HOUSTON - The arrest of a man accused of breaking into a woman's house and trying to suck her blood has sparked discussion about the impact of vampire books and movies on youth culture.
Whether pop culture played a role in Saturday's attack remains to be seen, as 19-year-old Lyle Monroe Bensley awaits a psychiatric evaluation in jail on burglary charges in Galveston, Texas.
Galveston police say the man forced his way into the apartment of a woman he did not know and made growling and hissing noises while biting and hitting the victim in her bed.
Found in a parking lot and wearing only boxer shorts, the pierced and tattooed Bensley claimed he was a 500-year-old vampire who needed to "feed," Galveston Police Capt. Jeff Heyse said.

I just saw this actually. XD Very funny indeed. But I feel there was more to the case and possibly more to the reason why the dude thinks he's a vamp. The article just pointed the finger at movies and books and whatnot, just like they point the finger at video games and TV for teens' violent ways.

I still can't use this.

Correlation doesn't equal causation. Anything could have triggered this nut whether it was feasibly part of the resurgence of vampirism in the media or not.

Wait, why jump so suddenly to twilight. There like billions of stories that could be blamed, but they go for twilight just because its the most recent movie/book about vampires.

I wonder if he choose the women or if it was just a random attack.

Break out the L-word. The other L-word.
I see nothing connecting this guy to the recent rise in popularity of vampires recently. This guy just over obsesses with vampires, and probably wasn't in his right mind to begin with. Reminds me of that shooting, where the kid played a lot of Counter Strike and they said that that's why he did it. No, he probably would have done it whether he played Counter Strike or not.

I could go on ranting about the media, but bluh. It's not like stuff you guys don't already know. (and have kind of already said)

I don't see how you can just throw media out of being non influential. He was messed up already and/or obsessed, that doesn't mean something he read couldn't have tripped him over the edge. I agree that movies/books shouldn't be a scapegoat, but you can't rule it out as not being a factor.

Twilight did trigger the recent resurgence in vampire fiction, or at least it put tons of vampire fiction on the front shelves of bookstores. Nevrtheless, as much as I hate vampire fiction, it's obvious the fiction didn't trigger his attack. He could channel his violence into any personality, really, though vampire fiction may have inspired it.

And the soccer moms instantly roll in and blame the world. How can anyone say that writing books about fantasy like Vampires is bad? It's not the authors fault that some people can't handle fiction. Metallix, so you want people to stop writing fantasy books? Well I'll tell you 2 things.

1. Nonfiction can be just as bad or worse than fiction.

2. You and the soccer moms will never stop this, it's freedom of speech to say or write anything you want in a book.

=SB= Sonic Logic Theorist.
This reminds me of that old topic on how some teenagers thought it would be cool to bite each other like vampires...except 5 times stupider and more ridiculous :|

Anyways, as for how Media is involved, while that might be the case, we also have to take consideration that the person in question probably (like some other people who end up giving people ammo for the blame game against video games and other media) believes what he sees and ends up doing it.

In short, this guy probably believed what he saw on television/books, and ended up thinking such, I don't want to end up blaming media, but I am mostly blaming the people who take to heart what they see and end up doing what this guy here did.

The most important meal of the day
This has been happening since at least the late 80's early 90's. It was mainly associated with goths and cults and underground punklands. I remember a while ago someone wrote a book about how teens were affected by media focusing on the supernatural and they blamed the show "Charmed" (that one show with Alyssa Milano)for most teens dressing and acting like witches and demons and vampires. I thought it was amusing. It seems people just blame whatever's popular at the time.

My older brother used to be into this sort of extreme level of Roleplay. Mind you, it was done with a sense of reality in mind. This guy on the other hand took the Laws of the Night rule book way too damn seriously. He's just mentally ill and someone's looking to make a good profitable law suit where they can at the expense of media inspirations. That's if they can get him to choke up some kind of hint that the latest in Vampire themed entertainment's the cause of this psychotic behavior.

Seems completely ridiculous to be pinning entertainment as the rudimentary cause of behavior. If this was the mentality necessary to deciding who to punish, then we should be punishing retired or dead presidents for inspiring bank robberies.
And just in case someone didn't understand that.

That sounds about right. Media blowing things out of proportion, but I mean should that really be a surprise? -shrugs- Gotta make chatter somehow. :D
