Before I ask, I'm not expecting a definite answer, but I figured I'd ask to see what would come of it. (Apologies if this isn't too appropriate a place for this topic, but I couldn't think of anything better)

So about a week ago now, my Dell laptop decided to crash. This would be the third time this has happened, so it wasn't anything new. The previous times, it would crash, than fail to boot back up for about an hour. After that, and much worrying, it would FINALLY boot up back to normal, and I'd have no issue with it for a while there after. Well, this time, after the hour, it didn't boot up. In fact, it instead gave me the dreaded blue screen of death with some sort of 'Boot Faliure' notice. I googled the issue and it seemed possible to fix with the repair discs. Sadly, I was unable to find them, so I brought the machine into Best Buy's Geek Squad.

They said I'd need to find a system disc for them to attempt a repair on it. They also told me they could do a data backup for me, in case repairing the system would wipe my hard drive. I agreed to this, seeing as how my computer had a lot of important data, including my music library, my writings (lyrics and such), and my recorded music. They figured it would be easy to extract because the problem itself wasn't too serious an issue.

Days later I recieve a call from them, and they tell me they were unable to extract the data, but were going to go ahead and replace the harddrive of my computer for free (I have a 2 year plan on it that expires in the end of this month). Though this would mean I lose everything I had, from programs to files. They are giving me my old harddrive back though, which I want to see if I can find a way to get my files extracted off of it.

My question to any of you tech savy folk out there is, do any of you know of any ways or methods to get data off a broken hard drive? I know it's possible, I just don't know how exactly. I've googled this, but the answers are quite scattered. Again though, I'm not expecting an answer, just asking if anyone would have any ideas as to how I could achieve this and recover that which seems to be lost.

Thank you for any and all suggestions!

Some sort of recovery linux booted from CD or flash drive (or floppy if you wanna be a jerk) would work. If the damage is too bad, it would be literally impossible with programs like this. It's always possible that even if you do recover data, some files may have been corrupted. Trinity Rescue Kit helped me. I'm no expert. Have you tried Cy-Fox's thread?

I can't say I'm even aware of Cy's thread actually. Though I may have to go and track that down. Yeah, I'm not sure I could use a program to recover it. While the hard drive is in use, it wouldn't even start the computer up. I assume to get anything off of it, I would probably need some sort of specialized equipment, which I am willing to bet is hard to use and hard to come by. But than again, I'm no expert, I'm just making guesses. Thanks for the information you had to offer me though, any bit of information I can gather is helpful!!

So it boots by flash or CD, but not when the hard drive is in?

The harddrive doesn't boot in full at all. It begins to boot, but in the process it gives me some sort of "Boot Error" screen, dispite what I do, dispite what ever mode I try, be it normal, safe mode, it doesn't matter.
