Hackers Target Other Games

I'm not sure who heard about this, but I imagine most of you who play these games did. I found out when I was over at my b/f's discussing some games.

The people behind the Sony hacking, Lulzsec, decided to hack The Escapist, Minecraft, EVE Online, League of Legends (I've also heard Dungeons and Dragons Online was hacked along with a couple others)

LulzSec Attacks Gaming Sites ... Just for Laughs

By Robert McMillan, IDG News

The hacking group known as LulzSec called it Titanic Takeover Tuesday. Gamers called it by a variety of names, many of which cannot be reprinted here. But for system administrators at a handful of gaming companies, Tuesday, June 14 was a nightmare: the day their websites went down under an online attack.

LulzSec took down systems at the Escapist, Eve Online, Minecraft and League of Legends Tuesday during a three-hourlong distributed denial-of-service rampage that left gamers annoyed and the Lulz hackers crowing.

"Welcome to #TitanicTakeoverTuesday where everyone is laughing at crybabies getting Lulz Cannoned!" the hacking group said during one of its many Twitter messages documenting the online assault.

LulzSec emerged out of nowhere last month and immediately embarked on a series of high-profile hacking attacks, stealing data from Sony and game-maker Bethesda Softworks and compromising computers at the U.S. Senate and the Public Broadcasting Service, among others.

Unlike the better-known Anonymous hacking group, LulzSec doesn't appear to have any particular political motivation behind its attacks. The group takes its name from Lulz -- hacker speak for "laughs" -- and often appears to be hacking just for the fun of it.

Tuesday's attack started at the Escapist, an online magazine whose forums had swelled with angry comments after the Bethesda hack. "I want them caught and punished, a few years in jail for people like that would be hell," wrote Escapist forum member Psychicflash666 before the site was taken down.

An Escapist spokesman said that access to the company's website was "intermittent" for three hours Tuesday because of the attack. "Our system administrators are still reviewing the situation to assess whether anything occurred other than a DDoS attack," he said in an e-mail message.

After its attack on the Escapist, LulzSec invited people to call in via telephone and recommend new targets. It then began attacking gaming sites Eve Online, Minecraft and League of Legends. The hackers also said that they hit FinFisher, an IT intrusion monitoring company owned by Gamma Group.

Late Tuesday Eve Online and the Escapist websites remained offline, but League of Legends, Minecraft and FinFisher were all operational.

"And that concludes our DDoS party: Escapist Magazine, Eve Online, Minecraft, League of Legends + 8 phone requests. #TitanicTakeoverTuesday," LulzSec said in a Twitter message.

An hour later, LulzSec was again inviting followers to call in. "Now accepting calls from true lulz fans - let's all laugh together at... gamers. "

Why doesn't the government step in with these kinds of matters? It may seem trivial, but it's psychos like this who are good with computers that will likely try to hack into a government computer and launch a nuke. It even says these LulzSUCK guys compromised Senate computers. All I will say is that we're ****ed if government officials let dopes like them do what they want. I mean seriously, isn't there an Internet Security Agency or something for these kind of problems?

That's not all... Epic, Bethesda, and Nintendo have gotten hacked recently as well. Albeit those were websites and not servers for their games, but still.

Also hackers in Spain have gotten arrested and another location too but not much has been done on that end...

Interesting...

Either these guys have way too much time on their hands, or these servers are not protected as well as they should be.

And to think they're doing all of this just to get a reaction for their own amusement... No, why are they amused by such a thing in the first place?

Well, those kinds of people are far beyond my understanding. Let's just hope they don't do any serious damage and that they just go away, or heaven forbid, use those hacking talents to do something useful and constructive. The world doesn't have enough counter-hackers, for a start...

That's what I am thinking as well, but there are people in this world that just love making the lives for casual people harder just for a few laughs.

Imagine after a long stressful day at work, and you want to cool down to a nice relaxing online game with screaming eight years swearing like a bunch of pissed-off little chihuahuas. And then finding out that a bunch of hackers crashed the serves to piss everyone else off, including you after a stressful day. And just wanting to relax to that particular game. Just for a 'good' laugh.

These people obviously have a lot of talent, or maybe none at all to be able to pull of such high profile attacks. If the former, then if they used it for constructive purposes rather than virtual terrorism towards gamers and the government alike, then we could all benefit from this. Then again, as you saidL "heaven forbid, use those hacking talents to do something useful and constructive." Because, these hackers obviously care more about their enjoyment than the benefit for others. If the latter, then these people seriously need to work on their security.

Still, whatever this LulzSec gets out of these hacks outside of laughs is not good at all. And these guys need to be dealt with soon, or the least they would do than just screwing with our games and our government's systems for a few laughs.

First, the way LulzSec referred to gamers suggested they see them as an unusual bunch or a minority. In other words, they find it easily justifiable. They don't see casual people sitting down for a while after a long day. The internet does not allow sadness, anger, and other emotions to be seen except by words. We're powerless to stop them from something like that morally, because they don't see us for who we are. (My god, I make it sound like gamers are being persecuted by LulzSec, which they're not.)
Also, the security breaches that they use are pretty simple. DDoS and a few SQL injects, maybe a bit more if they can think. Far short of legit ninja hackers, which don't try to advertise their presence. Mostly the reason that all the security sucks is that while we here a lot about internet terrorism and hacking, hacking is relatively unused compared to any legitimate real-life occupation, like thievery. That and that the Internet is young. Let's be surprised that they're covering their tracks so well.

Looks like they went after part of Sega. I got a nice email earlier at 8:50am PDT.

Dear Shenzi,

As you may be aware, the SEGA Pass system has been offline since yesterday, Thursday 16 June.

Over the last 24 hours we have identified that unauthorised entry was gained to our SEGA Pass database.

We immediately took the appropriate action to protect our consumers’ data and isolate the location of the breach. We have launched an investigation into the extent of the breach of our public systems.

We have identified that a subset of SEGA Pass members emails addresses, dates of birth and encrypted passwords were obtained. To stress, none of the passwords obtained were stored in plain text.

Please note that no personal payment information was stored by SEGA as we use external payment providers, meaning your payment details were not at risk from this intrusion.

If you use the same login information for other websites and/or services as you do for SEGA Pass, you should change that information immediately.

We have also reset your password and all access to SEGA Pass has been temporarily suspended.

Additionally we recommend you please take extra caution if you should receive suspicious emails that ask for personal or sensitive information.

Therefore please do not attempt to login to SEGA Pass at present, we will communicate when the service becomes available.

We sincerely apologise for this incident and regret any inconvenience caused.

We are contacting all our members with these recommendations.

If you have any further questions please contact SEGA customer support on csescalations@sega.com

The Sega Boards are also down with this message:
The site is currently offline while we carry out some essential maintenance. We are sorry for any inconvenience and expect it to be available very soon.

Fun stuff.

Again, it's obvious these gaming companies need to work on their security. I'd suggest trying to hire these guys to explain how they did it and to help make whatever they exploited unhackable.

From what I read Lulzsec is saying they didn't do this one and that they like Sega.

Lulzsec's twitter

"@Sega - contact us. We want to help you destroy the hackers that attacked you. We love the Dreamcast, these people are going down."

Honest or trolling? I can't say. But they've owned up to all their other attacks. It could have been them, another hacking group, or copycats. Either way, things are getting hella crazy.

This is becoming concerning. Recently, 4chan got taken down by Lulzsec.

Im afraid this is going to get out of hand soon.

4Chan?

Wow, maybe... I am highly amused* with LulzSec and I like how they post who they attack (although things like passwords and such we could do without), but 4Chan? Wow.

*Like the taking down of the CIA website. xDDD Really amusing to think about.

Buuuuuut, maybe LulzSec and related hackings will make Sega/Sony/anyone with a website check the security on it again.

Funny you should mention that.

As for things getting out of hand...last night I dug up the fact that Lulzsec has apparently found a way to breach the National Heath Services's network, though thankfully this seems to have been (relatively) benign. What they essentially did is send an email to the NHS detailing their security holes. Still, more than a bit worrisome.

Lulzsec - "No harm"

"While you aren't considered an enemy - your work is of course brilliant - we did stumble upon several of your admin passwords," the e-mail read.

It lists the stolen information - but blacks out the names in the tweet.

"We mean you no harm and only want to help you fix your tech issues," the mail continued.

Still looking into things -- suffice it to say that interesting things are afoot

I really want them to slip up. Eventually Anonymous will probably get angry once they hack the passwords of everyone and then there really will be war instead of support. NOT. Sad Fwiss is sad, but I can see why they're full of themselves. Sites really need to work on security.
This is why we can't have nice things.
