Sandopolis Act 1

In case you didn't know, the Windows 8 Developer Preview was released by Microsoft yesterday, free for anyone who wants to see what it's all about. I quickly installed the 32-bit version without Visual Studio 11 Express. At first I was dazzled by the new Start page (as opposed to the old start menu), but it got annoying for someone who wants to customize in-depth. The system had some very cute junk installed, all of them Windows 8-specific apps? They were all fullscreen-only apps, which was more a bug than a feature, but hey, it's the developer's choice! Right? I noticed there was barely any way to exit the apps, but switching was easy. I ended up uninstalling the ones I didn't like. There is also no way that I know to get the old start menu up and running. The new start menu doesn't have all the apps like the start menu does. I couldn't find many of the base apps I wanted, like the entire Accessories folder we all know and love. You can't add or remove programs from the start menu easily (You have to right click the program or its shortcut and pin it to the start menu). It doesn't look like you can drag and drop to the start menu, and folders can't be added either. I found opening a location to be slower and with less alternatives. You can't pin my computer or control panel to the start menu (The start menu automatically has a limited, tablet-style Control Panel, and you'll be led to a legit control panel in the 'more settings' at the bottom) You basically have to open Explorer, which was posted to the quick launch and start menu, but since you can't pin a location to the start menu, you won't be able to acces your libraries or files as conveniently. I did like the new small UI tweaks with the Explorer Shell and the Task Manager (And most importantly, the copy/delete dialogue box). The ribbon interface is pretty, but not too much of a change. There is only one theme as far as I can see. The Classic theme has been removed. The basic is just the 8 Aero without transparency. The highcontrast themes are recolored basic themes. I'm hoping the hackers get their hands on the UI quickly. Driver support is great, even better than seven. This is the first time a vanilla install has worked right with the monitors of all three of my laptops. I could play every game I wanted out of the box. It's a good concept, but with its tablet-like UI, it feels just as limited as the iPhone. I think I'll keep my copy of 7 for now. What do you guys think? have you tried it yet? |

With what you just described, I think I'll stop at Windows 7. Anyway, with technology's current rate of excelleration, I think I'll wait until 9. Better yet, make it 10. |

By the sounds of it, Windows 8 has a LOT of work ahead of it in order to streamline UI controls and options. I'm usually game to try anything new and advanced, but this sounds pretty terrible so far, save for the driver support. Windows 7 will do for now until then. |

Sorry to bump but...seriously? Windows 7 is still new. Is it now Microsoft practice to give a new system a few years before moving on to the next? |

It worked for Nintendo's hand held gaming industry. |

Which this is not. Ugh, no standard Windows interface = no interest. I'm staying at Windows 7, and even Modd can't chide me and call me a dinosaur for it. |

^ Hey I'm still on X-P. I doubt I'll ever upgrade because I don't want to buy a new computer. I'll keep mine until it dies and then I might not even get a new one. lol
