Police patrols had gathered around the hotel down the street. Morning had risen, revealing that several glass windows up and down the building had been smashed, some with a bit of blood in them.

Outside the designated crime scene stood a sugar glider, his arms crossed and a not-so-happy look on his face.

"What was your name again, sir?" asked the detective.

"Bailforde Johan," he said a little exasperated.

"Mr. Johan, I need all the details you can give me."

"My friend, Eddisa Gibson, and I rented a room; by morning, she had vanished," he explained grimly. "Our room was a disaster and there was a trail of destruction and blood leading out and down to the lobby."

"So we got another one?" the detective muttered.

"Another what?"

"Several households, apartments and other homes have been the scenes of apparent break-ins, and a lot of people have been disappearing," the detective answered. "It's possible we're dealing with a string of kidnappings."

((For the record, the detective's a NPC, so feel free to use him.))

In another hotel not too far from where the crime scene had taken place, a young squirrel was cursing her luck. "Oh come on! Don't tell me this thing lost it's connection again!" She placed her head in her paws. "Where is Walter when you need him?"

A tiger of around her age appeared around the corner. "Computer issues again, Violet?"

"It's not funny, Timber. This darn thing just refuses to keep the connection for more than five minutes!"

Timber shrugged. "Shouldn't you be worried about something else?"

Violet turned to look at him, not at all amused by this. "Something else? Like what?"

The tiger pointed at the tv, where the news of the recent string of disappearances was the headline of the day. "Oh, I don't know. Perhaps what's on the news?"

"Could you explain to me how it is possible that your room was turned upside-down and you never noticed?" the detective questioned as he continued scribbling up notes.

"I didn't hear or feel anything," Bailforde swore. "I know it sounds crazy, maybe even impossible, but it's the truth. One moment we're wishing each other a good night's sleep, the next I wake up during the morning at the sound of the clock's alarm and find everything thrashed."

Having finished his explanation, the marsupial sighed heavily and brushed his hair back. He looked down from side to side, uneasily.

"It... it doesn't make any sense," he continues. "I should have been able to hear her putting up a struggle or something, but I didn't."

"Don't beat yourself up," the law enforcer said. "No one else in the building heard anything and there's enough evidence to support that she fought off the assaulter all the way down to the lobby.

"In fact," the man adds, "no one living in or near the scenes of the other disappearances have ever heard or felt anything. They just wake up to seeing the place wide open, with an occasional sign of a struggle."

When Violet took notice of what was on the TV, her computer issues seemed much less of, well, an issue. In fact, her connection problems were like an annoying gnat that never seemed to go away in comparision to the spider that was the recent string of dissapearances. And in this web of unexplained crimes, there was but one thing for a violet-furred squirrel and a sky-blue tiger to do.

"Timber, get your stuff ready. We've got work to do."

The Mobian took a step back in surprise, holding his paws up in the universal 'who me?' pose. "What? Wait, you're not thinking what I think you're thinking, are you?"

The squirrel nodded. "You bet I am. Come on, this is a great oppurtunity for us!"

"I don't know Violet..."

Violet heaved a heavy sigh. "I honestly can't believe your father was Drake McStrype..."

The sugar glider stared in pure shock at the detective. "And you don't have the slightest idea of who could be behind them?!"

"I'm afraid not," he said. "We've investigated the scenes from top to bottom; checked every little corner for clues or traces of any kind, but we've found nothing.

"The only prints, the only blood, the only hairs, the only traces," he continued, "they all belong to the victims; there's never anything we can link to the perpetrators."

"So... we're dealing with a criminal mastermind?" Bailforde asked, a little breathless in his frustration.

"Or several," replied the man. "We really don't know..."

It was not at all an easy task, but Violet finallly managed to drag Timber out of the hotel and into the outside world. Of course, even outside, the tiger was still hesitant.

"Violet, are you sure this is such a good idea?"

The squirrel, for the umpteenth time that day, heaved a long-suffering sigh. "I'm positive, Timber. Look, nothing's going to happen. Well, at least not now I mean. Later we could, and probably will, get in some trouble. But that's the fun in this!"

The tiger shook his head. "You call this fun?" He looked to the heavens as if seeking answers. "Why can't I have a normal life?"

Bailforde sat on a bench outside of the hotel. His face was sunk deep in his hands.

He was freaking out in the inside. Eddisa had always been the more capable of the two; any big predicament, she'd handle it, and as always, she'd come out on top. There had never been a situation too big for her to solve. That's why she called the shots in their team. He couldn't imagine her needing help, not winning a fight.

But now she had been attacked and kidnapped. She needed help, she was in a predicament she couldn't solve on her own. What was he going to do?

For the longest time Violet and Timber walked in silence as they made thier way through the city. Along the way, they could see the aftermath of the recent string of disappearances. People were in shock, worried not only for themselves, but for the friends and family they had lost in this chaos.

Violet shook her head. "Sad, isn't it?" she asked, turning to Timber.

"Yes, yes it is," the tiger answered, taking a moment to glance around at the sights of the city. It was then that his eyes fell on a sugar glider sitting on a bench outside a hotel. He elbowed Violet in the ribs to get her attention.

"Ow, what was that for?"

Timber said nothing, but pointed to the sugar glider. Violet's features softened and she silently approached the young Mobian.

Bailforde was still caught up in his own grief when Violet approached him. He remained still for several minutes. When he moved his hands in order to rub his aching head, he noticed someone stood before him.

He quickly raised his head and looked at them expectantly.

"What? What is it?" He didn't knew who they were, but it didn't matter if they had something important or useful to share with him.

For the longest of times, the sugar glider continued to sit there, head buried in his paws. After a while, Violet began to get impatient; sure she understood he was upset and all, but she wondered if it would kill him to raise his head for just a second. Perhaps he could help shed some insight on these disappearances.

At long last, the grief-stricken Mobian moved his hands away from his face - and quickly raised his head up when he realized there was someone standing before him.

What? What is it?

Violet kneeled down before him, resting her paw on the armrail of the bench. "Excuse me. I couldn't help but notice you look upset about something."

The marsupial sighed heavily and rested his head on one of his hands.

"Yes, I... I am..." he said as he rubbed his head and looked back at Violet. "My friend's gone missing."

"Just like all those people were heard about on the news," Timber whispered, mostly to himself, but within earshot of the other two Mobians.

"Are you two..." Bailforde started as he heard Timber comment on the other disappearances, "detectives or something of the sort?"

They appeared young to be detectives, though he didn't shrug the possibility. Anyone who looked at Eddisa probably wouldn't believe someone so young to be an experienced mercenary, yet she is.

Are you two...detectives or something of the sort?

"Eh, something like that," Timber said, shrugging slightly. He still wasn't sure about all this; in truth, he would much rather have liked to stay back at the hotel and helped to fix Violet's computer.

The squirrel on the other hand, decided to tell it like it was. "In a way, yes. We're Violet Conifirn and Timber McStrype of the Oakland Resistance Division."

"I see."

The sugar glider stared at them thoughtfully then added. "If there's any way I can help, any way at all, please let me know right away."
