Jesse's horse lead him to the city a few miles north of his farm. He looked back as he was leaving and noticed that Scarlet Forest was looking especially lush and healthy that day. Maybe it was a sign that things to come would be better. As he rode he counted his money, discovering that he had 32 silver coins and 22 gold coins. He sighed in annoyance at his lack of coin and bucked his horse to go faster. Soon he reached the city's gate and paid the toll of three silver coins to get in.

He hitched his horse in a stable not far from the gate and took his supplies from his horse's saddle and headed toward the farmers market; lugging his supplies the whole way. Soon Jesse reached a number of shops before seeing a weapons shop which he usually looked in. There was a long sword displayed prominately in the window that he had been eyeing for months. His father had taught him basic swordplay when he was younger and he wouldn't mind having a sword for himself if anything ever happened. Most of the other citizens he saw walking around carried weapons as Scarlet City was home to many an adventurer. Then he noticed a sign in the window.

ALL SWORDS 50% OFF

Jesse realized that if he was to ever buy a sword now would be the time. He entered the shop quickly and went to the counter. He pointed to the sword on display in the window, his eyes full of excitement.

"How much is that sword?" He asked eagerly; gazing at the shop keeper. He was a man of about forty-five. He was sort of fat and balding and wore typical merchants clothes. He grinned, rubbing his chin thoughtfully before sticking one of his fat fingers in his ear for a moment.

"Well normally it's 35 gold coins but today it's half off so I can give it to you for 17 gold coins and 50 silver coins." Jesse was glad that he now had enough money to get the weapon and paid the man. He recieved the weapon and beamed at the condition it was in. It was well taken care of and didn't look like it had been used. "and I think I'll throw in this sheathe just because I've seen you eyeing this sword for so long." He gave Jesse a sheathe for his blade and Jesse nodded his thanks.

He exited the shop and headed for the farmer's market again. He reached the market in a relatively short period of time and set up his shop. He sold most of his produce for 10 silver coins, his eggs for 15 silver coins per six eggs and some meat for 20 silver coins a pound. It wasn't the most profitable work but Jesse didn't care that day. He was too busy admiring his new sword. He noticed another shop that was open that seemed to be selling potions and such. The owner was just finishing up with a customer. Jesse waved at the other owner before tending to his own business.

Ki didn't even have to think before he lugged a small bag of coins onto the counter. He looked at the items before them and inspected them as if he needed them in tip top shape. He focused more on the rice paper and the gold oil more than anything.

"Here is extra... For your services." He tells the merchant as he tore a piece of the rice paper out. He then laid it flat on the counter and placed the gold oil on it to hold the top of the sheet down.

"I require your assistance. This is why I'm giving you 40 coins more than needed." He tells the young man as he started to wrap the silk around one of the nails he dug out of the box.

"Place your hand on the center of sheet... Please." He tells the young lad as he started to wrap his the third nail with a piece of silk, making show the entire nail was completely covered just like the other two nails were.

"While you're at it," He starts off as he paused what he was doing to reach into his pocket and get out a piece of paper and a black chalk in the shape of a small pencil.

"Copy these symbols onto the rice paper before you set your hand on it." He tells him as he contained to wrap the third nail, only to move onto the fourth one as he waited for the young one to do what he asked. This young merchant was about to witness Ki perform a bit of a magic, or at least that is what others call it. Ki knows its called mushi awakening, but people wouldn't know that. Not everyone can see mushi until them are transformed or awakened.

Brendan waved back at Jesse as he slowly picked up the bag Kirby placed on his counter. He then turned to the bag and began counting the coins it contained carefully as his customer began inspecting the merchandise. The young man soon noticed, however, that there were still plenty of coins left in the bag by the time he counted 53 coins.

He looked at the coins confused, wondering if he had miscounted. But before he had a chance to restart counting them, Kirby spoke.

"Oh... well... I'm afraid I'm a little busy here and-"

The merchant scratched the back of his head a little nervously, then reached for the sheet of paper.

"Sure..." he said softly before doing as the doctor asked. This was probably the strangest customer he had ever had, but doing him the favor shouldn't take much of his time nor should it cause any harm.

It was a bit confusing finding all of the addresses, but Adrick seemed to manage well enough. It turned out that his family had acted as a sort of middle man to deliver many precious metals and other materials for various smiths and shops. He had decided that he would deliver the satchel last, since it seemed to be the most interesting package he carried. After finally finishing all of his deliveries, he looked down at his paper of addresses and almost cringed, as he was to deliver the contents of the satchel to a stall in a farmer's market, a potion shop.

Eventually, he found his way to the shop and noticed that the shopkeep was a little busy, but didn't pay much mind to it.

"Uhm, excuse me sir.." he looked at the slip of paper for a name. "Uhm.. Brenden?.. I have a package for you, from the Vickroys. Special delivery." He opened the satchel, excited that he was finally going to see what was inside, but found it was in another bag.

"I'll just.. hold onto it until you're done with whatever it is that you're doing. I guess." He awkwardly said, standing behind the customer. He peered over the older man's shoulder, trying to get a look at what they were doing.

Five nails all wrapped in silk. By the time he was done the young lad had done as the mushi master asked him to. Ki then stabs the five nails into the sheet of paper, making sure the silk was tightly wrapped around each nail first. He soon wraps an extra piece of silk around the nails and stretches it so it touched both the wrapped nails and the young lad's hand. Once that was done he wrote the same thing Brenden did on another sheet of rice paper.

"This is going to feel a bit weird. However, I'll ask that you not move you hand." he tells the young merchant as he opened the gold oil. He pour some over the young merchant's hand quickly placed the sheet or rice paper he wrote on. The pieces of paper suddenly comes alive and wrap themselves tightly around the boy's hand. However, the bottom piece couldn't completely wrap around the boy's hand as it was nailed to the table.

"You..." Ki spoke to the other boy who came to deliver a package for Brenden. Ki's eye fixed on the boy sternly as he looked him up an down.

"Name a creature or animal, but do it quickly." Ki orders Adrick as he narrowed his eyes a bit. Once Adrick would name a creature or animal, Brenden's wrapped hand would glow and suddenly produce a small 'baby' version or said animal or creature. The paper, the oil, the silk, and even the nails would come together to awaken this mushi that Ki needed for his journey. Truth is, this mushi Ki was awakening was all around them, yet he managed to treat it like a shikigami and summon it to its awaken form. In its awaken form, it can transform into whatever its order to. This mushi that is normally harmless and unseen by many will now be seen by all and transformed, once Adrick states what it shall turn into that is.

Jesse did business with a couple of people; most making rather large orders. He felt like it was his lucky day and before long he had doubled the money he had set out from his home with. He looked over at the potion shop again; he usually visited the shop owner at some point in the day. He saw that there were no customers around anywhere anymore save for the one Brendan was talking to and the delivery guy standing awkwardly to the side of them.

Just as Jesse was about to go over and see what was up, a loud horn was heard. Some shouts could be heard in the distance before smoke could be seen billowing from the farmland in the distance. A soldier ran through the farmer's market, fully equipped for battle.

"HEY GET INSIDE YOUR HOMES, THE CITY IS UNDER ATTACK!" The soldier called to them and continued to run toward the smoke. More soldiers came after him, all heading in the same direction. Jesse wasn't sure what to do. He thought about his farmland, which was located in the direction the smoke came from. He thought of his horse in the stable and then he felt angry. His whole life was about to be taken from him.

Just as he was about to draw his sword and run headlong into battle, a man in a long robe walked toward them. He had a long grey beard and his hood was all the way up. His eyes were shadowed and he seemed to stare into the eyes of everyone there. He lifted an arm and pointed at the four of them.

"You four..." He wheezed in a deep voice. "come with me... If you want... the Scarlet Kingdom... to rise again..." He spoke quitely, the air around him seemed calm and empty. "You may be our only hope... I sense... something on the four... of you..." Jesse looked to the old man and listened to his words. He felt like he spoke sense and decided that whatever he had to say might be better then running headlong into battle.

"Alright I'll go with you.." Jesse decided, stepping forward ready for the old man to lead him.

Adrick watched the procedure before him attentively, wondering what could possibly be going on and was startled when the paper seemed to come alive. He was getting ready to either back away or watch closer, when the older man spoke.

Quote:

"You..."

Adrick froze in place while the man appeared to look him over, not really knowing what to expect.

Quote:

"Name a creature or animal, but do it quickly."

"Uh.. Uhm" he hesitated for a moment, but then spoke of the first animal that came to mind. "I guess.. An otter?.. I don't know.. Why do you ask me?" He took a closer look, but was shaken by the sound of a loud horn. He looked away from the table to see a soldier, fully dressed for battle, yelling out that the city was under attack.

He was about ready to leave when he heard it, only to realize all of the soldiers were going in the direction of the way he came.

"Damnit, I don't need this right now" he muttered, turning to make his way through a crowd to check out the battle and estimate how long he would need to wait to go home, but nearly bumped into an old man, who spoke to the group at Brendan's stall.

Adrick had no idea what to do, or say, someone was telling him that he was included in the only hope for a once mighty kingdom to rise to power once more. "This guy's crazy, who does he think he is?.." He thought to himself, backing up slightly and thought of the situation. His path home was currently blocked and he had nothing better to do, anything could be more fun than working at home. Adrick was always an opportunist and this seemed like a great opportunity to get away from home.

"Fine, old man, I will listen to what you have to say, I will follow you."

Brendan smiled his greeting to Adrick as the young man arrived to deliver his package from the Vickroys. "Yes, if you could give me a second... Thanks."

"Holy...!" he muttered with awe and fright as the paper began to wrap around his hand. He didn't understand how the man had managed to do this, or what it even was. The young merchant tried to contain himself as Kirby asked Adrick to name an animal.

Very nervously, Adrick named an otter, and soon enough Brendan found a baby otter in his hand. He quickly let go of the small animal and took a step back. He quickly inspected his hand, and it seemed to be all right. His eyes met with those of Kirby again as he looked at him confused. He couldn't quite comprehend what had been the purpose of making an animal out of thin air and he certainly couldn't understand how it was possible to do so.

Before he could say a single word, however, the horn blew.
Quote:

"HEY GET INSIDE YOUR HOMES, THE CITY IS UNDER ATTACK!"

"Oh no..." the young man muttered as he wasted no time in cleaning up his counter, taking the otter with caution and abruptly handing it to Kirby before reaching for the propped door. He had yet to close it, when an old man walked in on the group.

This old man asked for him, Kirby, Adrick and Jesse to follow him, apparently to save everyone.

Things just get stranger and stranger... Brendan thought to himself. However, being the compliant young fellow he is, he couldn't quite work up the nerve to deny the stranger.

He closed the shop and exited through the back, approaching Jesse and Adrick shyly. "I suppose you can count on me..."

"An... An otter?" Ki spoke as his eye twitched out of annoyance and a bit of anger. The mushi master was expecting something more deadly or fearful than an otter. Either way, the otter formed in the merchants hand and yawned as it was placed on the table. This baby otter was just a shell after all, to which Ki just shrugged his shoulders at the look of the otter. Before the mushi master could speak, a solider ordered everyone to stay inside. Of course, whenever Ki was told something he would normal disobey said command, even more so when he is told not to go somewhere. Once the merchant handed him the baby otter it raced up his arm and propped itself onto his shoulder. It pointed out the door and growled a bit.

"Newly formed and you're already bossing me around huh... Don't forget who is the mushi master here..." Ki told the otter as he walked outside. He came out just in time to see a robed figure telling the four of them something.

"I'm not worried about the kingdom. In all honesty, I can careless about it." Ki states, the only one to object to this robed figures speech. Ki didn't care what happened to the kingdom, or any kingdom at that. All he cared about was the mushi and spirits living within these parts. He cared about stopping this Grave Keeper for making such a mess of things and cause an unbalance with the mushis and spirits.

"However, I'm guessing this is going to lead to over throwing the Grave Keeper somehow, seeing as he, or it, now runs the place. In order to have the Scarlet Kingdom rise again, tall dark and ugly is going to have to go... In other words, count me in... but don't confusion my intentions for joining, I'm not a hero." Ki tells the robed figure as he crossed his arms.

The old man grinned, his mouth wide and his rotting teeth baring in a creepy smile. He was aware of all of their intentions toward his offer and couldn't help but chuckle inwardly at Ki's obvious objection to being a hero. He beckoned forward and began to walk. The party of four followed him warily as he lead them throgh the twists and turns of Scarlet City's various alleyways. Jesse could smell the smoke now and feel the heat of the flames. The battle had broke into the city now and it seemed that Scarlet City would fall. An arrow flew past Ki's head, just missing it and sticking into a wall. They reached a dead end in the alleyway and the old man stopped.

"It's a dead end..." Jesse pointed out obviously, his voice wavering as he began to think that the old man had been decieving them. The old man muttered something inaudible under his breath and began to feel around on the wall. He found a brick he was looking for and touched it before carefully examining the wall again. He stroked his beard thoughtfully before tapping three more bricks. The wall split open; the bricks suspended in the air with magic. On the other side of the wall was a passageway leading into the dark catacombs under the city.

"Here is the way... out of Scarlet City... It leads right... into the forest.." He explained to them, not hesitating to hear what the four people he had recruited had to say about this he descended into the darkness. Jesse shrugged and followed after him.

They followed the man for what seemed like hours until finally they reached another dead end. The old man stopped and stroked his beard again for a moment. He turned around to them and stared each of them in the eyes again. He stood silently, just staring at them for a few moments as he looked them over. He was unsure of the four of them, he could sense that none of them were ready quite yet. It would be a difficult task to get them ready but there wasn't much that he could do about it until they left this passageway. The sleeve on his cloak fell a bit and his bony pale white hand was revealed.

"Stand back.." He muttered before putting his hand out in front of the wall. He muttered an incantation of sorts and his hand began to glow green with magic. The bricks in the wall rearranged and formed an opening for them to walk through. "Before we enter... are there any questions... if you'd like to leave.. now would be the time... however... the city above us... is doomed..." The old man wheezed out his long sentance.

Brendan had followed the old man the entire way, even through the catacombs, and up until they reached the second brick wall. At this point, the old man had given him a choice: continue onwards into the forest and to some sort of journey or go back to the doomed city.

The young man fret for the people of the city. If it was really in peril, then there were many lives at stake. Unfortunately, going back as he is right now would be of little to no use to anyone. He wasn't strong enough to fight off the threat. He was barely strong enough to fight at all. The poor lad had never been much of a violent soul, nor did have any sort of inclination towards.

Now, however, it seemed he needed to fight back. And this old man apparently wanted to have his hand in helping him learn how to do all this. Finally convinced, Brendan took a deep breath and armed himself with valor before taking a step forward.

"I'll go, no questions asked."

Adrick was unsure and slightly frightened, faced with the choice of either following the man and finding out what was in store, or heading back into the certain death that was the fall of Scarlet City. He knew it was not really a choice, but he still had questions and wanted answers.

"I will go, but I want to know some things; what waits in store for us on the outside of this passage? How are we even prepared to cause the rise of a long dead kingdom and, of course, what's in it for me? What exactly am I even going to get out of this? It seems like this is going to be pretty dangerous and I don't want to do this for nothing." He looked at the old man, waiting for his answer. There was no way he as risking his life for nothing and he was sure that this would all involve some kind of violence.

"As if you're even giving us a choice." Ki spoke up as he joined the rest that said they'll go. He didn't like this old robed figure very much. He randomly shows up just to ask if they'll help restore this lost and darkened kingdom, and just so happen to have the four people he wanted be in the same spot at the same time... To Ki, this was just random and weird, which in itself is weird for Ki to think this way. After all, his job entitles a lot of random and odd events that he would encounter and hopefully solve. Dealing with spirits, magic, and mushi isn't always a planned adventure.

"What now?" Ki asked, waiting for the old robed figure to push onward.

Jesse wasn't reluctant to go forward, in fact he embraced it. He was tired of his boring old farm life and felt that this might be his chance to really do something that mattered. Besides the fact that his home is destroyed anyway and that it was The Grave Keeper's fault, Jesse couldn't pass up this oppertunity and volunteered with no hesitation.

"What do you mean what's in it for you? You're home is destroyed! Don't you want revenge...?" Jesse spoke angrily at Adrick, annoyed at the selfish words of a fellow native to this city.

The old man shook his head at the actions of the three of them; Brendan seeming to be the only one who wasn't overcome with emotion, lack of interest or selfishness by this point. Could the fate of the kingdom really rely on these four?

"This will all... be revealed to you... soon enough... but I can tell you that... we are headed into... a base in... Scarlet Forest... where the resistence has been hiding... for seven hundred years..." He turned and stepped through the passageway; leading directly into the basement of the base the old man had previously spoke of.

As the party of four stepped in after him; each having accepted this task one way or another, a mark appeared on each of their right hands. It was a circle with a spear through it and the old man's suspicions were confirmed. They were in fact the ones he was looking for.

They followed him up the stairs into another room. The old man quickly opened the door and closed it behind them; leaving the four on the other side of it. Jesse stared at the door, puzzled by the man's actions. If he wanted their help why did he close the door on them? Jesse turned the knob and stepped into a room. A couple of men and women sat around the room, each dressed in leather armor.

A man stood in the center of the room, his hair was long and red and he wore the only steel armor that Jesse could see in the room. On his waist was the sheathe of a broadsword and on his back was a quiver full of arrows as well as a bow. He grinned as he saw the four step in.

"Welcome young heroes to the base of the resistence!" He shook each of their hands seperately, apparently overcome with joy that the heroes had shown themselves and that the kingdom has a chance of rising again. "I am Sequoia Reedwood, the current leader of the Scarlet Resistence. Pleased to meet all of you."

Jesse spoke first; slightly wary of the warm and sudden greeting but happy to have been treated so hospitably regardless. He shook Sequoia's hand firmly before opening his mouth.

"We all have some questions... But what exactly makes us so special? I mean isn't it just a little too coincidental that we were all in the same market place when the Grave Keeper's forces attacked?" He asked inquisitively.

It didn't take Brendan long to notice the marking on his right hand. He kept staring through the remainder of the little trip the group took to the base of the resistance. It had distracted him in such as way that he almost tripped on one of his companions several times, and nearly even walked into the door as the old man closed it before him and the other three.

It was just then that he looked at the door confused. Why had the old man left them standing there? He figured the old man expected them to wait for his return, and decided to keep his hands to himself. Still, that didn't stop Jesse from opening it and going in.

Brendan hesitated following him until he heard Sequoia giving them a warm welcome, at which point he slowly made his way inside. The minute he was in, he was greeted by an excited handshake, which seemed to cheer him up and even help him relax a little.
