UPDATE: Microsoft's Major Nelson has posted a clarification on his website regarding the cause of the disc read errors that having been popping up, which should ease the minds of anxious gamers.

On his blog, Nelson fingers an old update as the cause of the errors, not the new update which will increase disc size:

"Clarification time! The console replacement plan that is the subject of some of today’s headlines is related to a previous update, NOT the system update that has been in public beta and will be deployed shortly.

"The new disc format that is part of the beta has been rigorously tested across all Xbox 360 models and there are no known compatibility issues.

"Hope that clears a few things up."

So when the new update rolls out tomorrow, don't worry about hitting that "Accept" button.

ORIGINAL STORY: Microsoft is prepping a Xbox 360 firmware update that starts going out tomorrow which updates the system's disc format, but the company is warning gamers that there may be a few bumps in the road.

"Following a recent update to our system software," says Microsoft, "we have become aware of an issue that is preventing a very small number of Xbox 360 owners from playing retail game discs. This issue manifests itself as a unique 'disc unreadable' or 'disc unsupported' error on the screen. We are also able to detect this issue over Xbox Live and are proactively reaching out to customers that may be impacted to replace their console."

Microsoft is reportedly offering to give afflicted gamers a 250GB slim 360 along with a year's membership to Live.

The disc format update plans to increase the storage space on DVDs used by the system by 1GB.

Update for XBL on Gameinformer

So apparently there is a new update out for Xbox live. I personally won't be able to update for a while (Need internet to my Xbox for that) but its still got me a little bit skeptical what with there being reports of disc reading errors. But according to the article it should be fixed for the most part and only a small percentage of systems have been afflicted. Thoughts anyone?

What is the difference between a duck?

They're updating the discs that the game software is burned onto.. from standard DVDs to Xbox Discs which are basically DVDs with an extra layer, they are about 1.5 times bigger, they just have to get the update completely right to perfectly differentiate the two formats, DVD movies should remain unaffected.

All this means is that more content will now fit onto Xbox game media, it's nothing but a positive, especially considering what they're offering IF you happen to have a problem.

One problem I have with that last part is that there are going to be people who say their system was broken just so they can get a 250GB slim and a years worth of Live. But I guess MS would be able to tell wouldn't they. So that makes it little more reassuring. If anyone has gotten the update already, what seems to have changed? I've heard so far that nothing really is different yet, other than the ability to use Paypal to add points and update your subscription.

This update isn't one of those "sexy" visual Dashboard updates.. it's mostly for certain Avatar functions, Disc format upgrades, and Paypal support..

so in essence.. it's like every PS3 update ever, bringing stability with no visual change, but in this case noticeable things will actually happen. xD

Ah and I was hoping for a new "sexy" visual update too. :P

But in all seriousness I kinda am hoping that maybe it also will do some behind the scenes speed up work... I really can't stand staring at loading screens and maybe it will fix the issues my Xbox has with connecting to wireless remotes...

Hmmm.. So MS finally got support for dual layer discs? I remember PS2 had support for DL DVDs. Of course, this could also increase disc read speed, and I'm doing fine with mine, so yay.
