Legends are never forgotten. Over time, the details may change, and the truth may eventually be drowned in a sea of misinterpretation, but the legend itself is never forgotten.

A stone that can change one substance into another, be it liquid or solid, worthless or priceless.

A cup of never-ending water that can cure the pure of heart... and strike down those who aren't.

A blade that can tear through the fabric of space itself, granting ultimate power over passage - or the denial thereof - between any distance.

A light that reveals the paths to treasures immeasurable that have been lost, or perhaps hidden intentionally, from those who would use them for ill purposes.

These ancient relics of miracle-working, the basis of countless myths and legends throughout the ages, have long been the prize of heroes and tyrants alike. Millions have lost their lives in the quest to find them, and even the few who were fortunate enough to lay hands on them were eventually forced to cast them away.

But humans are foolish creatures who refuse to accept that these miracles should forever stay out of their reach. And so, the quests continue...

HEROES PATH

Magesmiths invite trouble. This is an unspoken law of the universe. Perhaps it is because they devote so much of themselves to the things they craft; their luck is probably converted into magical energy at some point in the crafting process. Perhaps it is because the things they forge require such exotic and valuable materials, they must inevitably put themselves in harm's way to acquire them. Perhaps it is both. Or perhaps some deity out there just hates them, who knows?

One such unfortunate practitioner of the ars arcana was climbing up the side of a pyramid in Egypt. Because, let's face it, all the really valuable stuff is in Egypt. The pharaohs were equal parts greedy and resourceful enough to get whatever they wanted, so it's only natural to find the world's greatest treasures there.

If someone had been watching the magesmith, they might have called out to him, saying something like "You know the entrance is at the base of the pyramid, right?" But no-one was watching him, and furthermore, he wasn't looking for the usual entrance. He was searching for the secret door that led to the real treasure...

More than anything though, he was dying from the heat. Figuratively speaking, of course, but that didn't stop him complaining otherwise.

"Gonna diiiie... I'm gonna diiiie... Stupid sun, it's gonna bake me aliiiive..." he half-sung in a weary monotone. The long sleeves of his white dress shirt had been rolled up, but he refused, on some vague principle of his, to wear shorts, and so was slowly cooking himself because of the black pants that he wore. He reluctantly acknowledged that wearing black anywhere near the equator was a sure-fire way to invite heat-stroke, but again, on some vague principle, he thought that he'd rather die of heat-stroke than wear something as ridiculous as white pants... or shorts.

The magesmith's stamina was almost at its limit when a small irregularity in the stone caught his eye. To anyone else, it would look like random scratches made by poor craftsmanship or weather damage, but he recognised a mage's mark when he saw it. With a relieved grin, he brushed a finger against the mark... and fell through the bricks beneath him, which had suddenly disappeared.

Shortly afterwards, the bricks reappeared, sealing him inside.

---

VILLAINS PATH

There was one other man in Egypt at that moment who was ignoring the impracticalities of wearing long-sleeved black clothing under the harsh equatorial sun. He, however, was ignoring it because he simply couldn't feel the heat. This was a man whose concept of personal willpower was the same as physical reality. Whatever he believed was as irrefutable as the pavestones at his feet, as permanent as the sky above him. In his view, something as insignificant as mere temperature had no right to affect him, so it didn't.

Nonetheless, there were some things even he couldn't change. And one of these things was the fact that he was late. He had arranged to meet someone in the shade of the ancient Necropolis ruins in Giza, but as it was, he was struggling to deal with all this bloody sand.

In hindsight, I really should have just taken a car or something, he mused as he approached the crest of the last sand dune, No helping it now; I've reached my destination. Though, I hope my new 'comrade' was smart enough to have brought transportation... I'd rather not have to hike across the desert again today.

The ruins offered very little in the way of protection from the sun, but at least one could take refuge inside the Necropolis tombs themselves. And in the doorway of one of these tombs, someone was waiting for him. He brushed his messy black hair to one side in a half-hearted effort to make himself look a little more presentable and waved to them.

“I apologise for making you wait,” he called out, “The name I gave to you in our previous communications was ‘Realta’, and I believe we are searching for something in common.”

For a cryokinetic, thier power is both a blessing and a curse. On one hand, had this been Alaska or any place of a similar nature, the woman who made her way to the very same pyramid the man before her had fallen into would have been having very little complaints, if any. However, this was Egypt, one of the hottest countries on the planet. And as such, this girl was feeling almost akin to that of a roasted food item.

"Of all the places they could have sent me, why did it have to be Egypt? You could fry an egg on the sidewalk here, if there was a sidewalk here, and yet they didn't think about it? 'Oh, but you're the only one on the team with the skills and capabilties to get through this alive!' Not if I die of heatstroke, I don't! I say we wait until the next ice age or something. Then you can ask me to go to Egypt."

The woman sighed and adjusted the black shades she wore to protect her eye from the unforgiving light of the sun - for the space-bound sphere's unforgiving heat, however, she had less luck. Unlike the man before her, she actually was dressed for keeping cool; her attire consisted of a tan, button-up explorer's vest, a pair of matching shorts, brown hiking boots, and off course the afformentioned sunglasses. Yet, it wasn't enough and thus the girl needed to find herself some shade.

And there would be plenty in the pyramid which the cryokinetic had begun to climb. What she was doing was as of now unknown only to her and the folks who asked for her to be here, but it would not have been too much of a stretch to say she was looking for the same thing the young man had been searching for.

"Well. It's about time he got here."

I apologise for making you wait. The name I gave to you in our previous communications was ‘Realta’, and I believe we are searching for something in common.

The woman he had been scheduled to meet, a young blonde, simply rolled her eyes from behind her sunglasses. "First off, don't wave at me. It makes you look like a parent saying hello to a preschooler when the bus brings them home. Second, what the hell kinda name is 'Realta' anyway? Sounds like the name a woman super hero would have."

She sighed and brushed her hair out of her face. "But you're right, we are here for the same reason. Name's Liz."

HEROES PATH

In the darkness of the pyramid, the magesmith opened his eyes and pushed himself off the sandy floor.

“Owowow...” he muttered, “Who puts a secret door underneath the opening mechanism? I thought the ancient Egyptians were crazy before, and now I’m twice as certain.”

He fumbled about in the pitch-black for a moment, then produced a small torch from his pocket and turned it on, illuminating the hallway he’d found himself in. Instantly, a wave of dread hit him.

First of all, there was a fork at the end of the hall, which split into three ways. Unfortunately for him, he’d never had very good luck when it came to navigating anything more complex than a straight line; even when provided with a map and a marked route, he had an inexplicable tendency to end up kilometres from his destination. Asking him to pick the correct path out of three was like playing Russian Roulette with 5 chambers loaded.

Second of all, everything was covered in cobwebs. And where there were cobwebs, there were...

“Spiders... Why did it have to be spi- No, wait, I’ll get a lawsuit if I use that line.”

Shining his torch erratically at the walls and ceiling, he stepped down the corridor, suppressing a shiver whenever an unavoidable strand of webbing brushed against him. On a wild guess (because he knew that was the best chance he had anyway), he decided to take the right-hand path and continued to move further into the pyramid.

VILLAINS PATH

“Liz?” Realta said, as if testing the sound the name made, “It’s a simple name, rolls off the tongue easily... A bit informal, but who am I to judge?” He gave a soft laugh, then gestured lazily with one hand.

“Well, you’re right in any case; my name is rather unusual. It’s Gaelic, actually. Maybe I’ll tell you what it means one day... not that you seem the type to be interested anyway,” he added, casting Liz a brief glance out the corner of his eye and chuckling to himself again.

“So! I’m sure I don’t need to remind you,” he said, starting to pace back and forth, “but according to several theories, one of the pyramids in this area is the last resting place of a certain lantern that is capable of locating the lost treasures of the world. It’s said to be related to – amongst other things – the crystal skulls in South America, the Lighthouse of Alexandria and the original fire given to mankind by the Greek Titan, Prometheus. The accuracy of such claims is disputable, but it doesn’t make the lantern any less potent.

“Now there’s nothing stopping either of us from pursuing the lantern on our own. True, true. But the knights of King Arthur chased the Holy Grail on their own and look what happened to them; dead, insane or hopelessly lost, every single one of them. My point is, hunting for these sorts of things alone is suicide, and in any case, I’m sure there’ll be more than enough treasures for the both of us to be satisfied.” He stopped pacing in front of Liz and held out a hand.

“So, shall we be partners from here on in?”

"Now I ask, why did they have to put this thing near the top of this pyramid? I'm getting too close to the sun and I don't particually like that."

The young woman's complaints were not unfounded - she felt as if she was literally roasting in the summer heat, like she had been locked in an oven. Yet, when most would just lie down and surrender to nature, this girl pressed on. After all, her current goal was very close.

Before she knew it, she happened upon a small crack in one of the limestone bricks. However, she knew not of the actual mark she had to look for and thus paid it no mind. Therefore, when she casually brushed her hand against the mark, the cryokinetic was not expecting to fall through the wall as part of it suddenly disappeared underneath her.

"Gaelic?" Liz repeated, placing her hands on her hips. "Isn't that an old language they used in Ireland long ago or something?"

Liz shrugged her shoulders nonchalantly. "Eh, I don't see why not."

Thump.

The sound echoed through the hallway, startling the magesmith enough that he almost dropped his torch.

“The hell was that...?” he muttered before cutting himself off. What if there was some kind of ancient guardian in here? This secret chamber was installed by mages, so it would be only natural for something to be in here to guard the treasures within. Resolving to be quieter for the sake of stealth, he placed a hand on the hilt of his sword and continued down the hall.

And promptly ran into a large, upright sarcophagus.

“Gihiiiiii!” he exclaimed, instinctively flailing at it with his torch before realising what it was. After a quick glance around – as if to make sure no-one had seen him – he adjusted his collar and nervously patted the coffin on what passed as its ‘shoulder’.

Upon further inspection, it seemed that he had wandered into a dead end; the sarcophagus stood in the middle of a fairly spacious chamber, the walls lined with more of its kind. These were certainly not the last resting places of Egyptian kings, so what was inside them...? Just that lingering question sent a chill up the young man’s spine, and he quickly retreated back the way he came, fervently hoping that he hadn’t just walked into the sleeping sentinels he had been trying to avoid...

---

VILLAINS PATH

Realta withdrew his hand and, if it was at all possible, grinned a little wider. He hadn’t really expected to seal the agreement with a handshake, and it didn’t seem his ‘partner’ was willing to either. Well, that made things both a little more difficult and a little easier. And that, in turn, made this entire venture a little bit more fun.

“Excellent,” he replied, “Then, by all means, do share your information; which pyramid have you narrowed our prize down to?”

The first thing that greeted the cryokinetic when she landed was a throbbing headache. She spent a few seconds lying on the stone floor, catching her breath. When she felt herself ready to do so, the young brunette finally sat up, placing a gloved hand upon the side of her head.

"Dammit, what kind of arcitects were those ancient Egyptians? Making a trap door like this? And would it have killed them to have put in some carpeting or something so people who came in the way I did would be able to break thier fall?" She sighed and stood up.

"Well, there's nothing more to do, except move forward."

The cryokinetic pulled out a flashlight from the pack on her back and switched it on. She swept it around the room - gold trimmings shone in the illumination. Shortly after, she had cast the light to the fork in the hallway, where three other corridors awaited. "Okay, which way would be the best course of action to take? Left? Middle? Or right?"

Gihiiiiii!

At that scream, the woman dropped the flashlight in alarm. She spent a few seconds trying to grab it, the light flailing about the room. Finally, she managed to grip the base of the flashlight tight so that it wouldn't slip out or anything. "Well, I guess that means right is wrong. Still," she peered into the hallway. "It sounded like someone was in trouble. I'd better check it out, perhaps I could help." With that, she ran into the corridor, her footsteps echoing through the vestibule.

Liz adjusted her sunglasses and lowered them so she could stare at Realta with piercing green eyes. "Before I do, I must tell you that my services aren't cheap. Despite the fact that the corridor was a straight, narrow path, the darkness that surrounded the magesmith unnerved him. Yes, the area ahead was lit up by his flashlight, but it was only a narrow cone compared to the oppressive blackness all around.

Naturally, he was relieved as he came within sight of the junction he’d started at. He was just nearing the mouth of the corridor when he started to wonder why the junction was so well-lit.

I haven’t lit any torches on the walls on my way... he realised just as someone turned the corner and shone a bright light into his face. Completely blinded, he dropped his own source of light and removed the sword from his belt without unsheathing it. Instinct took over, and he began uttering the words he hoped he wouldn’t have to use on this trip.

Schutzritt-!”

He stopped as his eyes adjusted to the light. Wait, that wasn’t right; shouldn’t a deadly guardian of ancient treasures be a bit more heavily-armoured, or at least more monstrous-looking?

“Wha-?”

VILLAINS PATH

“A barter of services is nothing for someone like me,” Realta replied lightly, gesturing delicately with one hand, “If you have a specific ‘something’ in mind for me to do to repay the debt, I’m sure it’s within my ability to accomplish. Otherwise, all I can promise is that as long as you reveal the path to follow, I can make that path safe to travel.”

After all, when it came to safety, the man in black followed a strict policy of ‘the best defence is a good offence’. In other words, if it looks dangerous, murder it. So far, that kind of logic had worked pretty well.

Within seconds, the cryokinetic had caught sight of a large room at the end of the corridor. The girl breathed a sigh of relief - so far she had not seen anything that could be considered dangerous. However, something tugged at the threads of her mind, as if warning her to be careful. And she was going to heed those warnings.

Thus, when someone called out a word she had never heard, in a language she had never heard, the young woman was quick to reach for the hilt of the saber in the scabbard on her left hip.

Schutzritt-!

The cryokinetic pointed the sword at the one who had uttered that word, ready to use it if the need should arise. "Okay then, whoever you are, show yourself!"

There was a brief pause and the girl lowered her flashlight to see if her possible future attacker was still there. He was, but now that she could see him better, the woman was in for a surprise.

Wha-?

"My thought exactly."

A smug grin materalized on Liz's face - this guy was putty in her hands. "How very kind of you. So, I suppose it's a deal then?" Without even waiting for Realta to answer her, the woman gave a brisk nod and continued to speak.

"Very well then, I'll show you the location of the pyramid." Liz turned around and walked over to a sandbuggy she had parked in the shade of a palm tree. She gestured to the vehicle. "It's nothing stylish, but it'll get the job done."

A couple seconds passed as the magesmith processed the information that had suddenly been dumped on him.

The figure in front of him was not an ancient deathtrap, but rather a girl – no, she looked a little older than he was, so technically the proper term would be ‘lady’. Okay, that was a good start. She was pointing a sword at him. Okay, not so much of a good start, but he had drawn his weapon too, so it was only natural.

With that thought in mind, he slowly removed his left hand from the sword hilt and held it up, palm-first in a gesture of peace-making.

“Er, how about we put the sharp things away?” he said, cautiously lowering his sword, “I don’t think pointing swords at one another is an awfully good first impression.”

---

VILLAINS PATH

As Liz turned away, Realta’s amicable smile briefly twisted into a bitter grimace. That expression of hers that suggested that, somewhere in her head, she’d decided she’d won some contest he wasn’t aware of... He’d seen that look before – and yes, admittedly, he himself had caught himself wearing it on occasion – and it never ceased to boil his blood in memory of that first time.

But that only lasted a second; he regained his composure and once again assumed the facade he had been projecting earlier.

“Oh, a car?” he said, “Style or no style, just as long as it means I don’t have to walk. It’s difficult to move around on this unstable terrain; I’m really not used to it, it seems.” He sat down in the passenger seat and cast his gaze towards the pyramids in the distance, already lost in thought for the future that he was now officially about to seize.

The air was still with a pause as the cryokinetic stared at the young man before her. He looked to be just a little younger than she. Not only that, but he didn't look as if he was some sort of guard placed there to protect the tomb from invaders. Nor did he look like an explorer. No, to her, he looked like a guy on vacation who happened to have a string of bad luck that carried him here.

Er, how about we put the sharp things away? I don’t think pointing swords at one another is an awfully good first impression.

The woman hesistated for a moment, for she wasn't sure if she could trust this guy. After all, people with swords are usually not ones you want to mess with. This she knew from experiance, wielding a saber herself. However, when she realized that he wasn't meaning to look threatening, she too placed her weapon on the ground.

"You do have a point. Though I don't see why you'd be here in the first place."

“Why I’m here?” the black-haired youth said, sheathing his weapon pointedly, “Then I shall tell you!” With one hand on his hip and the other on his chest, he proclaimed thusly;

“I am Claru Dante, a travelling magesmith on a world-spanning quest to forge the greatest sword the world has ever beheld! This humble pyramid happens to have the honour of sheltering one of the components required to construct this fabulous piece of metalwork, and I am here to retrieve it, no matter what perils await!”

In his head, a grand fanfare was playing amidst his bombastic speech, which just goes to how detached from reality he was. As if to prove this point further, he clasped his hands behind his back and leaned forward slightly, a satisfied smile on his face.

“Though, most folks just call me ‘Crusader’,” he added in a far more laid-back manner, “Probably ‘cause I’m so dedicated and all that. Ah, oi! That aside,” and he once again launched into his previous fiery tones, “You’re one to talk, asking why I’m here so suddenly! I at least have an excuse, so what’s yours, hmmmm?”

VILLAINS PATH

“Hm? Ah, yes, of course.”

With some difficulty, Realta strapped himself into a seat. It wasn’t easy to manoeuvre a seat belt into place when one was wearing a cape and a dagger sheath, but he did so with as much poise as he could.

“So, shall we get going, partner?” he said once he was ready.

'Dangerous' was the first impression the cryokinetic had gotten of the young magesmith. As for the second notion, she now found him 'strange', encentric, and downright kooky. Yet she had to admire his enthusism - here was someone who was obviously highly ambitious, one who was eager to suceed, as he had said, 'no matter what perils await'.

Of course, she couldn't help but think him a bit pushy for the way he asked what she was doing in this placce;

You’re one to talk, asking why I’m here so suddenly! I at least have an excuse, so what’s yours, hmmmm?

In a twist of irony, the cryokinetic felt something burning up inside of her. She kept herself in check, for a fight was the last thing she needed on her hands. "You ask why I'm here? Well, let me help answer your question with a query of my own," she began, her calm tone of voice belying her true feelings.

The girl casually tipped her hat. "You see this hat perched on my head? What about these clothes covering my body? This is the typical garb of explorers." A smirk touched her lips and she lowered her sunglasses. "As for my name, you may refer to me as 'Blaire'."

Liz rolled her eyes from behind her shades. "Please, we're not a romantic couple or anything. And don't press your luck either," she warned, shooting him a glance from out of the corner of her eye.

That said, the young woman inserted the key in the slot besides the steering wheel. The engine came to life and began to scoot forward.

Crusader tilted his head slightly. Well, yes, the khaki outfit was pretty stock-standard for adventuring sorts, but that didn’t really explain why she was here...

If she’s dodging the question like that, she must be hiding something, he thought, immediately jumping to a paranoid conclusion, Okay, if that’s the case, then...

“Ahhhh, I see,” he said aloud, shutting his eyes and nodding, “Well, I don’t really understand, but at least we’re on the same page, or something like that.” Opening his eyes, he gave another nod, as if deciding something, then added, “Well, as advice to one adventurer to another, there’s nothing of interest down the path I just came down, unless you’re looking for suspicious-looking sarcophagi.” Wandering into the middle of the passageway, he waved a hand at the left and middle forks.

“Well, since you said you’re an ‘explorer’, I don’t know if you’re even ‘looking’ for anything, but whatever I’m searching for is down one of these paths, soooo I’ll leave you to the whole ‘exploring’ business then.”

And with that, he stepped into the archway that lead into the middle path and gave Blaire a small wave.

VILLAINS PATH

Suppressing a snort of derision, Realta rested his elbow on the door and returned his gaze towards the pyramids.

“I assure you, nothing was further from my mind,” he declared.

As they neared their destination, Realta tried to guess which of the pyramids housed the Lantern. The Great Pyramid would be the obvious deduction, on account of it being the biggest and most majestic... but the Pyramid of Menkaure was possibly older than the Great Pyramid, and while certainly the smallest, the ancient Egyptians may have possessed the Lantern when they first began constructing the megaliths, so it could be stored in there. On the other hand, the Pyramid of Khafre, despite being the pyramid of middle-most size between the three, stood on higher ground – thus making it seem the tallest – and was built during the peak of the Egyptian’s power, so...

He cast a sidelong glance at Liz. No, it would be better not to ask; if he came across as too impatient, that would just irritate her, and there was nothing more counter-productive than an ally that wasn’t entirely on-side. Well, that was a hypocritical opinion, all things considered, but still, he preferred to be the one with the advantage when catastrophe struck.

Eventually, the Jeep rolled to a stop in front of Khafre, the weathered limestone tip obscuring a neat chevron out of the sun.

“Centrality...” he muttered, “Middle position, middle size, bordering the two extremes... Hm.”

Blaire watched with some amusement as Crusader cocked his head to the side - an obvious sign of confusion among the human race. "Hmm, what an odd guy," she thought with a slight smirk on her face, one that faded when she took a second glance at him. "Even more so for wearing black pants in a place surrounded by scorching hot desert."

Ahhhh, I see. Well, I don’t really understand, but at least we’re on the same page, or something like that.

Blaire gave a brief nod. "Why yes, I suppose we are."

Well, as advice to one adventurer to another, there’s nothing of interest down the path I just came down, unless you’re looking for suspicious-looking sarcophagi.

"If you didn't figure that out, or at least the possibilty of it being the correct pyramid didn't cross your mind, than you're pretty much hopeless."

The young woman stepped out of the Jeep, returning her shades back in thier natural position in front of her eyes. "But either way," she began, starting to walk around the ancient tomb. "Do you know of the way to get inside this place?"

HEROES PATH

Stopping in mid-step, Crusader turned back and tilted his head again (the amount of times he had done so thus far, one could not be faulted for thinking he came across as easily confused).

“A ‘guiding light’?” he asked, “Er, no, I didn’t see anything like that in there, but then again, I didn’t open any of the coffins in case there was... y’know, guardians in them. Last thing I need is to be chased out of here by a legion of undead before I get my hands on what I came here for.” He paused for a moment, then added, “Though, if it’s a treasure of some sort, it’ll be in the treasure room, right? I mean, that’s where I was headed before you showed up... well, to be more precise, I don’t know exactly where it is, but I’m trying to find it now. I’d, uh, suggest we split up down the two remaining paths, but I’d feel bad making someone wander around in the dark on their own if it can be helped...”

It was a bit of a contradictory statement, considering he had already been wandering around on his own, but it was simply unchivalrous to let a woman navigate a dark and dangerous place like this on her own... even if she did have a sword. Yes, it was a bit of an outdated code of honour to have in the modern day and age, but if he wanted to have an unreasonable ethical code, no-one was going to persuade him otherwise.

VILLAINS PATH

As Liz spoke, Realta silently cursed himself for not considering it earlier; the Egyptians were obsessed with the nature of duality, so creating three giant pyramids to dwarf all others would of course be strange. Yes... straddling the line between great and small, old and ‘new’, and elevated above both so as to have the greatest, most unfettered view of the land... what better place to keep the artefact renowned for it’s ‘all-seeing’ properties?

“But either way, do you know of the way to get inside this place?" his companion asked as she proceeded towards the pyramid ahead of him. He allowed himself the satisfaction of letting a knowing grin spread across his features.

“But of course,” he said, striding in such a manner that he quickly caught up, “To paraphrase what I said before, as long as you have a path to follow, I can make that path unobstructed.” Falling silent, he stared at the archaic stonework, searching for the telltale ‘coldness’ of magic. The mage mark he was looking for would be too small to see from this distance, but it would give off a tiny amount of magic that, to other mages, would be like a faint beacon.

“Huh... That’s odd,” he mused aloud as he spotted the ‘coldness’ halfway up the megalith. It was certainly giving off magic, but that was too much for a mark that had been untouched for so long... Could it have been activated recently?

“I suspect someone is already here, or has already left,” he remarked, climbing onto the first row of stones, “Not that it’s something to worry about should we run into them, but if they’re searching for the same thing we are, we’d better hurry before they get too much of a headstart.”
