Apparently the CC data is encrypted so even if it were stolen, it's unlikely that they could decrypt it. The other information was behind a sophisticated security system so it isn't like they did not have good security. Anything can get hacked, it just depends on how dedicated the hackers are to getting in. Good to know they are working with law enforcement, hopefully those who are responsible get jail time.

I still can't use this.

But funnily enough, a number of people on NeoGAF are already reporting that they've been experiencing cases of credit card fraud recently, and that said cards were actually linked to their PSN accounts. Even the FAQ you linked to says not to rule out the possibility anyways. If I were involved in this mess, I wouldn't sit around relying solely on company measures to protect my cc of all things, because it's those same company measures that failed in protecting me in the first place.

A chat log from February this year has also been popping up, but its reliability is questionable, to say the least.

So yesterday this whole thing made the news down here. They mentioned that your CC details could be at risk and advised that you take appropriate measures. And also how pissed people were at Sony for taking 6 days to tell them something like this was going on.

Lucky for me I've never used a Credit Card to purchase funds (not that I even own a credit card anyway) so I don't have to worry about that. I've only purchased a voucher or two for some DLC. The whole personal information thing is a bit of a worry though. :/

Here's hoping those 15 or so dollars are still in my wallet when it's back up and running.

Looks like VG Cats has their own personal take on the matter. It's a little funny but it's still a bad situation for all parties.

People are idiots. Sony took 6 days to reveal full details, because that's how long it took to figure out the extent of what happened. You can blame Sony for being slow but the reality is that it was the outside agency they hired that took that long to figure everything out and they consist of some of the most experienced and skilled people in the field...

People think things like this are just so simple when they are not. Sony isn't going to prematurely say something which could send everyone in a panic if they don't know if it's true or not.

As for people having their CCs transacted on NeoGAF.... I just don't know, that place is known for the most rabid fanboys the internet has seen. Not saying it isn't happening, but I'd wait to hear it from somewhere else as I wouldn't trust any users over there.

This just in, a lawsuit's been issued against Sony by a PSN user. If this goes class-action, I say don't hesitate, litigate!

Source would be nice Cy. I'd definitely do it. My money could be in jeopardy so that's not sitting well with me anyways.

Sony faces lawsuit over PlayStation hack

By Maija Palmer in London

Published: April 28 2011 16:19 | Last updated: April 28 2011 16:19

The first lawsuit has been filed against Sony in the US after hackers stole the personal details of more than 70m people on the company’s PlayStation Network.

Kristopher Johns, a 36-year-old Alabama resident, filed a class-action lawsuit against the Japanese company in the US District Court for the Northern District of California.

The lawsuit claims that Sony violated laws prohibiting companies from storing credit card data.

It also said that Sony “failed to encrypt data and establish adequate firewalls to handle a server intrusion contingency, failed to provide prompt and adequate warnings of security breaches, and unreasonably delayed in bringing the PSN service back on line”.

Sony was on Thursday reported to be telling gamers that it had encrypted the credit card data that was stolen, reducing the chances of it being misused. The company had initially said that none of the data had been encrypted.

Sony is facing widespread criticism over the way it has handled the hacking crisis, particularly the week-long delay before it informed gamers of the breach.

Many gamers have complained that they have still not received any notification from Sony about the problem.

I'd love it if the payout was about a quarter of a million or so at least if it becomes class action.

Oh, ffs, stop being such a Sony apologist. The community's hardassed nature has absolutely nothing to do with the reports. Seriously, what kind of e-peen would some of the most ardent supporters of PSN-- the ones that actually use their credit cards on it-- have to gain by reporting that they're experiencing fraud from the network's hacking in a situation where Sony themselves admit it's actually possible cc info was stolen? Seriously; explain to me how fanboyism has a clout in these claims' legitimacy. The Xbots aren't saying it.

When such personal information is even suspected to be compromised, Sony had a duty to report to their customers immediately. They sat on it and now people are rightfully angry and scrambling to change their details. Inept network security, shoddy sales practices and management.

GG Sony. And remember kiddies, you don't need a Network to play on your SEGA Genesis or Dreamcast.

I was so happy making run throughs on Pokemon Puzzle League yesterday. I turned the N64 on, the game came on immediately with no disparaging lights or annoying menus to navigate or mandatory updates to make, and I tell ya I played that game, goddammit, and I played that game without worrying if Nintendo had lost my financial information to some a-hole hackers.

Old consoles are the best consoles, man.
