SEGA Europe today revealed that they are to allow fans the chance to help name one of the all new enemy races in the highly anticipated Sonic the Hedgehog RPG adventure, Sonic Chronicles: The Dark Brotherhood™. Developed by industry admired story-telling specialists, BioWare, Sonic Chronicles: The Dark Brotherhood will appear on the Nintendo DS™ system during Autumn 2008.

Between March 3rd and March 14th fans will be able to visit the Sonic City website (www.sonic-city.com) to cast their vote in naming the new race. Computer&Videogames reports that NGamer has some interesting tidbits.
While some aren't exactly new with the whole Sonic being entirely controlled by stylus.
It reveals that attacks during combat can powered up through mini games and simple tests.
The story will aparently be very linear and straighfoward.
Puzzle solving also can be solved by selecting the right character at in a certain situation.
Finally, Sonic Chronicles: The Dark Brotherhood will aparently be a more mature Sonic game, one particular scene showed Amy Rose calling Rouge a tramp.

In its latest issue (on sale from Wednesday), NGamer has spilled the dirt on the BioWare-developed Sonic Chronicles: The Dark Brotherhood, tapped for release later this year.

According to NGamer, the game makes extensive use of the stylus, with players not only controlling Sonic and chums with it, but also selecting context-sensitive level furniture for characters to use.

Loop-the-loops, springboards and platforms can all be selected using the stylus, whereby Sonic responds accordingly by spinning through the loop, leaping on the board and jumping up on the platform.

The context-sensitive items act as puzzles, calling on the unique abilities of different characters in order to use them and progress.

Combat is turn-based and shares similarities with the Mario and Luigi RPG's. Each round begins with a dry menu section, but attacks are augmented with mini-games and tests.

In terms of story, the game is more linear than typical Bioware titles. Different options on dialogue trees reveal more information, but all funnel the player towards the same conclusion.

NGamer also reveals that the tone of the game is darker than previously shown, citing a moment where Amy Rose says to Rogue the Bat, "You're a tramp!"

Sega can have our thirty-quid on the basis of that alone. Check out NGamer this Wednesday for more on what just shot up our most wanted list.

IGN: How big is the team working on Sonic Chronicles and when did development begin?

Mark Darrah Development began in 2006 when BioWare started looking into developing for handheld systems. The actual Sonic project came along later. Currently we've got a decent sized team with over thirty people.

IGN: The Sonic games are traditionally action / platform based. Why bring the Hedgehog into the RPG genre?

Mark Darrah BioWare are big fans of the Sonic IP. One of BioWare's core strengths is developing story driven games, so it was natural to bring Sonic to that genre. Fortunately, the Sonic IP is filled with rich characters and is an excellent series to expand the storyline.

IGN: How does the storyline in Sonic Chronicles begin?

Mark Darrah Eggman was defeated some time ago and Sonic has gone out to explore the rest of his world. He has been gone for a while and then gets a call from Tails - Knuckles has been kidnapped! Not only that, the chaos emeralds are disappearing!

IGN: The storyline is made up of two acts. Please explain how this works?

Mark Darrah The first Act takes place mostly in Sonic's World. Sonic and his friends are figuring out what is happening and trying to stop the Master Emerald from being taken. In the Second act, the group must travel to another dimension to stop a new threat to Sonic's World.

IGN: What kinds of locales will gamers recognize from the Sonic series?

Mark Darrah To name a few: Green Hill Zone, Central City, Mystic Ruins and the Blue Ridge Zone

IGN: How is the second act of the game darker? Can you give us some details?

Mark Darrah The second act takes place primarily in another dimension. We are not discussing the story of Act 2 at this time.

IGN: Explain to us how the two screens on DS are being used.

Mark Darrah In exploration, the top screen serves as a mini-map for the current area. In other screens, it is used to display the non interactive parts of the GUI.

IGN: How exactly do you play the game?

Mark Darrah The game will be controlled using the stylus really allowing for a sense of speed that is key to Sonic series.

IGN: Please detail the intricacies of the control system. For example, how do you move Sonic and friends about the environment and interact with objects and characters?

Mark Darrah The game has full stylus controls. In exploration, the stylus is used to guide Sonic around. In other GUI screens, the stylus is used to pick individual components on the GUI to interact with.

Interacting with elements in the environment is done through an icon system. So if you want to talk to an NPC, a speech bubble will appear over the NPC's head. To fly Tails across a chasm, the player will click on a flying icon.

IGN: Is there a layer of interactivity to the turn-based battles? How does it work?

Mark Darrah In Combat we have the added twist of real time elements. These are on screen elements that keep the player engaged by having them click, drag and smash various icons.

IGN: Sonic games are known for blazing speed. How will you present (or sidestep) this in an RPG? As a direct question, are there any loop-de-loop moments?

Mark Darrah There are loop-de-loop moments. The most important thing in Sonic Chronicles is remaining true to Sonic's roots while still exploring new directions. This means evoking a feeling of speed and attitude in the player's interaction with Sonic.

IGN: Who can you play as in the game?

Mark Darrah There are several playable characters in the game. The ones we are discussing right now are: Sonic, Knuckles, Amy, Tails, Rouge the Bat, Big and more soon to be announced.

IGN: Please give us a few examples of how the different mascots have different attributes?

Mark Darrah The major differences between the characters will be the movement and combat powers that each possesses. Amy has a hammer and can smash things in the environment as well as in combat. Knuckles can climb and glide.

IGN: How many characters can you have in your party? And can they work together? How?

Mark Darrah You can have four characters in the party at once. In combat many different combinations of party members will have different combination attacks that use their special moves together.

IGN: How deep is the character leveling up system? How customizable are your characters?

Mark Darrah You control the combat moves that each character gains and improves. Additionally, you can collect items to equip each player. There are a few other things as well that we aren't talking about right now, but stay tuned for more info coming soon!

IGN: Is Sonic Chronicles entirely a single-player affair or will there be a multiplayer component either wirelessly or by way of Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection?

Mark Darrah We aren't talking about how we will be taking advantage of any wireless capabilities yet.

IGN: There seems to be a lot of beautiful hand-drawn backgrounds in the game. How big of a cartridge will Sonic Chronicles require?

Mark Darrah Big -- though we aren't saying quite yet which cart we're using.

IGN: Do you see The Dark Brotherhood as the beginning of a new Sonic RPG series? In other words, supposing the first is a success, might you make sequels?

Mark Darrah The story is rich enough it could possibly support a series so who knows what may happen but at this point out whole focus is on this new title.

Im on Nocturnes now and my charectors are mostly all lvl 15 while last time it was 13. if im correct my charectors should lvl atleast twice here without grinding which means lvl 17 charectors.
Yes, you should be able to do 2-3 levels easy on Nocturne.

And I'm sure Ix will not be such a big endeavor this time. Just make sure you keep those heals up (and keep those *additional* pylons down).

The only part about the game I didn't like was how easy the final boss was.

I agree it could've been a better fight. But on the flipside, you do 3 encounters against Ix (Team Knuckles vs Ix, Team Sonic vs. Ix, and Team Sonic chase vs Ix) prior to the Super fight. I was getting sort of tired of fighting (notably when I had to chase him...). They could have at least dragged the fight out a few rounds longer for the Super fight (make the damage a little lower/boost their healths).

That's one of my favorite attack combos. It's so strong. <3

Echidna Rush is insane, yeah. Just have Tails give them both Medi-Bots and you can use it indefinitely. Quite the game-breaker. If you're better with Cream, I'm sure she could do the same thing. But I loved the ending...the credits had me laughing out loud. BioWare really knows its stuff.

Yeah, Omega was a riot there. Some things Tails said were pretty funny too, though, regarding the staff, calling BioWare's founders epic and poking fun at...one group, can't remember which. Maybe I should beat it again...

Nothing happens if you collect all the Chao :( . Or all the rings, for that matter. It's just a completist thing.

Hi all. :D

I know this is an old game, but I've been putting off playing it for so long that I finally give in and tried it.
At first I thought it was a bit gay.
' zOmG Knuckles is missing  '
' ZhoemGee! :???: -.- T_T '
Lame story line, and terrible character models.

But then I played on and changed my mind.
I just wanted to share my personal review of the game for anyone thinking the same as I did.
If you need a reason then let's just say the more positivity about the game may lead to future Sonic games similar to this, or even a 'Sonic Chronicles 2: The Light Sisterhood'
or what ever.
Though saying that I hear tell of a
''Sonic_Chronicles_2:_The_Travel_Tales''
Though I think this was a fan made game or something.

Anyway.
Here's my review.

For this I shall leave out the ugly character models as it's a Nintendo DS game, so, can't really expect perfection, yet. :\

First of all I found the story farly typical, however the way it was pulled off worked quite well with the RPG.
The whole female Echidna thing really fucuhedd with Knuckles feelings as he thought he was the last of an extinct species.
Thought last time I checked there was never any shortage of ant eaters on Earth, so couldn't they have just got a normal Echidna and manipulated it's DNA or something?
Whatever.
I particularly enjoyed the different options of how conversations with various characters went down.
More so the banter abled between Sonic & Amy.
The who Amy's boyfriend Dexter thing was kind of heart breaking, even if you don't really care for SonAmy as it was like a new era in their relationship.
That and no-one wants to see Amy paired up with a little fat ginger kid with a secret laboratory in his bed room.
But a little light flirting from Sonic got her to admit she was making it up.
Plus the other characters response to Sonics jealousy about Dexter and the argument between them made me lol inside.

Speaking of which the sarcastic humour brought about from the characters select banters was pretty well done.
Plus Rouge's responses were totally slutty in some parts which was nice as it shows Sega are still keeping in mind most of Sonic's fans are matured now.

The fight mode was pretty gay, but it grew on me after a while, then it started to piss me off again, then I started to enjoy it again.
In other words, it was a normal RPG fighting mode.
Thought playing it on an emulator is fudging difficult when it comes to the special attacks.

The Hub world was really trucking annoying.
Similar to Unleashed, you must talk to people who are strangely calm with a group of human like animals running around their city.
As usual their missions are pointless and annoying, but it's all worth it when they reward you with a leaf or something at the end... Ass holes.

Also pick your characters wisely.
You need certain characters to get around certain parts of the town (I.G) Spin/Run, Fly, Climb, (thought surely you could just fly where you need to climb, right? Wrong) and,
Big the Cat as a human/cat shield
I'm gonna side note that this was the only time I didn't hate seeing Big in a game.
Not only was his abilities suitably funny but his retarded input to conversations did not go unnoticed by the other characters.

Of course Eggman was your friend again for a bit in the game, but the whole Sonic The Robotnik thing doesn't tickle my happy place :\

Finally Super Sonic is present, which tops it off for me, but I won't say when.
(You know it's at the end anyway so why should I even bother covering it up.)

Hope you enjoyed my short pointless review ^.^

If you have any information on a sequel to this game, or any similar styled Sonic games, speak now or forever hold the fact you can say it an time as it doesn't really matter when you do.
