i. NOTES Take heed: One, this is fanwank. Calling it gospel is silly and refuting it only on that basis shameful. This is just for fun. Two, a major assumption is being made: All Sonic characters excluding humans, robots, gods/entities, and Chao are considered closely related enough biologically that they share the same genetics for coloration; I mean, Fang somehow exists after all. As such, the term "coat" not only denotes fur but feathers and scales too. Third, this is only in reference to official Sonic characters, but if your fan character is applicable to all of this, then congrats, he/she's probably not a sparkly mess. But if this proves popular enough, I may go ahead and start adding the genes necessary for said sparkly messes. This is indeed a work in progress and may be for some time, but it appears solid enough for display. The idea simply came from reading about dog coat colors on the Internet. Major help was also given by my friend Lil Avii who's an aspiring vet and knows this stuff more readily off the top of her head. Extra help, suggestions, and clarification is appreciated by other readers. And finally, here's some complimentary cookies to bide your time. You get popcorn if you read the whole thing. =D 0. Its way too early in the morning for me to fully understand all of this, but it does look like something I would toy around with at some point, especially the last section. |

You think it's a head-twister now; imagine writing all of this. xP But yeah, I'm curious to see where people take this thing, although I'm still not sure it's as robust as it needs to be. Maybe TUC can help a bit. xD |

Knowing TUC, I'm sure he will have a few comments to make. ![]() I'm not going to pretend that I know all the in's and out's of genetics and I'm sure it would take me more time then I care to think about to get to the level where I would fully understand everything here. That being said, As a guide I think its a sturdy foundation to build on. |

I'm hardly a genetics expert myself, but genotypes are simple in theory: just a set of genes that define something. xD |

Since you only understood some of it, you're not gonna be privy to extra butter. xP Although, I may add a glossary for extra clarfication.

Eh. I know the lingo for genetics. But that's about it. I could never fully grasp putting it all together in its entirety. And dang... I like extra butter... |

*munching on delightfully delicious cookies* Let me see if I can understand this, using my own character; Blaire's primary fur color is a mid-tone violet, making her cool with warm banding. She also has lavender fur on her torso, inner ears, muzzle, and the underside of her tail, thereby showing mantling. Okay then... Now, the only thing I don't get is the whole letter thing....how do you figure out how to mix them up? Do I still get popcorn? :3 |

The letters are just genes. For Sonic and Marine, I merely looked at their physical traits and matched them to the corresponding genes in the series list. As an example, Sonic is a solid blue, a recessive trait, so I gave him aa. If he had Aa, he would display markings all the time because markings are dominant over solid colors, and that isn't in line with his appearance. Once both Sonic and Marine's genotypes were done, I made Punnet squares for each series, the grids you see in which you combine one half of each parent's genes to figure out a child's genotype. So for example, if Sonic is aa and Marine is AA, then all offspring will be Aa. Once every series had been privy to a Punnett square, I matched the corresponding phenotypes up again. So the first child got all of the new phenotypes that came first in the Punnett square, the second child got all of the second ones, and so on and so forth. Does that make sense? xD And yes, you get popcorn too. You're also correct about Blaire's genetics. <3 |

Well, like I said, I may be adding extra clarification to give people a genetics refresher as well as a glossary. But I need a computer for that. xP And mebbe. 8( |

Yeah, that might be a good idea. Because I remember learning about this stuff, but it wasn't as...complex as yours. ![]() And what do you mean 'mebbe'? D: .................... You ate all the butter, didn't you? |

Genetics in grade school is usually simplified because they are complicated. A series of genes can go beyond the entry level two and have four, five, six, seven and more, and there are series that override other series. It's all like an epic biological game of Lights Out. xD The source I used talked about dogs and is far worse than this despite dealing with far fewer colors. And of course not! The dog did. |

Speaking of dogs, reading all this, I was reminded of a funny story my biology teacher told me that relates to all this. Basically, this scientist claimed that the whole 'punnett squares' busniess could not be used to accuratlely describe, say, the color of a dog's coat. In this case, it was a black Labrador bred with a yellow one. If I remember correctly, the punnett square we were shown that led to this story being told, went something like this; There were four offspring. Two were male, two were female. The coat color went something like this; Yellow male Yellow female Black male Black female. So, this scientist did a little experiment, to prove that this could never happen. He actually got two labs of those colors and bred them with each other. Guess what happened? ![]() And I've heard that excuse before, Bliz. I dont believe it for a second.
