Though fangaming has been a large part of the Sonic community for a long time, much of the Sonic fanbase is showing a weakened interest in fangaming. Since there are too many fangames to list in a poll, I'd like the members to share their thoughts on fangaming as a whole (along with some of your memories of fangaming). I, for one, remember the late days of Sonic Fan Games HQ's hosting on Emulation Zone. Though the host site was crumbling due to few updates and many of the developers seemed to disappear (Gregorsoft, for example. Stealth's page was pretty inactive, too, to name a few.) I was a fresh young AOLer, complete with numbers in my usernames. When I first learned of SFGHQ, I downloaded all the games I could with my connection, my only transfer device a few CD-Rs. I always dreamed of downloading Sonic Adventure Gaiden. As I observe the fangames hosted there, I noticed that an overwhelming majority was developed in the early 2000s. Was this a golden time for fangaming? Was fan interest high at that time? Was SFGHQ inactivity just causing an illusion of stasis? Has Sonic Retro and its hacking stolen the floor? I don't know, but it seems many of you are much older than me. I would really love to know everyone's impression on fangaming, its past, the current state of affairs, and your impressions of what the fangaming future would be like. |

I don't know where I'm going.

This is an interesting subject. Fangaming is actually what brought me into the Sonic Community. Not as a player, but as a programmer. SFGHQ was very huge. It was the first community I was a part of. Game Maker ver. 5.1 made it's way to my computer a little over 5 months before I joined. One of the very first things I did was make a fangame called Sonic and Espio which used Kain's Basic Sonic Platforming Tutorial in DnD and GML as the core engine for the game. It was the absolute worst fangame ever seen Thanks to members on the forum such as null1024 and Rael0505 however, I eventually began to shine in Game Maker programming, learning the coding styles of Damizean and GamerGuy and developed a knack for creating cutscenes. The cutscene programming prowess I had eventually landed me on a programming team for the fangame Sonic Adventure: Remix. Maybe some here have heard of it, but it was supposed to be a recreation of Sonic Adventure in 2D platforming with it's own twists to give the game that extra pizz-azz. Anyway, the game caught the attention of Sonic Cage Dome, and with the help of GamerGuy and SCD's owner Zizou, the site opened up a branch to add to their network called Sonic Cage Dome Technical Institute. The Institute worked on 3 major projects; Sonic Adventure: Remix (GamerGuy), Super Sonic Knockout (Project Shadowblaze), Pure Shadow (Benniantor). All three games had a great deal of attention. My project, Pure Shadow, was my very best project. Progress was slow, however, as I wanted to make a full cinematic fangame. I got the engine done, the opening, titles, first 4 levels and a minigame. I gave the engine to someone else and they never finished the project. It sucks, but it's whatever. I retired but I am honored as an ex-programmer at STi (Sonic Technical Institute). The whole point of my story as a programmer was the simple fact that I have noticed major unpopularity in fangaming since I did become a fangamer in 2006. Take this forum for example. This is probably one of the most active forums I have ever seen. I've been a member of this forum since 2006. I am the only programmer I know on this forum. And this community is home to members who made more than 800,000 total posts! For the five years I've been a member here, I am the only fangamer I know on this forum. It's crazy to think that. Yes, I do miss the days when fangaming was popular. I remember the release of Damizean's 360 Engine in Game Maker 6.1 and Clwe's fangame One Girl Army on SFGHQ. Projects like Slingerland's Sonic Nexus and Emerald Ties: Crossing Fates were simply stunning. I even played this fangame called Sonic One-Shot. It was a fangame where Sonic had a gun! But it was very cinematic, very smooth, and very very fun. I wish there were more anticipation for fangames nowadays though. The biggest fangames in the works that I can think of at the moment are Super Sonic Knockout and Sonic 2 HD. And Sonic 2 HD might not even be a fangame. I think it's a hack. Yes though, I do miss the popularity of fangames. Edited by LacenMC, Jun 29 2011, 07:22 AM.

Well, S2HD is a fangame, not a hack. I loved Clwe's fangames, especially his scrapped Sonc DIY, which I put on my younger cousin's computer. I really can't find the reason for the loss in fangaming, but I suppose 6 years is like a whole generation of fans. I don't know when the Sonic Hacking scene first got big, but it seems like hacks were featured in SAGE 08. |
