MY Thoughts on SG; Meh...

I was extremely excited for the game, but somewhat glad I waited till Black Friday to pick it up for 20 bucks cheaper. It's a pretty fun game, but sadly, not worth the full $50.

My overall rating is that it was somewhat of a disappointment.

- Modern Sonic didn't give me that same rush of Speed like in Unleashed.
- The levels offer little replay value.
- Bosses were/became too easy and boring.
- Modern Sonic had too much platforming, not enough speed.
- Super Sonic added hardly any extra fun.
- Too short. Beat the story in a mere 4 hours.
- Some segments were aggravating.
- Not motivated to do missions or gather Red Rings.
- Minor glitches, such as double tap spikeballs or simply stopping in the middle of Boosting. Spindash also would stop short when I tried to use it.
- Some levels simply left a bad taste in my mouth. Like, "I'm never coming back here again," kinda taste.
- Skills seemed pointless.

I'm pretty sure there's more. I'll continue to edit when I think of more. Thoughts anyone?
-Sig under construction because the next thing I use will be hilarious-

Skills seem pointless? The fcking are! There is NO point in earning them when you can't use them in these things called CHALLENGES.

I've also encountered quite a few glitches. Actual glitches, and quite a few, actually.

When I gave my ramblings on SG, I made sure to clarify that I was not reviewing the game, as I wasn't playing it really hard and skillfully. Now that I am playing the game really hard and trying hard for the good ranks and using the online features, the problems are glaring, and I've actually lost quite a bit of will to fully replay it now that I've gotten to the Egg Dragoon (aka the glitchiest thing in the whole damn game).
And to clarify, I have to replay it because the save files for the PAL and NTSC versions are different. Ffff.

Besides what I added, I completely agree. Hopefully DLC makes the game better and fixes some of the glaring problems, but I think I'm mainly going to hold out for a good PC and then buy/pirate the PC version and mod the absolute hell out of that.

Generations was a fun little game, but overall, for an anniversary game, it's a bit below SA2 but beat the hell out of '06 without question. (for the record, I personally didn't mind '06, but I will admit it was a pretty stupid game)

But I know what you mean by levels leaving a bad taste. *eyes Crisis City Act 1* Unfortunately for me, however, my PS3 hard disk is getting wiped so I get to start the ENTIRE GAME over again.

The challenges felt like something to tag onto the game to try and make it longer, and really it just felt unnecessary. Some of them were fun, but really, most of the time i was just going "Yeah yeah, just lemme fight the boss already." One type of mission I especially loved was the over-aggravating "Endless Boost" missions, if only because they're a giant middle finger to all the whiny fans who hated Unleashed and following games because "LOL BOOST TO WIN". Nice job, Sega. You deserve a high five. [/notsarcasm]

I could go on, but i don't really feel like writing an essay right now. I give a game a 7/10 overall. It was fun, but nothing spectacular.

I disagree what you said about Modern Sonic. I liked the generations levels way better than Unleashed with Modern Sonic. (Both Wii/PS2 Versions and 360/PS3 I didn't like as much as Modern Sonic's levels.)

I disagree with most of what you said however there are only a few points I'd like to point out and give my thoughts on.

Didn't give the rush of speed like Unleashed?? I've played the demo and it felt the same to me. Not to mention everything's blurring past you anyway! So much so that when you're boosting you really can't see much of your surroundings.

Little replay value? What exactly would make a level have more replay value? It has multiple paths... I replay them all the time simply because I like the game(a rare few games will have me playing it over and over). I don't see how this has no replay value in its levels yet a classic like, say, Sonic 2 does. Every game of Sonic has a few paths(or none) and it's pretty much linear.

People were complaining that Sonic was TOO fast in Unleashed and there was no challenge, now all we want is to mash square to pass most of the level by??? Well I don't know if you were one of those people but they were out there and probably the reason why Sega didn't make all of the modern levels a "just mash boost" type level.

There's no doubt that it's slower than Unleashed, mainly because Unleashed came with Speed Upgrades. Now I'm not all for the entire "Boost To Win" gameplay, but I like segments where Boost in encouraged more, which every level has in some way, but I still am left with wanting more.

After going back to it, I somewhat take this back. Some levels are still left with no replay value, but I'm definitely going to be coming back to play more Modern over Classic.

However, skills were pretty pointless indeed, especially since they couldn't be used in Bosses or Challenges. Sure, they make it easier, but that's what they're there for... I'd at least like a little extra way to use Super Sonic during Bosses/Rivals. They should of added extra segments for when you did use it so it wasn't completely cheap. Like, maybe your rivals go Super when you do? Definitely be epic.

That... would actually be pretty awesome. It'd work too.

Also, after a few games with an average to lackluster soundtrack, I gotta say I really loved Generations' OST. With the exception of a few tracks, I gotta say that Generation has the best OST I've heard since Unleashed. maybe because they're great remixes of already great songs, but still, they're awesome. Chemical Plant Act 2, Modern Escape From the City, Rooftop Run Act 1 and both versions of Crisis City and Seaside Hill are probably my favorites. (and that's probably half the game right there, herp)

Only tracks i didn't really like were the final boss theme and Classic EFtC, if only for the bad autotuning in there. The beat is still pretty catchy.

That's kind of the job of the fastest thing alive...

--------

The Soundtrack definitely makes the game better, and allowing for any music to play in any mode is actually a great idea. Playing Kingdom Valley as I beat down Silver just felt "Oh, so right,"

However, I feel nothing can replace the Shadow Rival music. Except maybe Splash Hill Zone or Palm Tree Panic... >D [/totalsarcasmthough]

Sonic is too fast.
Does not compute.

The really cool thing about the music, tho', is that you can play your own custom music besides the tracks they give you. I always play Drunkard Does make Wise Remarks during Rooftop Run and The Midnight Carnival when fighting the final boss. Epic stuff.

You're not a Sonic Fan. Get off the forums.
Okay, seriously? That was totally uncalled for. He's allowed to express his opinion - and if he thinks Modern Sonic's too fast, so be it.

I will second that I felt Modern Sonic felt somewhat slower than he should have been, and you can't really fix that because the skills are stupidly pointless. I REALLY REALLY hope a hacker fixes that in the PC version.

Honestly, that's exactly what they were. Sure, it was nice that they didn't copy and paste parts of the main Act levels and say "here's a new challenge", so I can appreciate that, but it would have been nicer to have 1.5-3 times as many levels with just two big Acts instead of 10 extra crapfests that didn't add anything tacked on.

What also bothers me about the challenges is that they aren't all that original. Get To The Goal, Get To The Goal Before Your Doppleganger/Rival, Use This Thing To Get To The Goal, Collect These Things And Then Get To The Goal. It's like they didn't even really try. Some of the friend missions are kind of fun, but that's about it.
And that's not to say that the unoriginal missions aren't fun, but they're just nothing that makes me stop and go "wait WHAT?"

I also will add that those Endless Boost missions, or even the 3x boost gauge ones, those are pretty much a middle finger to the SU haters. However, SU is anything BUT boost to win. I cannot play a level in that game anymore without dying, pretty much.

IMO, some of the skills could have had added cons to them.
  • Super Sonic - Obviously, this is a skill that can't be equipped with anything else, and you need to get 50 rings and sustain them. Equals itself out enough alone.
  • Endless Boost - You can't pick up rings, so spikes, enemy projectiles, and so forth kill you instantly. Good for the pros who want speed and a challenge.
  • 10-Second Rings - No actual con, so what they could have done was made it so you couldn't equip it with Sure Footed.
  • Athleticism - Again, no con, so they could have made it so full speed was reduced a bit.
  • Boardmaster - I didn't know this skill existed, but they, if they didn't, could have made it so you can't spindash when this is equipped.

Just a few ideas.

I DO like that Super Sonic idea. If you have something equipped, your doppleganger could also have it equipped and use it. But perhaps only for hard mode? Hm.

I don't get this. If he's too fast, don't boost! Or stop upgrading his speed.

Yeah... yeah, same here. I don't get that. It's a platformer that also aims to be fast. The guy has always been marketed to move at the speed of sound or faster.

I will say that he is pretty damn fast in SU at some points. I've seen check points tell me I passed them while moving at like 1400mph.
