That's because Ninty markets it well. Nintendo has always been known to hype the Pokemon series and then keeping that hype going with downloads of rare or even normally-unobtainable Pokemon (Mew and Celebi for instance). All it comes down to is how each company sells their games. Pokemon is probably going to still be around so long as there is still money to be milked from the franchise. And so long as there are people who will buy their games.

Same with F-Zero or maybe Star Fox. If Mario or Link were, then Nintendo would definetly go bankrupt. Hell, Ninty is directed towards kids. Kids will buy ANYTHING they think looks cool. Just put a skull on the front of an album cover, it'd sell by the millions.

Their are plenty of adults who still play Pokemon, Zelda, Mario, Star Fox, F-Zero, etc. Ninty gears their sales towards a family audience. Fun for all ages games. But they still will bring out games for hardcore gamers to keep them satisfied. The games that come out that aren't big sellers are there to satisfy non-gamers. Basically the longer you wait, the better the game. Ninty will still give hardcore gamers good games that will keep them somewhat satisfied until the next big game. But we're getting off topic. So let's get back to the topic shall we.

That's arguable, Silver and Gold came out as normal gameboy games but crystal was gameboy colour exclusive. I actually forgot Crystal was on the color, I had a color and I played all of the 2 gens on that, so I didn't notice the difference. I still think it would be a tad sad to jump handhelds. For the most part, the majority of the Gens have had their 3 versions on the same system. But, if Grey is going to do anything crazy and epic, I guess I wouldn't mind it being for 3DS. (But I don't think there's enough content even with a Pokemon installment on there to make me go buy one yet.)
