What is the difference between a duck?

Why doesn't the government step in with these kinds of matters? It may seem trivial, but it's psychos like this who are good with computers that will likely try to hack into a government computer and launch a nuke. It even says these LulzSUCK guys compromised Senate computers. All I will say is that we're ****ed if government officials let dopes like them do what they want. I mean seriously, isn't there an Internet Security Agency or something for these kind of problems?
There is already an investigation going on, there's a lot of tracing to many sources that has to be done as navigating internet paths is very tricky.

As for compromising computers and launching nukes.. HIGHLY HIGHLY unlikely (more like impossible), a congressional computer and a military computer are two very very different things, and beyond that, all nuclear launch sequences throughout the world are activated via manual means... typically by turning sets of paired keys to activate launch sites, and the computers attached to these machines are attached only to those machines and are not connected to a network and, probably, aren't even compatible with home computers on any level.. in short.. you CANNOT set off a nuclear bomb by hacking the government even if you do somehow manage to get into the mainframe of the military here or anywhere for that matter.

That too, but I figured I'd just squash even the slightest reason for fear of that. =p

Clarification is always a good idea, Bowie. |P Kills needless panic.

BUT, while the pattern I'm seeing from Lulzsec suggest that they're -- I'm not going to say harmless, because some people have been caught in the crossfire and had info leaked -- they aren't especially malicious. However, they're quite clearly showing that security in many places simply isn't up to snuff -- which if not fixed could be an open door to people with genuinely malicious intent.

So these guys aren't really dangerous. Just really, really good and really, really bored.

Hopefully. I like the idea of hacking companies' websites and letting them know that their security sucks. I'm a PS fan, but I'm pretty appauld with Sony... wouldn't know how crappy their "security" was/is without LulzSec. I think we're particularly lucky in a sense.

Perhaps, but honestly, I'm never comfortable making heroes of hackers.

I disagree. The fact that they've hacked several game companies shows that it's not just Sony that has security flaws. Even Live got hacked recently.

Do you really think LulzSec/Anonymous helped Sony out? They maliciously attacked them and made them take down their network. They uncovered security flaws but it's not like someone else doing the same later would have hurt them more, it would have been the same fiasco no matter the attackers.

Seriously - you try building a wall when people are constantly going at it with picks and drills. Sony actually did a good job in cutting off the services as soon as they found there had been a breach, and calling in a big security firm to investigate the situation. This happens. NO system is perfect, no security precautions can hold up to any and every attack. I think they need to cover the holes they had, but, as I've said before, this could have been a lot worse.

As for what Neo said...well, I do think it could have been worse. Lulzsec _are_ dangerous, just like any anonymous group out there - they aren't doing this for altruism, they're doing it because _they can._ BUT they could have done a lot worse than just take the network offline a while. They could have walked away with a lot of consumer info -- but that didn't seem to be their goal. This time.

Vlad's right about trusting hackers. Maybe they mean well, maybe they don't -- the point is _we can't assume_. They are getting people caught in the crossfire. Hacking in to show the holes is roughly like one country invading another just to show how weak their defense is. They could easily have done what they did with the NHS, just send an email or even just deface a website, instead of leaking people's private data.

The more info I read about them, the more my view is shifting concerning these guys. I still don't like them, but give it a little thought, one could say LulzSec is the Batman of the internet, meaning a needed hero that no one wamts. I still do not like or support their actions for the fact that about anyone would be in the middle of one of their hack jobs, I'm merely speculating aloud.

I admire them, but they are in no way heroes. While it's true that it could have been much worse, that doesn't mean it'll happen. and they DID run off with consumer info from what I'm gathering. They're just not using it for themselves. They've released lots of info onto the web. They are definitely not necessary. They take requests for (D)DoS and other hacks. While it appears they don't have strength in numbers, they are worse than Anonymous. Anonymous always gives a reason. LulzSec has no even half-just reason to do what they are.
But at least they're not getting carried away. They're releasing consumer information, and that is very dangerous, but their exploit on the National Health Service seems to suggest they don't intend to break anything of value.

Xbox Live was not hacked..

VGRevolution

The internet was set ablaze a short time ago with numerous reports about Xbox Live accounts being hacked by the hacker group LulzSec, who have been in the new as of late. These reports are spawned by many sites not doing their homework. Yesterday LulzSec released a text file with 62,000+ email addresses and passwords to undisclosed accounts. The group didn’t mention where the account info was from, but it’s more then likely from one of their recent hacks against such companies as Sony BMG.

Again Xbox Live was NOT hacked by the group (at least not yet, as it’s always possible) but the issue is that people with this file have been going to sites and services like Xbox Live and trying the email and password combination in the file. And because MANY people use the same password for multiple accounts people are gaining access to other people’s Xbox Live accounts. But the thing is this isn’t only an issue with Xbox Live, people could technically gain access to any account that uses the email/password combos on that list.

So don’t worry unless you are in that very small group of emails on the text file right now you are fine. However with all the recent hacks occurring I can’t stress enough that everyone should CHANGE their passwords, and they now more then ever need to create unique passwords for each and every online account.

Once again LulzSec DID NOT hack Xbox Live, and MANY gaming sites are just stirring a very volatile pot!o
