while the bad guys do the same thing. The heroes fit neatly into the traditional JRPG hero molds. The main character Red is of course under 20 and hotheaded, you've got a Mysterious Waif character in Elh, and a girl sidekick in Chocolat.

Mind you, that's not to say it's boring or anything. I think the core group of Red, Elh, and Chocolat is fun and delightful to be around. They play off of each other well. Red of course is the hotheaded one, Elh is the serious one, while Chocolat is usually cheery and handles the technical side of things. It helps a lot that each of the main characters has a variety of character portraits, showing a lot of different emotions as they talk to one another. They even come complete with sweat drops, vein pulses, and those other things you'd expect from characters expressing anime emotions.

So yeah, if you like anime and JRPGs, you'll feel right at home with this game. I actually thought I'd dislike the game because of this, but hey, I like the characters and the setting so much I don't really mind.

You'd know this from the trailer of course, but the visuals are stunning for a DS game. I like how the game takes pains to not make most cutscenes a string of text bubble conversations. Special cutscenes pop up frequently with more detail, polygons, and camera work in them, and you'll find yourself playing farther just to see more of these little scenes. Even better, you can purchase them as little movies to be viewed any time you like on your ship.

Remember how I was talking about character portraits up above? Almost all NPCs who have one get unique portraits of their own (excepting one for a generic Kurvaz soldier), and I really appreciate the effort there.

As for the Tail Concerto characters, so far I've run into the princess from Tail Concerto (I forget her name) during a side quest. The Black Cats gang also makes an appearance. The Black Cats kittens hide all over the world, and if you capture them when they show up you'll get a piece of a photograph. Find all four pieces of a photograph and you can view it on your ship.

Most of the game is completing side quests. You go to the Quest Broker and just do these as they become available. Mostly these consist of side battles or picking things up and moving them around (like moving boxes around a warehouse or picking up trash). It sounds kind of dull, but it really isn't. Every sidequest will at least have its own unique self-contained plot and dialogue, and most of them try to help flesh out Solatorobo's world as well. So you don't feel like they're just busy work. You often end up working for the same people over and over too, and they have their own plot arcs as well the longer you work with them. This also helps to break up the monotony.

As for complaints...

The game holds your hand way too much. You're told exactly what you need to do to proceed at almost every single point in the game. The few puzzles that show up are extremely simple and will only take about five seconds to solve.

The combat system is extremely simple too. It can basically be summed up as "pick things up and throw them at other things". Most fights consist of baiting an enemy into doing an attack, then running around his back during the cooldown period after the attack. Then you grab him and throw him at another enemy. Rinse and repeat till all enemies in an area are defeated.

This game was obviously made for little kids though, so I won't be too hard on it for either of those points.

As I said above, it's a definite buy for people who enjoy JRPGs and anime, and it's a very solid game for people who are fans of games with anthropomorphic characters too. I certainly don't regret getting it. It's a very lighthearted adventure that's full of lots of comedy and action.

Only in Japan do you get stuff like furry pirates piloting mechas in a roleplaying game with french clips in them... no other country could think up stuff like this. That's what you gotta love about them sometimes, or else Sonic would have never existed to begin with.

Anyone else bought this game since I brought it up?

I would like to share another update, now that I feel like I've played pretty deep into this game.

The first half of the game is great, but the second half of the game is downright exceptional! Remember that "search the world for the magic crystals" plot I was talking about before? I won't spoil too much, but guess what? It's only the first half of the game! The second half delves a lot more into the origin story behind Red and the world that the furries inhabit. Suddenly the story and gaming world get a whole lot bigger and deeper, not to mention the stakes for the characters are raised much higher.

To get here took me about ten hours, and that was with me doing every sidequest I could find. So it's a long wait, but it's totally worth it. I played the game rock solid for a few hours longer than I meant to once I cleared the first half of the game. I've reached the point where I just want to play the game because I'm excited to see where the story goes. It's hard to put it down because of that. This is just the kind of feeling you want to have in an RPG, for sure.

It's not just the plot either. Your robot gets an enhancement that allows you to mount different frames to it. You can get rid of your basic frame for one that stresses more mobility, or one that allows you to recover health over time. Mind you, you actually can enhance your stats before this with new parts, but changing the frame has a much bigger effect on overall performance. The enhancement itself gives you the capability to fit more parts too.

---

I think I should mention a few of the side activities you can do... Air Robo GP and Hermit Crab Fishing.

Air Robo GP basically plays like Mario Kart with planes. You race up to three other people along a track in the sky, and every so often you'll get turbo boost powerups and other items to mess with the other players. This is probably the only part of the game I have a hard time playing, and that's surprising since I love racing games. If you hit anything (especially the course walls) you usually come to a dead stop. Naturally the CPU opponents are largely perfect pilots, so a few bad collisions or getting unlucky with items can easily ruin a race. I do like the music while you race but overall find the experience annoying.

As for hermit crab fishing, I actually thought it was going to be kind of lame, but it can be quite fun. These hermit crabs are actually the size of battleships, and old battleship wrecks are what they use for their shells. No, I'm serious. I couldn't believe my eyes when I saw this for the first time. Basically you stick a crab with a harpoon, then you tap the A button while holding the D-pad in the direction the game tells you to drag. Manage to get the hermit crab all the way to you, and you get points that you can use to trade for rare, powerful parts. It's much more profitable to invest time on fishing rather than racing, plus it takes less time too.
