Oregon legislators salute Rick Astley

'Never gonna give you up', promises House of Representatives

By Lester Haines

Posted in Bootnotes, 14th April 2011 09:28 GMT

Oregon legislators have proved they're down with the kids by slipping the lyrics to Rick Astley's immortal Never Gonna Give You Up into otherwise deadly serious House of Representatives business.

The rickrolling-inspired vid was posted on 1 April, and went viral earlier this week. It was the brainchild of Portland Democrat Jefferson Smith, who conspired with fellow House members to insert Astley into a month-long legislative session.

He told Reuters: "It seemed non-time-consuming, funny and positive. Our country is facing some real partisan toxin. Any break from that seems not terrible."

Fellow Democrat Lew Frederick explained to AP: "You just never knew when someone was going to bring it up. When they did, there was always sort of a mild chuckle among the folks who knew what was going on."

Republican Vicki Berger provided the vital "ooh". She said: "We do really work hard. But that doesn't mean you can't have a little fun and say 'ooh' on the floor."

Vic Gilliam, another Republican conspirator, concluded: "It was silly, but it was a great thing to sit back and laugh at ourselves and let other people laugh as well.

Haha, I've hadn't seen this before, it's very funny! I'm glad they were able to take a break from the serious and often contentious politics to have some fun. :)

They did it on purpose, Aleks..

It's good to see something happening in Oregon because usually it's just an infinite void of complete nothingness outside of Salem, Portland, and Cannon Beach. Even those 3 places can be pretty meh.

I think every city can be slightly boring. Portland hardly sleeps so its always a blast. As for the smaller cities they can get a bit bland.

Portland is alright but it's an orgy of lifted highways across the interstate and I really don't have a lot to do there compared to Seattle, where I've got the AFK Tavern and Gameworks among other things and a bunch of concert venues...

I do like how the Horse Racing track is conveniently near the metro area.. too bad it's horribly run down, used to be a nice place to chill in the 90's.

Yeah I know what you mean nowadays its all "hipster" territory in Portland. Can't even enjoy a day downtown. As for Seattle I've only been in the airport as a flight stop so I really don't have to much knowledge about it.

EDIT:Spelling.

I do like how this topic has derailed into talking about US geography which non-US people don't care about.
